germany 0-1 ireland

doherty from a corner near the end of the game (hopefully)As in straight from the corner just like Stan against the Nordies in Lansdowne yonks ago. Sure what would The Doc be doin takin a corner?:p

It's very likely that none of us will feel the pain of the beating due to the fact that we'll have a whole days drinking in prior to kick off. Many of us won't even make the stadium. You know who you are......

I think we'll be okay.

I'm happier going into this on the back of a hiding than maybe I should be.
I'd just rather we lost every friendly we played and qualified for a few more tournaments than we seem to.

Score draw.

If you heads really believe Ireland have a good chance of winning stick your hard earned cash on them at Ladbrokes at 6/1. I unfortunately think they're 6/1 for a good reason and won't be parting with my dosh.

I honestly don't know what the score will be. I feel it could go a number of ways depending on a number of things. Stan hasn't exactly had me feeling very confident in him lately but this team of ours has a habit of surprising us when we least expect it and if we have a full team then we have nothing to be scared of at all.

2-0 to Germany or 1-1.

In 2 minds. Anyone who knows me here knows I'm an eternal optimist but I have grave doubts about Saturday. Maybe 5 years without a proper win & with only a few creditable performances in competitive games has finally taken its toll on my mindset.

But no, I'll give it one last go: we're a good team against good teams. We have our best players back. Germany's defence is weak. Robbie is better than Podolski. Germany's wave of euphoria is over. We always win in Stuttgart. We're at our best when expectations are low (Amsterdam 2000) and we're due a bit of luck.

0-1. McGeady, the Glaswegian, with a header after 6 minutes, and Given, the Donegal keeper making 7 unbelievable saves. Our fingernails will be bitten to the core but we'll hang on.

Not sure my heart could take 84 mins plus probably 8 or 9 extra.

2-1 Ireland, why not the germans have a new man in charge and
the crowd got their sh*te defence through the world cup on
pure adrenaline as always happens the hosts, their best defender is lahm a 21 yr old rookie, our best defender probably finnan and he's one the european cup..............
our attacking players are a real threat, the german attack is very one-dimensional will suit the honey monster, and ballacks not fit!
All that added to a world cup hangover, Whats everyone so worried about!;)

There's been a load of doom & gloom, some from myself, but what can we take with us from the Dutch game and what can we put behind us that'll help?

McGeady's form when played in his best position
Doyle's performance
Central midfield in second half was miles better
Liam Miller's confidence must be high knowing that Roy Keane wants him
We were missing key players - 4 out of our 5 most important. All are back now
We were messing with shape
The club season hadn't even started
Robbie's club form
The German defence may be weak
We'll have a huge support
Alan O'Brien's pace

Others?

OK, so it's only one side of the equation, but let's look at the glass as half full.

All we need to know is that we are Ireland and anything is possible !

Once that whistle blows and 25,000+ men in green start to roar then its game on.

we havent that bad a record against them

That's true and one of more reasons why we have got a lot of respect for your team...

Dont forget the noise from 15,000 irish fans full of german beer is a bit louder than the suits in Landsdowne.

Beside the German defence problems that is your big advantage, which can't be denied. I remember your WC qualifying game in Paris (a few of my Celtic friends - Germans & Irish - travelled to "Stade de France"), when about 40,000 Eire fans created a real home atmosphere! Do you remember the "Che sarà" chants...? ;) And don't forget that Stuttgart has always been a good pavement for Ireland/Celtic...

I expect a very tough game for my Germans and predict a 1:1 draw (Klose/Keane). Let's hope it will be sufficient for both teams to reach the EURO 2008 at the end. Unfortunately I have to miss the match as I didn't get a ticket (having been too much occupied with the World Cup).

I wish a great party to those of you who are going to Stuttgart and hope to see a good, exciting & fair game!

Slainte.

UWE

PS: Would like to see Aiden McGeady being in the starting line.

I'm feeling optimistic....

Cracker of a game, end to end with some comedy defending, finishes all-square 1-1. RobbieK on target for us. Good result to start the campaign.

I had an unusually vivid dream last night that Klose put Germany 1-0 up inside 10 minutes. For some reason (this particular detail of Stan's sheer unpredictability may have been influenced by the recent selection of Sean St Ledger), Stan had dropped Duff and Keane. He brought them both on at half-time, Keane got sent off with 15 minutes remaining and 1 minute into injury time, Duff equalised. 1-1. And, for some reason, Colin Healy was playing.

So, what to take from that? I should stop drinking, firstly. Secondly, to borrow the words of a philosopher whose name I have forgotten, if you can conceive of something, then it is possible. Despite my usual inclinations to doom and gloom predictions, I'm going to stick with us grinding out a very lucky and very undeserved 1-1.

This game depends on one thing...

Is Staunton brave enough to play McGeady?

If he is Ireland have a chance. It shows we're going to give it a go and going to try and beat them. We have a 50/50 chance to get at least a point this being the case.

If he don't play Mcgeady we're going there scared of them and will get humped.

Germany to score in the first minute and then win 3:0

A quote from the DFB website:

... basically Low says he's been doing a lot of work to get his defenders used to each other, which didn't go so well at the beginning. He's also made them study videos, and then warns we'll be uncomfortable long-ball opponents... why does the rest of the world still think that??

But hopefully they listen to him and are baffled when we don't just hoof the ball up to them.

By the way elsewhere on the page they talk about expecting Ballack to play more defensive midfield, also good for us, keep him as far away from Given's goal as possible. :)

Fekken Dem....if they are going to be unkomfartable mit einen longen ballen zen ve should send dem lots of long ballen.

Given (not Shay) that nobody here is in anyway sure of what our midfiled will be and has little confidence regardless...play a 4-4-2 but boot it past the midfield...at least at some point in the game...not a good idea to start with that "paln" early on though as 50-50 balls won by the Germans too often could lead to confidence in possession.

I expect a spirited performance and we better give one, constant harassment of the Geramns anytime they have the ball, Kevin Doyle etc. have youth and speed and should be able to go at pace for 95 minutes

0-0 written all over it.....but 0-1 with an 85th minute goal bundled in by Doyler.

With the injured lads back I honestly don't see where the 3 and 4 nil defeats been predicted are coming from. We got spanked by Holland because we had the bare bones of a team on the park. GIven, Dunne, Duff and Keane will make a huge difference in confidence and performance.

We may still lose but I can't see it being by more than the odd goal.

My head says 1:1 and my heart 2:1 to Ireland.

Just been listening to a preview of the game on BBC Five live. Tha panel was Matt Holland, Joe Royle and a Daily Telegraph journo, Paddy something. All 3 of them were seriously optimistic! Were very scathing about Germany and talking up Ireland big time - particularly the importance of Shay Given and Richard Dunne. 1-1 I'd say

I watched Germany against Sweden. Their result against them sounds impressive but Sweden were in a similar position to us when we played the Dutch - they were missing all their key players. In addition, they didn't have their first choice centre halves available for that game and it showed - they were all over the place and at fault for the goals. Sweden also tried out a new formation in that match and I think it's fair to say they won't be using that formation again.

Realistically Germany should have the better of us - but I don't think it's going to be clear cut. We have a number of decent players of our own who would get into that German side. Personally I think Given, Finnan, Dunne, Duff and Keane would be first choice players with them if they were German. And looking at their centre halves for tonight's match, I think Keane and Doyle are going to cause them plenty of problems (if we can get the ball to them). I don't rate Germany right-full too highly and if Duff can play the way we know he can, that's an area we can exploit over and over again. The more I think of our chances, the more optimistic I become. The odds are too good not to fancy placing a bet on an Irish win.
