I tried do some research on Start, i tried reading the website in my best Norwegian accent but i still couldn't understand it. That's about the only effort I'm going to make. I hope they underestimate their opposition and Drogs go through. For the more knowledgeable out there, how many internationals have they got and how good are they on a scale of 1-10. 1 being Bohs, 10 begin Shels. ;)

I used an online translator on their site & got this:
"The tics am carry out and Start appointments Irish Drogheda Untited FC. Irene struck in first agony - beat edged Finish HJK 4-2 (1-1 and 3-1) and am at present at other accommodation in it Irish Prizes Division. 1 crunch at the back Shelbourne as administrator.":D

it was in the metro over here during the week that they are playing in fir park in motherwell

Motherwell or Glasgow still a good trip from the English border. Gretna seems to be a really small town so Derry may have at least half the crowd at the away leg.

Same also! Setanta will probally show our game in Scotland as they have rights to Scottish football?? anyone confirm??

i'm not sure, bbc scotland showed hibs in the uefa last year as well as celtic against artmedia, and they showed hearts the other night, so i reckon they would have it. if they are showing it on bbc scotland, i'd imagine bbc ni would take it as well

At least you know we're number one!

Serves me right I suppose. Should have picked a team from outer mongolia to pick on. Don't think their wit is up to much. Kegus Khan is right behind me.. is'nt he.:o

There'll be Scottish neutrals coming to support Gretna too.

Great two fair draws and chance for both teams to progress into group stages excellant and vaduz got basel which is a bonus

I thought there were 3 rounds before the group stages. as in they would have to win this next one and then one more to progress? hence cork getting in as the loser to milan ( if they got to the third round of the CL qualifires )?

Nowhere near Abromovich type owner. He looked into buying/raping Pats and Rovers within the last year. Mates with Roddy Collins

I used to like Gretna and now you tell me this!

That's right - qualifying rounds 1 & 2, then Round 1, followed by the group stage

Nothing interesting.

If Palermo got in they wouldn't be seeded either - they might need to run the draw again...?

All teams had to be submitted to UEFA by their respective FA's before todays draw.
If Milan get the boot, that's it, no replacement.

He's a lot more level headed than Abramovich. He's trying to make the club self sustainable after he dies and he sits amongst the fans and travels with them. Watch out for Kenny Deuchar, a qualified GP and a highly prolific goalscorer. John O'Neil was also a good playmaker in his days at Hibs and Alan Main was a great goalkeeper for many years. There's also a host of other names that have played for SPL clubs in there.

Alan Main played in goal for us against hibs last summer.

Great draw for both clubs especially being away first. Derry have great chance IMO.

The Gretna website doesn't say they're playing in Fir Park:

http://www.gretnafootballclub.co.uk/news/?p=38

Gretna have been drawn against Irish side Derry City in the UEFA Cup Second-Round Qualifying Stage.

The Black & Whites will make their European debut at Raydale Park on the 10th August, with the second-leg at The Brandywell Stadium, Derry on the 24th August.

Gretna website:

Gretna have been drawn against Irish side Derry City in the UEFA Cup Second-Round Qualifying Stage.

The Black & Whites will make their European debut at Fir Park, Motherwell on the 10th August, with the second-leg at The Brandywell Stadium, Derry on the 24th August.

Derry City progressed after a famous 2-0 aggregate win over two-time UEFA Cup winners IFK Göteborg of Sweden. The Eircom Premier Division side are 13 games into their season and are currently third, two points behind leaders Shelbourne.

They must have made a mistake first time

Although there is then a first round proper before the group stages so you have to win 3 ties to get there. 2 qualifying rounds and then the first round proper.

Since I'm stilling hanging around here waiting for news about Joxer and if a move to LSK is emerging, I can give you some info.

First of, everybody in Norway speaks, writes and read english so there should be no prob going to their forum for further discussion.

Start, as you know, ended second last year after leading the league most of the season, but horrible last part of their season gave the title to Vålerenga. And the trend seems to have continued trough this season. Recently they fired their coach, Tom Nordli, and assigned the assistant coach of the Norwegian national team, Stig Inge Bjørnebye.

That seems to have them pretty much back on track as we knew them first part of last years season. Lately they've beaten the current leader of the Norwegian league, Brann, in the cup and last weekend it was Rosenborg who got sent home with a defeat.

They have some very good midfielders in Hæstad and Strømstad, who both is considered regulars in the national squad. Their defense is tight, but the keeper and attackers seems to be their soft spot.

As for their new coach, Bjørnebye, he had a long spell with Liverpool from 92 until 2000 and then in Blackburn until 2002 when he had to retire due to an eye-injury.

I heard on the radio today that the assistant coach regarded this draw as very good for Start.

Best Regards

I hate to say so, as I really hate Vålerenga, but yes he's good. Though it seems like he does not progress as fast as many thought he would do when he joined Vålerenga. Considering he's a striker, he doesn't score that many goals. I would like to have him in LSK.

Bad news for you on that!

At his own request Joxer and Bohs have started talking about a new contract.

When that contract is up, he'll look at moving back to England, but a move to Norway is dead in the water.

All of this is down to our new elite training facilites at DCU, as he wants to do a bit of study! :o

right so let me get this straight.drogheda have a team from the lower reaches of the norweigen league and derry get a team of Scottish part timers(i follow them for betting purposes).add all this to the fact the winners go to the uefa cup proper.now am i right i find it hard to believe because if it is its our best chance of having one if not two teams in the competiton proper

Start are 12th in a 14 team league but it's a very tight table. Gretna have just been promoted to the Scottish 1st Division but they have a squad of experienced former SPL players and a hugely prolific GP up front and are backed by a lot of money.

Dazzy
28/07/2006, 8:32 PM
Gretna should beat them quite comfortably, even if the game is at Fir Park and not Raydale.

Put it this way, Derry city are just another pub team, but they are no Artmedia Bratislava. They are a part-time Irish team, were a definite step-up in quality.

taken off some of the bbc forums:D Are they Swedes??:D

gretna are no mugs- they are mostly pro andprobably as good as a mediocre spl side at this point - well bottom six anyway

they have a lot of heart and probably see this as a good draw for them too. all in all having seen both sides in the last 12 months I reckon derry have the edge but it's close and no reason why derry can't go through but they'll need to be at their best.
