View Full Version : Uefa Cup Latest: C'mon Derry & Drogs
Brilliant results - a total disgrace that one of these games wasnt on TV. I listened on the radio - atmosphere at Dayler sounded unreal

...
Sure, it was only the UEFA Cup
That's why. RTE are only interested in the CL.

But think of the quality programming that would have to have been sacrificed. And also it takes week to drive the poor old OB truck unit up from cork to the land far far away in Dublin! Hard work for RTE like.

Drogs were awfully direct tonight and created little if anything from play, but their perseverance and their defending were exemplary, as was their hardcore support. Didn't begin to match HJK technically until Zayed was introduced but for sheer persistence deserved the win (even if the foul on Barrett which induced the second penalty looked to have taken place outside the box.)

Let's hope it's a case of a rising tide lifts all ships. Unfortunately this great success still only makes a minor ripple in the media. Hopefully though the seeds of future continued progress are being sewn now with an ever improving coefficient.
Well done to both clubs, Derry in particular, absolutely top quality European results, possibly the best ever over two legs for an Irish side.

Keep that coefficient rising... Rovers will need it soon!

I actually enjoyed the Drogheda match...HJK just couldn't deal with them and imo, it was a pretty comfortable, easy win. Looked as if they'd score from every set-piece and really were never seriously threatened except maybe a run of corners in the last few minutes of normal time.
(Last two visits now to the Dump end have been 3-1 wins in my favour;) :) )

When calling out the European results, the Blonde Bimbo on SSN described the teams as:
"Irish League" side, Derry City....
The other Irish winners were "Drogeda"....
The Coup de Depth came when Portadown and Glentoran were described as beaten "League of Ireland sides"....
Get out that guide book to clubs in the League of Ireland, and the Irish League quick, madam!

make no mistake. it's not the people of sligo who think summer soccer isnt working. just admin crowd at club. even our manager stated it was working great -while in same article our commercial manager said it didnt - united stance from club :D

Correction if I may Gary, AFAIK Rovers admin crowd as you put it, is not saying summer football is not working. What they are saying is that it has not effected the crowds in a positive manner. I think our manager was speaking football, while our commercial was speaking attendance.
Everybody agrees football has improved.

Fantastic results both clubs did the league proud last night and in fairness Cork have already done so this season whatever happens in Belgrade.
I think the criticism of Drogheda's style is a bit unfair. They also passed the ball very well last night. I thought Jason Gavin was caught for the goal but it was well taken. Great fightback though and a well deserved win. Well done to the linesman who gave the first (blatant) penalty as the referee was bottling it. He brought his whistle to his mouth about 20 times and never blew.
Great atmosphere too eventhough the crowd was poor. It didn't even look like the official figure of 3,700.
Anybody know why we had the heavy garda presence last night? Nobody allowed in the lane without a ticket.
One sour note was that only 300 programmes were apparently printed and they were difficult to get on the night.

I know its been said b4 but what a great nite for all fans of eL.
Just wanted to say that fair play to BBC NI news doing their sports report from the Brandywell and the athmosphere was really building at that stage. RTE & TV3 get ur act together....RTE news just had the Derry & Drogs matches mentioned as fixtures. No build up at all. Disgusting.

Official attendance was 3,751, which to me seemed about right. Jodi was full (2,800) plus about 900 or so on the Connaught Street side, and maybe a hundred in The Shed.
I must say I really enjoyed it (and following Drogheda in Europe is a damn sight easier than cheering for Shels or Bohs). Drogheda's direct style proved too much for HJK, and should have been enough to see them off in normal time. Also, the fact that their heads didn't drop when the goal went in was impressive.

Brilliant night for the league. Well done to Derry and Drogheda.
Years ago Martin Lawlor said Irish clubs should drop out of Europe cos the results were so bad and now Keely and Matthews want to go back to those days??
Summer football is the best thing to happen to this league.

Ireland now the lowest ranked country with all 3 teams left. 37th now, next target Macedonia.
Huge night for the league to have all 3 teams past the 1st qulaifying round. Seeding would ensure good chance of that hhappening every year.

that's fair enough redzer. i'd agree attendances have not gone up as anticipated. i just got the impression that because it hasnt that summer football has been given the thumbs down at the club. fair point on football vs commercial view.

This is the first time ever that all 3 teams have got through the first round (close last year until Longford imploded!) - great to see the results getting better each year:ball: fingers crossed for the draw now
Was in Dayler for the Drogs game - great atmosphere & the right result too:D Well done Drogs & Derry.

I was in the Connaught stand 0 probably about 1,000-1500 of us there (hard to tell, but the lads from Burdocks certainly did a brisk trade over our side:D )
The school end probably had about 200 & the Jodi was fairly full - certainly more than 2,500 anyway (afaik it has 3,200 seats & there were not more than 300 empty - quite a few standing in the aisles at the back too!). So I'd say the 'official' figure was shy of about 500 people;)
