previously on foot.ie .........
'The viking', expelled from the exclusive confines of EL High at the beginning of the summer semester, has taken to standing at the school gates at recess shouting abuse at the other kids as they come out. "Super Gretna', a strange, nearly incomprehensible exchange student from somewhere in 'North Britain' has been in league with him, and both have been seen consorting with Professor Collins, the disgraced former music teacher, who was once an illustrious member of the faculty before his injudicious remarks on prom night. Gretna mysteriously disappears after a savage beating, apparently at the hands of "Derry' the misunderstood kid from the wrong side of the tracks, who was given a scholarship in EL High after he was bullied out of his previous school, a hidebound presbyterian college somewhere in the north ................ congrats to Derry, a marvellous result and I wish you every success in the next round:ball:
brilliant display and result by derry, just came across the game by pure fluke when channel surfing (setanta) - last 4 goals were just class - as were the mass fans behind the goal, christ how good must that have felt - every other 21, opps, 20 clubs in our league would have loved a slice of that in our dreams.
surprised not much made in papers today re previous record wins in europe, think i saw it was biggest ever win away in europe by an irish side (hardly surprising) - rovers were next best beating a Lux side 4-1 away in the 60`s - other big wins were us beating Fram of Iceland at home 4-0 in early 80`s
Can anyone post any other big wins ? I cant recall any more than 2 or 3 nils

Article from Gretna Website -
Despite being 5-1 down after the home-leg, Gretna still have a chance to progress to the first-round proper of the UEFA Cup when they travel to Derry City on Thursday (Aug 24) - with this club, anything is possible.
While the idea of winning by five goals away from home after losing by such a large margin at home, it should be remembered that Gretna were playing at Fir Park - not Raydale Park - and the players had only played one competitive match (and it's arguable whether winning 6-0 at home to Hamilton really counts as a competitive match).
So how can Gretna achieve what would be one of the greatest European comebacks of all-time? By not treating it as a European match, but a standard league fixture.
The difference with league games, of course, is that - unless a club needs a good goal-difference at the end of the season - a 1-0 win earns the same points as a 6-0 win. Gretna's players know all about winning by large margins, they have done so many times over past few seasons, and nobody would be too surprised if the Black and Whites were to score twice inside the first 10 minutes of a league fixture and then on to score a hat-full.
Sure, there is a viewpoint that Gretna's players underestimated Derry City before the second-leg - although that has been denied by a fuming Steve Tosh - but there is no chance of doing that again. Whoever starts on Thursday should believe they can win the tie - not just the match.
It is essential the match is broken down into small parts, with an aim for each part. For example, scoring two within 10 minutes has to be the initial task.
The speed of Derry's attack compared to Gretna's defence, who were made to look flat-footed in the first leg, also suggests that attack really should be Gretna's best form of defence.
With lots of luck (perhaps like the luck Kevin Deery had to score two blinders in the same game, let alone the same decade), and belief, Gretna can do this - and I'm sure most fans would rather see them lose with all guns blazing than settle for a clean-sheet.
Sure, it's not likely (and nowhere near as likely as the 20/1 one bookie is offering), but stranger things have happened in football, just ask Liverpool...
Our recent poll asked 'How should Gretna treat the UEFA second-leg?' and, currently, an overwhelming majority have said Gretna should try and win by five goals.
Try to win by five goals 61%
Any win will do 23%
Aim for a clean sheet 5%
Field an experimental team 11%

For the good of the league's reputation and co-efficient it's vitally important we win the return leg. To be honest, I'd take 1-0 to us right now. Then again, I'm a complete pessimist when it comes to football. After every one of our goals in Gretna, if I'd been offered the score, I'd have been back on the bus like a shot. :p

What the fcuk ???
There isn't a Derry fan alive who would take that, and the team certainly wouldn't either.
We're all out to win this - for our team, our fans, our unbeaten home recdord, the league, the coefficient, to shut those mouthy Gretna fcukers up - for more reaons than you can shake a big bendy stick at.
Humping p!ss-ant pub teams week in week out has obviously given Gretna a Captain Invincible psychology. They think they can beat anyone by hatfuls of goals - ans when they don't it's all down to luck and an unfamiliar pitch ! The ungratious muppets. I hope Stephen Kenny prints a copy of that out for every player to act as motivation to go out and hammer those mercenary has-been jokers again....

I think where is he coming form is that you would have happily taken a 5-4 aggregate victory at the start of the tie although I do understand your sentiments now.

You said it. I would not be happy with a 3-0 defeat. For once the British media sat up and took notice as their 'wee fairytale team,' were hammered by the 'underdogs.' It would undo a lot of that good if Gretna managed a win- we all know the spin their fans and manager are capable of. Plus, as an avid coefficient watcher  I desperately want the points and the pride of having a team that has contributed four straight wins to Ireland's ranking. Believe me, those scores (with the others gathered by other teams so far) will be invaluable for years to come.

1-0 would be a good result for Derry. They don't need to hammer the Gretners and keeping a clean sheet would be a good defensive workout.

Certainly hope Derry don't let up, and I don't expect them to. Another thumping win would be great. The article from the Gretna website was classic stuff. They were thumped in the first leg because they played on an unfamiliar pitch, whereas, in the 2nd leg........ :o doh, think I just spotted the fatal flaw in their plan.

Derry are without Peter Hutton, which is a big loss as he has a calming effect on the rest of the defence.
In saying that, Ken Oman is an able replacement but I'll gladly settle for a 0-0.
As long as we don't get beaten, because a defeat would give all the knockers their chance to say "told you 5-1 was a fluke."

The poll asked what he team should try for on Thursday. Should they (a) try for qualification or (b, c and d) give up on the tie and just try to boost morale or give some fringe players European experience.
