I heard on the radio it was a serious kidney infection so it might be totally unrelated.

I think that he has had a bad reaction to the drugs he is taking to help cut the cravings for the booze thus they have affected his kidneys.

It's pretty sickening the way the papers have been in such a rush to kill off George. Like with the Liam Lawlor story they'd rather rush a false story in to print than check their facts and potentially miss out on a "scoop".

I'm just dreading what might happen if Martin O'Neill's wife takes a turn for the worse. The indications are that the FAI might delay naming a new manager while they wait to see how the O'Neill situation "develops", i.e. whether his wife recovers/dies.

Are you surprised though.

Its alot like the We're all going to die scenario RE: Bird Flu.

******* papers, leave the man get better in peace, actually just occurred to me, where he dying at this moment, he can't even die in peace! We all say how upset Law was there's just no need to be this intrusive!

As regards the FAI, Martin O'Neill will be either too involved with his wife entirely, or working For Man Utd by the time they understand what to do :/

Severe infection is 'big setback' for Best
18/11/2005 - 13:28:23

Football legend George Best has suffered a “big setback” in his battle to recover from illness in hospital, the doctor treating him said today.

Professor Roger Williams said Best, 59, had a “new and severe infection”.

The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star was admitted to Cromwell Hospital in west London last month where his condition deteriorated and he was taken to intensive care.

Until recently he had been improving but he has now taken a turn for the worse, Professor Williams said.

Outside the hospital he said: “Mr Best is not so well. He has been admitted back to intensive care. He has got a new and severe infection.

“He is on dialysis and he is very poorly at the moment. He was improving every day until yesterday afternoon and he was really pretty good.

“He was maintaining some progress each day and now he has acquired another infection as these patients are very susceptible to infection at this stage of recovery.”

Best’s infection is causing problems “with kidneys and everything else again”.

He added: “His breathing is OK. He is having oxygen but he is not on a ventilator.

“It is a big setback after some steady progress over the last two weeks.”

Professor Williams said he did not know how long Best would be in intensive care but he had a team of doctors with him and his girlfriend and his manager were both at the hospital today.

He added: “He is conscious and just about talking. He was admitted at about 6am this morning from a ward upstairs.

“He is eating and was making good progress but we are all very disturbed at a sudden setback like this.”

The professor said he was hoping the infection would respond to antibiotics.

“We are not sure where the infection is. There are so many places it could be,” he said.

Asked if the current infection was life threatening, he said: “He is very ill at the minute so we’ll see how it goes during the day.”

Best put on life support machine (http://pheeds.org/pgzrwp)

Former football star George Best has been put on a life-support machine, a hospital spokesman has said.

Doctors at Cromwell Hospital in London said the 59-year-old was stable in the intensive care unit after being on the machine since Friday.

"We are following all medical avenues to try to keep him stable," Dr Akeel Alisa said.

A hospital spokesman said Best was suffering from a lung infection, and that his condition was "serious".

George Best's hours 'are numbered'
24/11/2005 - 13:12:38

Football legend George Best is “coming to the end of the long road of his ill-health”, his doctor said today.

Professor Roger Williams warned that Best, 59, could die at any time.

“He’s still alive, he’s still having standard medical care and treatment but I have to tell that his hours are numbered now,” he said.

Prof Williams added: "I would be very surprised if he survives another 24 hours.''

Best is being treated in the intensive care unit at the private Cromwell Hospital, west London, after he suffered a lung infection.

Overnight his condition deteriorated and there is no longer anything doctors can do, Prof Williams said.

Clearly upset Prof Williams, who has been overseeing Best’s treatment, told reporters outside the hospital: “It’s the final stage of this illness and I am afraid he could die at any time over the next 24 hours.”

Best’s son Calum, 24, his father Dickie, 87, and other family members were at his bedside, but he was no longer conscious or aware of what was happening.

The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star had a controversial liver transplant in 2002 after his existing liver failed following years of alcohol abuse.

Best, who ignored pleas to stay off the booze after the operation, was admitted to the hospital on October 1 suffering from a flu-like infection.

His health deteriorated rapidly when he developed a kidney infection but he then rallied and his condition was thought to be improving until the early hours of Friday when he suffered a severe setback.

He developed a lung infection and was put back on a ventilator in intensive care but remained alert.

However, his condition worsened again on Tuesday night.

In 1976, Northern Ireland were drawn against Holland in Rotterdam as one of their group qualifying matches for the World Cup. Back then the reporters stayed at the same hotel as the team and travelled with them on the coach to the game. As it happened I sat beside George on the way to the stadium that evening.

Holland - midway between successive World Cup final appearances - and Johan Cruyff were at their peak at the time. George wasn't. I asked him what he thought of the acknowledged world number one and he said he thought the Dutchman was outstanding. 'Better than you?' I asked. George looked at me and laughed. 'You're kidding aren't you? I tell you what I'll do tonight... I'll nutmeg Cruyff first chance I get.' And we both laughed at the thought.

Five minutes into the game he received the ball wide on the left. Instead of heading towards goal he turned directly infield, weaved his way past at least three Dutchmen and found his way to Cruyff who was wide right. He took the ball to his opponent, dipped a shoulder twice and slipped it between Cruyff's feet. As he ran round to collect it and run on he raised his right fist into the air.

Only a few of us in the press box knew what this bravado act really meant. Johan Cruyff the best in the world? Are you kidding? Only an idiot would have thought that on this evening

absolutely phenomenal player, and if he had'nt been consumed by alcohol he would arguably have become the greatest player to ever live, even better than roy keane some might say !!

words can not describe the genius of this man, not from brazil but from the back streets of belfast, he lived the dream for most of us and his brillance will never be forgotten.

the two stories i will remember most are,

once in a united game he got the ball on the half way line and decided to score, even when there were 7 players in his way.......he did it

the other is the famous story in vegas, he can back to his suite in the with a bottle of champagne, $20,000 he had won in the casino and miss world on his arm....and the bell boy said..........mr best,"where did it all go wrong !!"

i grew supporting united and remember my father and uncle speaking of him and when i saw the old footage of the man, i was just amazed and dumbfounded.

as pele said, the greaest footballer who has ever lived.

This is a day of national sadness up here in Northern Ireland. Very unlikely we'll ever have one as good as him again.

I hope tomorrow during the Irish League games that everyone will respect a minute of silence and that all players of every team will have a black armtape on. That's the least they can do.

Also, I hope that everyone will not remember the alcohol problems etc, but remember the great player he was.

RIP and the best of strength to the relatives and close friends.

Considering he pretty much packed in his career at 26 he must have been one hell of a player to earn the praise he does today.

"George Best is the best player in the world"

Maradona (when asked: Who was his own footballing hero?)
"George Best. He's my idol."
