Of course if it was any Funkadelic song, it'd have to be "Maggot Brain".

As for Fela Kuti, thanks for the tip. I've heard some of his stuff, like "Zombie". It sounds ok. The only jazz I really like is Sun Ra.

sun ra, cool. zombie is good but fela's got more/better funk from my experience. he came to the states and incorporated james brown and reggae styles into what is now known as (nigerian) afrobeat. yea some songs are like an album long but your bootsy collins lovin' self would defo appreciate the a$$ shaking bottom end of a lot of fela's stuff. total stoned groove

All Niney productions?

Correct, but better than that - the I-Roy one is a version of "Wolf and Leopard" with his own rude lyrics laid on top, the Niney one was just him mucking about with the original riddim on his own, probably while he was waiting for someone else to come into the studio to cut another version of the same tune.

You gotta love the Jamaican approach to copyright. ;)

What's it like? I'm a big Tindersticks fan, and that's on my wishlist.

The Good Son
19/10/2006, 10:22 AM
I have the more recent one 'Leaving Songs', and think it's definitely up there with Tindersticks more recent stuff, while not reaching the level of the first two albums. Then again there's very few recordings that would hit the heights of them first two Tindersticks albums. But all in all a very good album and well worth getting your hands on.

19/10/2006, 10:43 AM
Big Tindersticks fan too, though they lost it a tiny a bit after Simple Pleasures, my favourite of theirs by a long way, what was that, their 4th one?
Must have a look out for the Stuart Staples stuff so.

'Leaving Songs', that's the one. Didn't realise there was an earlier one. I'm so out of touch.

Stann, I really like Simple Pleasures, and yes, by my count it's the fourth. The debut album is still by far my favourite. The second and curtains I used to listen to a lot, but not as much now. I like 'Can our love', but the last couple aren't as strong as S.P.

Did. They are sadly no more, early to mid 90s only, probably the best lost band ever, but that's another thread. :)
And no, it's about 6 or 7 minutes long only, on their Sackful of Silver album. In The Spanish Cave is easily their best if you ever come across it.
I'm not too well up on my Can, must admit, but always meant to check them out as they always sounded like a band I'd love. Will do that now then!

i will have look round for these boys, they have good taste in a cover tune, that's for sure. the original yoo doo right is pretty raw, it's from an early album with american malcom mooney yelling hoarsely over the majority of the groove. you can lose yourself in it but at other times the wheels grind a bit. 7 mins is probably very appropriate edit length. if yer looking for Can, best place might be their 2 disk anthology 1968-1993.. if you do downloads, then check out the aforementioned song 'halleluwah' with damo suzuki fronting them - tribal, trance-inducing, multi-dubbed drum psychrock of the first order. some Can is noisy, avant-garde, 'experimental,' whatever the hell that is, but they were wayyyyyyy ahead of a lot of rock music in what they were doing. compatriots faust and amon duul II highly recommended as well.

I had Babes in Toyland on tape too, but I picked it up for a couple of quid last week. Bruise Violet opens it, and is still as raw as when I heard it first.

ah! great! been bangin on about them on this board for about 18 months, nice to see them checked. used to be called manitoba until some douchebag aging rocker sued them even though he used the word as "part" of his name. their 2nd album is amazing, 'up in flames'
