Not surprised he played well but would have love to have seen him link up with Flynny in the two games....ah well.
Back to the league. Roll on Waterford

Roddy giving out about Cork having too small a squad and not investing enough since their league win during half time analysis. He reckons Cork are going backwards and is giving out about Rico a bit.
He's right that the squad is too small, but would he mind telling us how Cork are supposed to strengthen it when Revenue are knocking on the door?
"Expand the squad" is an analyst's (and a fan's) solution to everything, regardless of any sort of grounding in reality.
Zvezda looked dodgy when Cork got a chance to go at them. Can see them scoring against AC, but conceding one or two more.

Thought the goal keeper for Red star was a bit dodgy and defence slipped up once or twice. Milan should beat them comfortable though.

hard luck lads !!
We were outclassed, we should have got at least 1 though.
Roy had a super chance, Addy hit the bar, Colin had a shot, Behan had a free header from 6 yards.
Thought Benno was dragged in the box at the end, probably would have been given at the other end.
Disappointed we didn't have a decent striker on the pitch.

your man O'Callaghan was terrible.
How isn't Bennett playing at a higher level.
Corkies finishing was terrible, Behan and O'Donovan had great chances 10/15 yards out.
It's amazing how O'Brien is your record appearances at Euro level because he was completely switched off in the 1st min. and cost a goal.
Ref was pretty bad also.

Hard luck Cork - little chance of progression after the 1st leg. Playing Behan up front (more or less) alone in TC proved costly.
Had all of 3 euro on 3-0 at 11/2. Rich beyond my wildest dreams.

Sam Alardyce said he would buy him but he is too old supposedly?

How isn't Bennett playing at a higher level.
None of the World Club Cup teams are interested in him.
City just not good enough.
I reckon if George, Gamble, Danny and Flynn were playing we could have got a result at the Cross.
But they weren't.
Responsibility must be accepted.
You can't expect a centre-half to make his debut in the Champions League against Red Star Belgrade and adjust.

Brian Lennox has come out saying there is money there to bring in new players! With Georgie on his bike they could at least bring in one very decent player, a striker would be nice.
Dont shoot the messenger just because its Roddy and you live in no ambition UCD land...
Cork had a good season last year and have a worse squad this season ?? you go figure

I think its his comments that the league is going backwards and that its like watching the old part-timers again that people are taking issue with.
The mans a joke.
We have a thin squad but i don't think any team in the eL can afford to be missing 5 first team players & hope to win the biggest game in the clubs history.
It would be like Shels losing Heary, Hawkins, Ndo, Byrne & Byrne. Derry City losing Hutton, Hargan, Molloy, Martyn, Farren. Drogs missing Gavin, Webb, Keegan, Whelan, O'Brien.
I was still very disappointed with the overall performance as too many players were hiding. Newbie O'Callaghan looked promising though & certainly very good cover for defence.
At the start of the euro season I said i would happy to get past the 1st qualifying round & see what happens afterwards. In hindsight with a full team we would have got a result at home which would have changed the complexion of the away leg completely. eL sides need to keep getting into these positions to progress.

Would have liked seeing a full strength cork side playing them over 2 legs. Apparently that knob georgie was playing:
AC Milan stand between FK Crvena Zvezda and a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage after the Serbian side completed a 4-0 aggregate win against Cork City FC with a 3-0 victory in Belgrade.
Aggressive start
A healthy crowd gathered to watch Dušan Bajević's side and Crvena Zvezda responded with an attack-minded start to the game, taking the lead after just three minutes as midfielder Dejan Milovanović volleyed past Michael Devine from 20 metres. Having seized the initiative early, they never let go and Bulgarian international midfielder Blagoy Georgiev and forward Dušan Djokić both had good chances while their opponents from the Republic of Ireland could do little in response. The result seemed all but certain after 34 minutes as Žigić headed his first of the night from eight metres.
Cork chance
The tall striker then made full use of his huge frame again after 59 minutes converting a cross from Dušan Basta from almost exactly the same position. He was then substituted with Bajević clearly keen to keep him fresh for the upcoming two-legged tie against Milan. Cork's best chance of the game came as George O'Callaghan missed the target with an effort from a corner five minutes from time.

Agreed, although I don't know if he meant just in terms of this match or in general. If he meant the latter, that is complete crap as this is the first season that all eL sides progressed a round.
I think maybe 5 years the full strength team of eL CL team would have lost 4-0 on aggregate but now its 1/2 a full strength team that lost that way.
Roddy seems to think progress can only be made by spending huge sums of money & then when club is broke manager can move onto the next victim.
CCFC is run with realistic budget which i would have thought a good thing.

Right Roddy is an idiot and I hate the guy but he has a point lads
I cant believe Cork didnt bring a striker into the squad at the start of the season and Im shocked you have not done so during the summer!
If you have a Jason Byrne in Cork you could be top of the league Id say but you dont so you will struggle with an unfit O'Flynn. What is the diffrerence in prize money from a 1st place finish and a 2nd 3rd or even 4th place finish?
Roddy is an idiot but Im delighted as a Shels fan Rico has decided to continue as is up front. You will do well to get into the top 3 this season with the squad you have.

Roddy thinks the league is going backwards because he is not in it anymore. His ego will never allow him to think otherwise.

Rico hasn't got a shortsighted chairman selling the ground and the long term sustainability of his club out from under him so of course he can't compete with Shels largesse. Different context, different future.

For all the criticism and attendances debates, if the measure of a league's strength is it's European form, we are most definately going forward. I'll personally eat my red and white hat if there isn't an Irish side in the Champions League group stages in the next 5 years, and the UEFA cup group stages in the next 3. As someone else on the forum put it recently, someone is bound to 'fluke their way through' eventually. I mean that in the best possible way though: our best teams with their strongest squads, coupled with a bit of luck, and it's definately possible. We're regularly getting to the second round of matches now, if we can go one better than that, this being football, "anything can happen."

You might want to get the salt and pepper out. While there's no doubt the league is going forward (although whether its progress is sustainable is another issue), there's a huge gap from winning first qualifying rounds to winning third qualifying rounds. There's some quality teams in the Third QR - look at Depor (drawn by Shels and, I think, by Bohs/Rosenborg) and AC Milan (drawn by Cork) for a start. The lowest seed in the CL 3rd QR this year was Liberec (28.769), who beat Rovers fairly comfortably just three years ago, after Rovers had won home and away against a Polish side (which is still a decent result now despite recent improvements).
Other teams - Liverpool, Arsenal, Valencia, Ajax, etc - we just wouldn't stand a chance against. Maybe get honorable performances against, like Shels v Lille or Depor, or Cork v Slavia/Sparta (forget which it was now!).
I agree a UEFA Cup group spot would come first. Even then, CSKA Sofia are the lowest ranked seeded opponent with a co-efficient of 21.016.
By contrast, the highest ranked opponent the LoI has knocked out in the past six years, as far as I can see, is Aberdeen (11.023), followed by Hajduk (9.647).
I'd settle for a bye to QR2 in the CL in five years, with regular exposure to the QR3.

Well that's very true, and once you reach a certain stage you meet teams who have actually budgeted on the expectation of reaching the group stages, and therefore expect a place. However, the third round is a bit like a tournament semi-final- anything could happen, previous form doesn't count as much. Obviously, Derry, Cork, or whoever, would get beaten by Arsenal, there's still a decent enough chance of getting an average side, who have a bad day. With an improving league, who knows? Plus, I don't know if you actually saw the gamer, but what I saw last Thursday at the Brandywell was excellent football- a team playing the European game and doing it well. Personally, I think some of these sides come into Europe expecting to be given respect and that's sopmething we have to work on- not giving an inch to anyone just because of a name. Cork, for instance, I believe could have got a win at home last week if they hadn't been so deferential to Red Star.
Basically, I believe we have good teams that can punch above their weight and even though I know that there will be setbacks in the future, if the overall movement is two forward, one back, I'll be more than happy.

in fairness cork had 4 of their best players missing... still Cork should have invested in a striker.

Just for the record, no City fan would disagree with you there, or Roddy ..... would i be right in saying that no one in this thread, or any other thread for that matter has disagreed with that point.
Its the final point he made that showed his true colours, the guys' credibility is falling apart at the seams, he speaks rationally and normally for a while and then goes and undoes everything he has said in one foul swoop. He has done this so many times its practically a tie between him and Alan Hunter. Tom the Gom is more consistent than him.
He does far more damage to the league than Citys poor performance, and believe me, i'm not trying to deflect any blame there.

Your logic is what exactly ???
I have pointed out how much they were spending last year as being more then what it is this year. They did very well last season in the league and in europe and again this year have progressed. My point was they seem to be in better shape now yet have a worse squad.
If the money is not there its not there BUT Brian Lennox has said it is there!
I think it is unfair to suggest that eL clubs have to make the CL group stages for real progress. I remember looking last year & i think only once did a team outside the top 20 nations make the group stages.
Winning past the 1st qualifying round on a regular basis gains more experience & the more times in the 2nd qualifying round the better chance of getting past & beyond.
IMO getting all teams past their 1st tie was a significant milestone.
