What would we do without him, giles and bill? Best football commentary on t.v. imo!
Some classic dunphy from last wednesday night..
ON Cisse - " here we have Cisse, right wing, attempts to put in a cross,
BANG...hits the full back, again BANG hits the full back, BANG...off the
full back again, and once more, BANG...smacks the full back again....
Millions of euro and he can't clear the first man, I mean...what's he
trying to do to the full back here, Kill him??"
On Kewell - "Eamon, how did you rate Harry Kewell ?"
- "Fat. And a clown. A fat clown for all to see."
On Fowler - "An overweight has been. He's got more money than Liverpool!"
Mourinho didn't escape either :
"A bluffer who just got found out. Will never be at the tactical level of
Milan or Barcelona, doesn't even have the footballing intelligence even to
know why Barca beat him. Look at his claims that the best team didn't win.
Ridiculous. He's a bengal lancer"
ON Cisse and Garcia - " It was Ragball Rovers out there with Cisse and
Garcia. Look at Cisse. Somebody thought he was worth £14 million at some
stage. He's no left foot and no right. £14 million and counting. They
bought him a big mansion in Cheshire and now he's no more than a part of
the landed gentry. Absolute rubbish "
On Garcia - "What do you do with Garcia, I'll tell you what to do with
him, he should be put in a rubbish bin where he belongs "
Id much rather watch Bill,Dunphy and Giles than any other station they are pure comedy
Dunphy was previously saying how Barca had no chance at the CL. Now Barca are tactical geniuses?

And this was my response there:
The guy is an ars*hole who contradicts himself time in and time out. For instance, you quote him re Fowler:
On Fowler - "An overweight has been. He's got more money than Liverpool!"
Yet, he said Benitez should have started him in the game vs Benfica
If you want entertainment, get Podge & Rodge because they know more about football that Dumphy and Laughing Bill combined.
He's a joke and appeals to the lowest demoninator in the football fan.

I agree with Klien 4, its great to listen to regardless of wheather you like him or not , the man dosent give a rats arse , and why should he .
Im amazed so many people let him get to them , its COMEDY , nothing but , and its the best TV panel around with the exception of Ray Houghton.
Dunphy is excellent TV , I love his rants but im afraid the jury is still out regarding his views , but who cares , i agree with him on the Fowler debate. The Liverpool fans made an absolute show of themselves with their reaction to his return , the guy couldnt get a game at City and struggled at Leeds .
I was waiting for Liverpool to dig up Emlyn Hughes to complete their week.
Owls Fan takes the analysis too seriously , its only a f***in panel, its there to pull in viewers , to get you talking and nobody does it better than Eammo ,and id sooner listen to Dunphy than those clowns on Sky .
As for Bill, well, the man is just an embarassment and knows nothing about the game , you can always tell his questions are scripted and struggles to relate to anything that went on . He is to anchor man what Westlife are to music . Totally useless.
Example...Covering an Ireland home game V Denmark in the early 90's , or maybe late 80's , we were down at half time to a Preban Elkar [ spell check ] goal and Bill comes out with an absolute belter ......''Well John Giles , a bit of a POXY goal to concede '' , Yes POXY , has this man no brodcasting skills ?
As for the lowest common demonator of fan , you can include me in that catagorie because i think he's superb

Superb = personal (not football) attacks on McCarthy (pre-Saipan) (because he got the job ahead of his mate Kinnear) and on of course on Charlton whom he portrayed as an Andy Capp type person in one Sunday Indo article. This is the "journalist" who claims the British press is of the gutter variety - as they say "aithnionn ciarog ciarog eile"-roughly translated, "one cockroach recognizes another."
Superb = personal attacks on Liam Brady when he was playing for Ireland
Superb = supported the Kilcoynes in their sale of Milltown (where I spent some of the best days of my life) and almost putting the then top LoI club out of existence.
Superb = constantly getting predictions wrong while holding himself out to be an "expert".
Superb = walked out on RTE because The Apres Match Team did a skit on him - he can castigate people himself but can't then take it.
Superb = attacks people who are not there to defend themselves and then when confronted face to face sticks his head up their a*se.
I think he is a repulsive character whom only the Irish would take to their heart because we love seeing people being jeered. At every painful moment of my football life he's been there spreading his poison.
Krusty the Clown, Podge & Rodge, etc would all do a better job than him on the panel - he is a joke whom the Irish think is "good old Eammo". Pathetic............

He was also the mouth piece of "Wimbledon For Dublin" back in 1996.
Never a friend of the el. Largely because when he came back to play in it he couldn't hack for more than 18 months. He also threw his 1978 FAI Cup winners medal away I believe too. Wimbledon moved to Milton Keynes in the end in ENGLAND. SO he got that wrong too :D

So that's the key to being a panelist is it ? To say something "controversial" even though it has no basis other than an individual's bias.
I was very impressed by the RTE Panel for the rugby match yesterday and compares so much more favourably than the soccer one. The host, Tom McGuirk, knows his topic unlike Laughing Bill who is just an advertising executive acting as a soccer anchor man. Hooke is opinionated, but unlike Dumpy, knows his game locally and abroad and has an opinion based on something other than prejudice. Pope is a foreigner so he doesn't have the Irish bias and is very articulate while O'Shea is an ex-player who takes that perspective on the game. Entertaining, educated and none of the "I agree with Eamon", "I agree with John" of the RTE soccer panel and no buffoon of an anchor man laughing at everything the poison dwarf says. It is BALANCED which is what is what the RTE soccer panel with O'H, Giles and Dumpy has NEVER been.
It is also a lot easier for the RTE Soccer Panel to say such and such a player is a "donkey" etc. If the BBC Panel or Sky panels made such a comment, that would be the end of their access to players by the clubs.
RTE football pundits can say what they like because they removed from the league in england so don't have any buddies there. Still think RTEs pundits take it all far too seriously, very stuffy full suit & tie... RTE lads very slow to bring humour into what is only a game...
BBC use players are pundits so hard to be hinest about yout fellow players. On the otherhand its far more relaxed & they don't take it seriously... MOTD2 on sundays can be a welcome change sometimes...
Any way no one remembers what pundits say the next day which allows them to contradict themselves on a weekly basis.

I saw Dunphy on the Late late on Friday, I saw it last night and he was a disgrace to Mc Williams. He was bang out of order and his snide remarks to Mc Williams were below the belt. I thought Mc Williams was fantastic on it. The hypcrosy of him trying to pose as a man of the working class and poor and dismissing Mc Williams as a middle class crony.

I'll keep this in the Dunphy thread for housekeeping reasons, but the two idiots on murte tonight did themselves proud in the "We are muppet" stakes tonight. Without the drunken clown it was a chance for Ray and Johnny to show they are in touch with the game and even had a valuable insight into the game today. By gum, all they did was make themselves look like complete and utter muppets.
Giles slating Arsenal for securing their 8th clean sheet in a row (which he didn't know about til Freddie said it in an interview). He said I don't know who is second in Italy, but I'd put the house on them winning the league after seeing Juve tonight (neglecting to mention they were without about 5 or 6 superb players). Ray piped in with a mention of the fact that he has been in "Villareal" and it's small so he thinks they should be walloped by the Arsenal. Wegner is then quoted as saying it all went to plan, which it clearly did and they say he's a liar that they were right all along????????????
I ask you really, you couldn't make this stuff up. Then the laughing clown in the corner decides to turn to Celtic's success and instead turns it into a witch hunt against Neil Lennon and Gordan Strachan for not playing an injured Roy Keane, or at least not fawning over him despite the fact he's been finished for three years.
Oh God, I need to lie down before I hurt one of them.
Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot the plum who does the voice over of the highlights from last night's games saying at the end that there are only 45,000 people where Villareal are and that Eircom league teams should take note. Take note of what you scum bag? The fact that some filthy rich guy has invested millions into them, unlike our idiot millionaire's in Ireland who all want to invest in Villa, United and Celtic? To be honest I thought Giles was spot on last night in a lot of what he said. Giles weakness is knowing the names of players and stats etc. However I don't think there is any better reader of the game on TV. He called it as it was last night which was a poor Arsenal performance against a club that is in dissarray at the moment and the Italian game has huge problems.

I didn't see the game lads but how anyone can say 0-0 away to Juventus (whether they were missing players or not) is a poor performance is beyond me:confused: . Liverpool did it last year and it was classed as a great performance.
I'm sure all Arsenal fans would've taken that before a ball was kicked. I don't think I can ever recall Giles and co giving credit where it's due.
NeilMcD
06/04/2006, 10:02 AM
Its probably due to the fact that their is a difference between the performance and the result. Giles analysed the game last night from a performance perspective and said it was a poor performance by Arsenal. It was a good result though. But in the context of how badly Juve played it was not such a good performance. Last season Juve were a bit better than they were last night and I think I remember Giles sayilng that LIverpool were no great shakes either but that they defended very well.

That's about the size of it. Giles think's he has to be like the drunk when the drunk ain't there. Even when bumbling Bill put it to him that Wegner was happy the game went to plan he called Wegner a liar and that he pay's no attention to what managers say. Insightful indeed.

To be fair Clifford Giles is bang on when he says he pays not attention to what managers say. One of the most pointless interviews is the post match interview with a manager. They say nothing about the game and they generally just say howe well their team played and hwo it went to plan as it makes them look good. Wenger, Ferguson Benitez and Mourinhio are all guiltly of this. So on this issue Giles is bang on. The point to be made is that Arsenal did enough but from a neutrals perspective it was not a good game and it was a poor performance by both sides with Juve even worse as they were the team that needed to force the game.

He didn't refer to aftermatch interviews, he just said he pay's no attention to managers. Shocking really seeing as he was such a good one himself.
I'm a neutral in respect to last nights game and it was what I expected. No idea where Glies got the idea it was going to be a goal fest. I knew what Arsenal were going to set up to do, they did it, they did it quite well and they advance over two legs. Can't see the issue.

I think he meant in relation to after match interviews etc but if not he does have a point as managers play a media game nowadays and very few are like Martin O Neill and Stuart Pearce and call ilt as it is. Most of them see things with rose tinted glasses on and see it from their perspective. Just look at Paul Jewel and Mark Hughes reaction to the same incident the other night. That is why we have pundits to offer objective comment, not to cheerlead as they do on Sky. If Giles is pour inga bit of cold water on Arsenals celebrations so be it but that job of a pundit is not to pander to the masses.

2nd I would have to take you up on saying Wenger is one of the greatest managers ever What exactly do you mean by that. How good do you have to be to be one of the greatest managers ever. In the top 10 ever, or to 20 of club managers or what. I can name 10 better than him.

Performance and result - a thin line. Arsenal restricted Juve to a few half chances. Is that not a good performance ? Sure they gave the ball away on occasions but it was an enjoyable enough game to watch. Not a masterclass of football but Arsenal attacked when they could so it was a good performance and result. A poor performance would have been them being carved open time and time again and lucky to survive.
Sometimes the RTE Panel is opinionated for the sake of being opinionated.
