I was chatting to a Manulla official and he conveyed his disgust at the Westport United supporters for the alleged abuse dished out at Damien McGrath at the match on Sunday. The same official was so sickened that he left after 20 minutes. Westport United fans are the most admired at junior level in the country but do you think was it the ref or the fans that was out of order?

Difficult tie in the Junior Cup. Porto on the 17th Dec. If we can replicate our performances against Pike Rovers and Killester in Dublin, who knows?
Heatmerchants on Sunday (if pitch is playable).

The forumites would like to wish the legendary goalkeeper for Westport United, Martin McGreal, a very happy 30th birthday. There was a surprise party for him in The Jester on Friday night and the music was expertly performed by Mac Vac. The die hards came in and made it a good boozing night.:D

Thunderblaster, hope you play better than you did the day against Killester up here, never seen a team as lucky. Justice was seen to be done last season when they bashed you in your own back yard. You will have it handy against Porto as they are down 6 first teamers through injury and lost 9 in the Summer through retirement etc.

Looks like we will struggle. Lack of practice and not playing particularly well. Not sure whether we have a full squad ourselves. Two of our best players are in Australia.

Tunderblast you are coming up with excuses already. Yes you are missing two players in Oz. Get over it, every team has these problems with players travelling or injured. The real issue is that your youth policy is not producing enough players to fill in the gaps. I know having such a great team makes it harder for young players to break into but seeing the older players used this season I am sure you must have younger players as good or better. Give up using the OZ excuse.

There are mind games and there are mind games. One would need to be extremely gullible to fall flat on their faces to buy into that. Porto are no mugs and there will certainly be no complacency from anybody and it will definitely NOT be handy. I expect Porto to have a pretty strong starting XI.
The 4-1 game in Westport was partly flattering. Had Danny scored at 2-1, could have been different. We were sloppy that day defensively. There is great friendship between ourselves and Killester United.

That is true. Over the years, our youth teams were concentrated on a particular good side rather than collectively, and the story is what you sow is what you reap. It is improving now but there is still a lot of work for that to attain a desireable level to make the club strongly competitive in the future.
I am sure you must have younger players as good or better. Give up using the OZ excuse.
Apart from a couple U.16s downwards, I'm afraid not. That is the price of a failed underage policy.

Thunderblast, Best of luck on Sunday. It will a difficult game but one I expect Utd. to win if the Ref is fair. As for the Killister game last year I taught that they were well worth their 4-1 and could have been more. Utd just did not preform on the day and I was sure that I saw the 2006 Junior Cuo winners that day. One of the best teams I have seen since Mervue during the CSL days. But anyway that seems like years ago. Once again best of luck and also to your next favourite team Castlebar Celtic.

Greetings from the Clayton Square Shopping Centre in Liverpool and good morning to you all. Hear that Eoghan McHale is awaiting results of a scan for his dislocated shoulder and could be out for a couple of months, depending on the extent of the injury. The U.14s lost 2-0 to Salthill Devon in the Lions Club tournament on Wednesday. Westport could have been 3-0 up before Salthill took command of the game but the better side won it out at the end.
Any football gossip from the 'Port?
Looking at the FAI Junior Cup draw, if we had beat Porto, we would have made the long trip to Buncrana to take on Lagan Harps!! Our Derry friends like Stevie Wilkinson have missed out on a short trip to see the Red and Black play and to meet up with the wonderful Covey Army!!:D Anyhow, June 19th 2005 in Buckley Park, Kilkenny is something we can always treasure.

Is Joe Lawless suspended for the Connacht Cup. I read he played in the FAI Junior Cup. Just as well Utd were beaten as I though that his suspension was to be served in the Junior Cup. As per usual great thinking by the Mayo league suspending the Leagues best player when his team is playing away in the Junior Cup. Utd should win handy enough on Sunday. Best of Luck to the largest travelling away support in Junior Soccer.

Dear Concerned,
Where have you been all this time, since when did Westport have a club? I would have thought a club was where a team,
could call there own ground, like all our big clubs in Mayo. Long gone are the days where you are a sitting tenent in Mayo. To be fair they did try to get some field but were shot down, which of course was unfair due to Captains of the industrailist. Where you there shouting from the roof tops to help them.
To be fair to the committee they are hard working bunch,of course being well paid?( only joking) who are you to jug=dge who is Qualified? they would have to be, at leased have a level one coaches on there staff.
regards to youths playing junior football, There are rules.
1.youth players must sign consent from on reg by his parents before he can play
2. he must have passed his 16th Birthday.
By the way only members of the club can vote at A.G.M.
I strongly advise you to get a life or leased help to guide the club in the direction you feel it should be taking.

I read your first post regarding you concerns of the Youths in UTD FC. All I can say is that the youth section of the club seem to have got their act together over the last two years with the club winning the top U-12 league in 2005 and the U-16 team winning the Mayo Cup in the shock of the 2005/06 season by beating a talented Celtic team. The problem with the majority of the teams is that dont have one strong team as when the likes of Lawless, Schill and Co came together. I cannot understand why this is the case as Westport U-14 GAA are Mayo Champions and Utd would have a much bigger area to pick from (Eoin Torphy is from Louisburg via Celtic)As for the Youths paying for the A & B Junior teams I dont understand your point. Is it that the Youth membership is been spent on the Senior team and not developing the coaching staff at youth level? I will be interested to see what TB has to say on the issue.

First of all, welcome aboard quay heart on the nation's NO.1 footie forum.:D
Yes, I heard that the AGM is set for the 30th January at 8:00 at the Castlecourt Hotel.
I would implore all the fans, fair weather and die hards to attend the AGM if they value their loyalty to the club.
It is an imperative that the parents attend the AGM as they are the voice representing the concerns of our underage footballers.
Underage football should not be cast aside in the dispersal of club finances as the vast majority of membership comes from that bracket, ie, the money should not be invested solely in the junior team. Underage football is at least as important if not more important than the junior team as they are the future of the club and if the underage is neglected, the whole structure will eventually fall down. I can relate back to 1999, and the talk within the club was that it would fold in five years. I was angry at that prospect and it made me really feel having to do something about it, and watching underage football, apart from one team, it was honestly an abyss. The last couple of years saw an improvement but there is honestly a long ways to go. Some of the coaches have done Kick Start 1 and a couple did Kick Start 2 and one of them is with the FAI Local Emerging Talent Programme. The club needs a strong, definitive schoolboy/youth structure in place before moving to the next level. In the last ten years, clubs in the province have caught up and overtaken Westport United in their underage structures.
With regard to the Junior Manager, there is a rule in the Mayo AFL Rule Book that Super League managers must have an FAI Youth Cert badge. I know his coaching qualifications have been questioned over the season.
Personally speaking, I want to see the parents at the AGM and I want to see everybody with the club and football at heart at the AGM and I would like to see the next committee to progress the club towards the centenary in a positive frame and to develop the kids and meet the goals to shape a great future for the club.
