I thought I'd open a thread to keep track of our seeding throughout the campaign. For those that don't know, the seeding is calculated by a country's average points per game over the last 2 campaigns. We were seeded 25th of 52 country for the current Euro qualifiers. We started the current seedings in 22nd place (ie. We had the 22nd best points/game ratio from the last campaign only).

This is the ranking of teams based on their seedings for the next world cup qualifiers before a Euro qualifier was played:

A B
1 Netherlands 10 Romania
2 England 11 Ukraine
3 Portugal 12 France
4 Sweden 13 Spain
5 Croatia 14 Turkey
6 Poland 15 Russia
7 Italy 16 Slovakia
8 Czech Republic 17 Denmark
9 Serbia 18 Switzerland

C D
19 Norway 28 Finland
20 Israel 29 Scotland
21 Greece 30 Latvia
22 Ireland 31 Belgium
23 Bosnia 32 Slovenia
24 Bulgaria 33 Albania
25 Austria 34 Lithuania
26 Estonia 35 Belarus
27 Hungary 36 Northern Ireland

E F

39 Macedonia 48 Faroe Islands
40 Liechtenstein 49 Kazakhstan
41 Armenia 50 Luxembourg
42 Moldova 51 San Marino
43 Andorra

Bump.

Any update on this, eirebhoy? Hungary losing to Malta will have helped us, but it looks like we're on the brink of entering Pot E at the moment, although two wins against San Marino would be a boost.

Looking at this

Assume you need 1.4 to get into pot D, 1.8 to get into Pot C and 2 to get into Pot B.

I make this that we need 14 points to stay where we are, 23 to go into C and 27 to get into B.

We have 1 point, assume 6 vs San marino

From the remaining 7 matches we need another 7 to stay where we are, should do this (Wales, Cyprus home wins, draw vs Wales away or Slovaks at home)

16 to go up a level. Hard to see us doing this would need wins v Wales home and away, Cyprus home, Slovaks home, draws v germany at home and Czechs away and probably need to beat Slovaks away.

20 to go into Pot B. This means winnign all remaining games (would be 21 points)

Pot C is someting to aim for.

By the way this is based on 7 groups for the next campaign. I assume Europe will have 13 places, isnt 6 a possibility?

pineapple stu
12/10/2006, 4:01 PM
There won't be six groups unless they plan on having 9 teams in some groups. There'll be seven at least, possibly eight.

You can't really tell anything from this as yet, as it's thrown out of synch by the fact that some teams have played poor teams and some have played better teams. We should be up to 1.6 by February after beating San Marino twice, with very few other games on. But it's still good to keep track.

For what it's worth, this is on Bert Kassies' site (http://www.kassiesa.com/uefaforum/view.php?topic=20060907053110.xml) too.

If we can finish this campaign well and get ourselves into the third pot of teams then that wouldn't be too bad.

San Marino 0 Ireland 2
Ireland 3 San Marino 0
Irealnd 2 Wales 1
Wales 0 Ireland 0
Slovakia 0 Ireland 0
Ireland 1 Slovakia 0
Czech Republic 2 Ireland 1
Ireland 2 Cyprus 0
Ireland 0 Germany 1.

Would leave us with 18 points.

eirebhoy
15/10/2006, 12:34 PM
18 points from this group would leave us with a 1.59 average so we'd probably need more than that to get into Pot C.

Bungle
15/10/2006, 1:04 PM
For us to do it then we'll have to do something special like win in Slovakia or maybe draw/win with the Germans and the Czechs. We'll also need to hope that there will be more results like Hungary and Malta, and teams like Russia/Ukraine/Bulgaria losing a good few points.

It seems that the next seedings group for the World Cup could be majorly messed up with countries like Spain in there potentially...on paper it could be harder than the second pot.

Cyprus will destroy San Marino in their home stadium. :) Cyprus are about as strong as an Eircom league XI. An EL XI could give any team a decent game at home as Cyprus usually do. San Marino's best player plays in Serie C1 and they're the worst team in Europe. The rest of their players play in San Marino I think which I guess is probably equivalent to a decent Sunday league over here. A draw against them in San Marino would be a lot more embarassing than the 5-2 defeat to Cyprus. :)

Just to put their league into perspective.

The Champions of San Marino lost 7-1 on aggregate to APOEL of Cyprus this season in the 1st round of the UEFA cup. APOEL finished 3rd in the Cypriot league.
The previous Champions lost 8-0 on agg to NK Domzale of Slovenia.
The year before that they lost 9-1 to FK Zeljeznicar of Bosnia.
And before that they lost 9-0 to a Russian team.

I can't think of another international team that I would be as confident we would beat. Obviously anything could happen but I would have thought if we played the 100 times we would win 99. This isnt being disrespectful, it's being realistic.

San Marino V Leitrim would be a fairer match than SM V ROI.... see below:

San Marino:
Population (2006 est.): 29,251
Largest city: Serravalle: 8,700
Currency: Euro
Source: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0107939.html

Leitrim:

Now I think than the National Team should be able to beat a Leitrim Select XI.... shouldn't we????

For the first time in our history we are now ranked below the north, see bbc:

N Ireland ranked above Republic

Lawrie Sanchez has guided Northern Ireland into the top 50
Northern Ireland have overtaken the Republic of Ireland in the Fifa rankings for the first time.
After beating Latvia in their most recent Euro 2008 qualifier, Northern Ireland have risen 13 places to 45 while the Republic slip to 49.

It is Northern Ireland's highest ranking since 1995 and the Republic's lowest for eight years.

Steve Staunton's Republic suffered a 5-2 defeat in Cyprus before holding the Czech Republic to a draw at home.

Under Sanchez, Northern Ireland have risen from 124th place in the rankings.

However, their progress did not stop the former Wimbledon midfielder considering his position in September after receiving criticism he felt his team did not deserve.

Sanchez recently stated that he would like to get Northern Ireland higher than the Republic during his time in charge.

I said we should beat them, and we should. I didn't say we will beat them.

Stastically, a Lansdowne Road crowd XI should be as good as San Marino. I wouldn't see it as presumptuous that the best 11 players from the crowd would lose to the 11 players they're watching represent their country!! :p

taking 6 points off wales is do able.

Having seen Wales in recent years, I would have to agree. That said, their problem is inconsistency, often stemming from not having all their top players available, plus Toshack's policy of giving youth its head.
But considering how poor the ROI have been recently, the Welsh may be equally justified in thinking they could take 6 points.
Frankly, any of 0, 1, 2, 4 or 6 points could be the ROI's haul from the two Welsh games, with my money being on two points (and one or four dead-heating for the "podium places").

Does anybody have the link to that upto date seedings page? It would be good to see know where we stand.

If this group is about damage control and we're looking at getting into the third seeds batch for the World Cup, then there appears to have been some good results last night i.e Belgium being hammered, Norway losing at home to Bosnia (although they must be a rival of ours, as they are fourth seeds also), Estonia losing to Russia and Denmark losing in Spain.

To be comfortable of nicking into the third seeds batch, we'll have to take 12 points of the Welsh and Slovaks, though I think 9 points should be enough.

I'd usually leave it until after Wednesday's matches but I'm bored.

If we finished the campaign in Group D, I'm not going to have too much confidence for the world cup campaign. Look at some of the teams ahead of us :(
Its goin to make things really difficult

How about this possible group

Germany,Italy,Spain,IRELAND,N.Ireland,Cyprus,San Marino.

Shows how far we have dropped.

yeah, the fact i looked at the 2 last seeds and realised that there wasn't even guaranteed 6 points off each anymore :o

If we win on Wednesday and Norway lose in Turkey we would move into the 3rd pot at least for the moment. I think we'd be lucky to maintain a 4th seeding spot after this campaign.

the thing is if we take 10 points off all our games against Slovakia and Wales (I know optimism is reigning supreme here and beat cyprus then we may nick into third seeds fairly comfortably. This would put us ahead of Slovakia, while teams like Ukraine, Denmark, Israel, Norway and Russia are in very difficult groups and will drop alot of points. Hopefully the Scots will get pummelled in their remaining games because they're going to be a real rival for third seeds.

Christ, i remember the good old days, when we used to talk about going to World Cups... now we are looking at 3rd place qualifying seedings as our cup winning trophy moment!

True but if we can make it into the third batch of seeds and get a favourable group then maybe we can think about qualification.........in fact start saving now because we always qualify for the most expensive places....Fifa's decision to rotate world cups is really Blatter's gift to Irish football!!!

With the talent of the young lads and a decent manager and a good draw i.e Poland and Sweden as first two seeds then I'd be very hopeful. here's hoping!!
