I hope Im bloody well wrong here, but I have heard from two seperate people this morning that Derek has left Cork City after failing to agree terms on his new contract.

The two I heard this off dont even know each other so this may not be bull.

If its true, then can we really expect to stay in the top division next season. I think not!

I just hope that this rumour is groundless.

Napier and O'Rourke are better footballers anyway.

Still, it would be a loss.

This'll be a disaster if it's true.

being honest,as far as i can see derek has unfortunately started to hoof the ball too much,he was a class player, with a good pass.he's avery valueable asset to the club and this would be very bad news !
hopefully its not true

DEREK IS OUR HERO HE LOOKS LIKE ROB DE NIRO!

If true, this will prove to be disasterous. After losing Ollie, losing Derek too could plunge us into the depths of a relegation battle next season:( :(

Lets just hope its not true.

 So we loose 2 players, its not like we dont have good cover in the back and it looks like we will sign someone to replace Ollie. Stop being so hysteric (after all you are forgetting how cr@p the teams below us are!). Relax COLM:)

like who?!

The only teams I'd put below us at the moment is Drogheda Longford (no disrespect to Longford fans!).

Droghada, Longford, UCD:( & Bray.
UCD & Bray both had exceptional seasons last year, but Bray wont be the same team next year, they have lost Keegan to Bohs asnd another of their players this morning to Rovers I think it was. UCD have lost Ciaran Martin to Derry and Doolo isnt getting any older as they say. Also I think that the summer season will have a negative affect on UCD as it will be away from the acidemic year now. I feel we can match Derry, especially as they rely so much on Liam Coyle who seems to get injured quite frequently now a days.
We had one of our worst years last year and still managed to finish mid table and had an outside chance of Europe. Things arent great, but we arent exactly Division 1 material.

I'd like to think that too, but you can never be sure of anything.

So you're not ruling us out of winning the league, with Gunther getting the Soccer Writer's Personality of the Year Award? :D ;) :p

i have to say, i heard this too but thought it was just hearsay. Anyone hear that as Hoggie is going to be studying in Dublin next year that he could be on his way too?

From what I've heard he's going doing the 1 year post grad in DIT so that he can become a Solicitor which is a fairly intensive course (you particallly have to do a law degree in one year) I doubt he'd have much time for traveling.

He was quoted in the Echo as saying he wanted to stay with City so maybe he could train with UCD or someone and play on match days with City.

As for the Derek thing I'd say he's just trying to call the clubs bluff.

wouldn't be the first time. As someone said to me when I told them of the rumour "he seems like he's been trying to leave for ages." If the guy really wants out, then there's no advantage in keeping him. I'm more worried about Hoggy to be honest, he's been one of our best players in the last 2 seasons.

Derek is just a Big Time Charlie who thinks he is better than he actually is.

Remember the Brighton thing whereby he couldn't play for the first month of the season as he thought he was going to the UK.

This is becoming an annual 'Call My Bluff' situation, sign up Willie De Flah from Cobh and let Coughlan shag off

I don't think we did. It's just that the previous year was so awful. Don't forget that we finished 4th the year before that

UCD have lost Ciaran Martin to Derry

Ciaran Martyn barely played last year and when he did he was played out of position and didn't play well.

Well, going by the year before last, UCD did have an exceptional year, and finishing 4th was a fluke that deffinaly wouldnt happen now. I think College will stay mid table, but not come as close to the top clubs while not become worried by religation.

RE Ciaran Martyn, you need a squad, not a team.

RE Doolin, he's the heart of the team & we struggle without him (Derry in the Cup @ Belfield? We would have won if he was playing) He will be replaced earlier and earlier in matches and the teams composur will diminish leaving them open to conseeding goals in the last 15 minutes

Isn't that what happened last year? Wouldn't that make it not an exceptional year then?

True but losing a squad player is hardly going to send us into terminal decline

That is a worry, we need someone to hold the team together in those sort of situations (a captain!). Aidan Lynch leaving is a blow in that regard.

When did this happen???

What I ment about the mid-table thing was that UCD this year came very close to sneaking above the likes of Cork, Derry and Bohz, but I dont think that it will happen every year, Id say there will be more of a gap, without them actually being worried about religation

I suppoert CCFC (As you well know;) ) but obviously I keep an eye out for UCD and wish them luck in their non-City matches.
Satisfied? :) :p

He's gone to the Drogs apparently (pending a fitness test I think). I heard about it this week but I'm not sure when it was decided.

Bringing this back to the thread in question.

Derek has always looked like he wanted out so wouldn't be surprised if he trying again.

Sure derek can't pass but he a collosal in the air & the real problem has been finding a partner for him who can play the ball. Don't forget derek is lethal taking those freekicks - he'll surely hit the wall one of thses days.

LOL :D Seriously though, I always thought Derek and Napier were a good partnership- napier does try to bring the ball out of defence without hoofing all the time.

Yeah I suppose Napier does take that extra touch before hoofing whereas Derek just hits it first time. :D

However after that Derry home game on tv it was obvious gunther had told all the players to get the ball forward (fancy way of saying hoof it) at the earliest opportunity.

Maybe we could have a chant for Gunther? "Are You Charlton in Discuise?"
Bobby obviously ;)
