Research would seem to indicate that Kearney was indirectly taking ther FAI to court/FIFA thru the PFAI & FiPro over freedom of transfer when contracts have expired. FIFA rules also seemed to indicate that if your contract expired while you U-23 compo was due even if you over 23 when re-sign.

Its possible this will be a landmark eL case in years to come.

Also quiet clear that Kearney never wanted to resign for City having initially accepted an improved contract only to change his mind & decide to hold out til end of last season dispite numerous improved offers. If he stayed would have been one of best paid in the club.

I'm hoping for City v Shels first game of the season. When Ollie Cahill made similar move he had a disasterous debut losing 3-0 & was so bad his team-mates wouldn't pass the ball to him. Likie it or not Kearney will be singled out by CCFC fans this season.

Has any tribunal ever found against Shels? Maybe the Cawley one but then didn't the FAI end up paying their fine?

Maybe the UCD lads know the details...

This wasn't about Shels. It was all Kearney, if anything it looks more likely he'll go up to Drogs. Christ, blame Shelbourne though, it is the easiest thing to do...

They are all sorts of rumours floating around about Kearney. Lennox messed him about, not enough cash e.t.c If as you claim he would have been the highest earner then why did he actually want to leave? If I was a Cork fan I would be worried that spice boys like Kearney were getting paid more than commited and much more talented players i.e Joe Gamble

I don't see $hels signing him as a big deal because he is vastly over-rated. Killian Brennan, Brian Cash, Gareth Mc Glynn and Horse-features Ryan with $hels are all much better wingers.

Think he was going to one of the best paid. Doubt he'd be near Gamble or O'Callaghan the freak.

Has nay tribunal ever found against Shels?

How could this tribunal possibly "find against" Shels? It was all about Kearney and Cork ffs. Jeez, you don't miss an "opportunity" do you?

An independent tribunal in Dublin this afternoon has ruled in favour of Liam Kearney and against Cork City FC in the dispute regarding Kearney's status. The tribunal has ruled that Liam Kearney is a free agent and Cork City are entitled to no compensation for the player should he now as expected sign for another club. The club were represented at the tribunal today by club secretary Jerry Harris and barrister Patrick Horgan.

Speaking to CorkCityFC.ie, City chairman Brian Lennox was unhappy with the outcome. "We are disappointed with the verdict from the tribunal. We have contributed a lot towards Liam Kearney's career during his time at the club and the decision is disheartening". There is no appeal available against the decision.

Quite the contrary. The FAI witheld the money from Shel's prize money and gave it directly to UCD. Shels did pay for it.

I'm slightly annoyed to see this ruling as UCD rely on this compo rule to prevent players from fecking off fast without return. I know it only slightly changes things but it's a little more power tipped in the balance of the player.

If that's the FIFA rule, then on what grounds did the tribunal find against CCFC? Does the eL not obey FIFA rules?

I would be interested in the legal basis for such a decision, because as Pete points out, this would seem to set a precedent. This could hurt all Irish clubs over the coming years. Like it or not, we're still a selling league and if we can't sell players for cash, then it'll cost all our clubs in the long run.

Gamble has resigned contract so not going anywhere for next 3 years. Kearney was first choice winger as no other option & was dropped due to poor form near end of the season. He did score league winning season but it was clear especially after the FAI Cup final he didn't want to stay. My impression is that this got too personal with his father representing him in contract talks.

The story that seems to be the most agreed upon on the CCFC website, is that he was offered a better deal verbally, and the improvements were added to his wages immediately. When asked to sign the contract and make it official, sometime later, he refused and said he wanted to wait until the end of the season. Lennox wanted the extra money back and that led to the row.

This isn't gospel or anything, just a version of the story on the CCFC forum, and IMO the most likely.

Unless Cork make some quality signings they wont be winning leagues. How can you pip a team to the league and lose two quality players and not replace them? Who would play left wing instead of kearney and who is better cover and more versatile than o'halloran?

Greg and Liam are terrible losses and I'm not best pleased we let them go but we still have a very very strong team (if not much strength in depth).

Our starting 11 against Limerick yesterday is as good or better than anyone else in the el.

Devine
Hoggy Bennett Murray Murphy
O'Brien Gamble Georgie
Fenn
Flynny Behan

And Roy O'Donovan would normally be an automatic starter too.

Yes our starting eleven the best in the league which worked well for us last season with few injuries. Quality players in short supply so we will be screwed with few key injuries this season. Looks like will have to wait until July for new players.

Interesting there has been few if any cross channel signings this season but thats a different topic...

I agree your first 11 is as good as any in the league but there is no depth in the squad. You lost willie bruton and kevin murray as well as the other two. If you get a few long term injuries then your hammered. Its different if you keep your squad fit all season but then that will just burn out the players. At the minute as far as depth and strenth derry and shels have the best squads and thats why i think it will be a two horse race for the title this year.:p

Legitimate points.
I think Richardson and Lennox are making good decisions which are low-risk and will improve each players own performance.
Rico might be guilty of putting two much faith in the players he has. I reckon we'll be starting with Fenn and Behan and Johnno which will be interesting.
He's spoken a lot about not wanting to upset the balance in any sort of way in the squad so i think Paul Connell will be the only player brought in as such despite all the trialists. He's looked a mixture of very promising and decent but is a ridiculously enthusiastic young fella. Time will tell.

Also, the likes of Lally, Lordan, Softic, McCarthy and Nolan will get full decent opportunities and have decent experience now at this stage. Lennox has faith in what the club are operating at Colaiste Stiofan Naofa and we'll only be vindicated by it and last years loaning out of young players if they're actually given the proper opportunity at the end of it all.
Also with the hiring of nutritionists, new physio, sports psychologist, Dave Hill and a few young fellas going full-time plus an announcement on new training facility imminent, there's every reason to be satisfied.

We're making the absolute maximum of what we have whilst securing the future.

Well said. BL wants City to be able to stand on it's own without a crippling debt and to be fair to City, they are one of the only clubs in such a strong position.

Cork City got what they deserved from this independant tribunal. It's ridiculous that Cork City allegedly were seeking between Eur50k to Eur75k for a player to whom they showed no respect during recent transfer negotiations. The player leaves as a free agent but suddenly the club value him at 75k!!! If Cork had ambition they should have equalled Shelbourne's contract offer and I'm sure a local lad like Kearney would have stayed but instead the Cork "balls'ed" Kearney out. What twisted remedial behaviour from a club who claim to have ambition!

Cork City's ambition is to run the club in a tightfisted amatuerish fashion and fluke the odd league perhaps once every 10 years. Gob****es in Cork

Were not spending money that we dont have, simple as that, unlike other clubs

If we have a team that was good enough to win the league with the highest points total ever then why change things around that much, look at shels last year for a prime example of too much tinkering.

Kearney was offered one of the best deals the club ever offered afaik and he rejected it so not much the club could have done really was there?as far as the tribunal goes,it was worth a shot because according to the rules City were due compensation but it seems the rules are being changed because of that particular case, again not much the club could have done about it

WUM

Exactly ..... not even a WUM, a clueless one at that !!

I have highlighted things to prove that he is infact clueless, the first ... you blantantly dont know how the negotiations went, but if you do want to fill yourself in, go to the official site and track the events for the last year. Pay particular attention to the amount of offers City made and Kearneys reaction to those offers, look at the time scale as well during all these events.

Until you know what happened, then you are simply shooting your mouth off .... would i be right in saying that you know you are too ??

Second you said City should have equalled Shels offer .... now i dont know where you did your maths but i definitely think you should first do a bit of homework on what was on offer (several times from City) and what was on offer from Shels ...... when you have those figures .... then go a do the maths.

When you have all that done .... come back on here and we'll discuss it further. We'll all be waiting for your reply !!
I take it you're a Shels fan yeah, you should know all about independant tribunals shouldn't you .... care to tell us how some of yours went in the past .... that is bound to add some colour to the debate !! :D

Lads - All tribunals aside and looking at the football I think Kearney had a very .. very average season last season if you take his perfoemances as a whole. (No one can doubt he was very good in 2004) Personally I think the main reason Kearney got his game last season was because there was no one else to take his place on the left wing (Inc. Billy) It will remain to be seen if Kearney actually gets a game at Shels come next September.

I genuinely think that Kearney is a bad signing for Shels - I doubt he will have as good a season as he had in 2004 which will be wages badly spent.

Without being sour grapes - your welcome to him in my opinion Shels!!
