😀 im on topic. Dundalk should get there but i remember us almost blowing the league from an unlosable position in 2010 (or was it 11). Ucd hitting great form and might even be favs for the play offs. Imagine if bray and ucd came up (i know it wont happen) a ten team.division with rovers, shels, bohs, pats, ucd, bray and drogs as 7 "dublin" clubs. 😀

Athlone under Buckley were romping the 1st Division one year and totally collapsed. Shels the year we were promoated in Station Road were in control when our season was over and then certaon Colin Scanlon upended their season. Galway should have been out of the 1st Division quicker and Dundalk well were well and truly stuck in the 2nd tier no matter what seemed to be thrown at promotion between managers and money - its is why when promotion was earned after so long that the (tongue in cheek!!!) DVD stuff is etched in to the soul. The Seanie season could have been won in September only for injury and Cork fell over the line in the end. So 6 oints from 12 sound great. I'm glad that includes Athlone which shoul be 3 points. But I wont relish having to go and win against UCD or Finn Harps, no bankers. I can see us having to go to Cobh needing a result to be sure of promotion. Yes the experienced heads could well have it done and dusted before Cobh but a young squad that havent experienced closing out a season is a little unsettling. The one thig about this side that is reminiscent of past Dundalk sides is that a setback has been followed up with a response. I dont think Im being a doom merchant, maybe a tad superstitious though, by not claiming promotion yet, i think its pragmatic to consider that we have put a bit of pressure on ourselves - lose to UCD and a bump in the road is a growing pothole! Its quite possible that by this time next week we'll have beaten UCD and promotion will then feel more like a formaility. I hope the pressure on Cobh is greater and that Bray put themselves in the picture.

Ahh here the thought of an away day in the Belfield bowl has ruined my Sunday. I really detest that ground.

It’s probably the least kippiest of this years First Division grounds
It’s clean, decent view for fans, decent food & drink outlets, and plenty of nearby parking.

Belfield is far and away my favorite away ground on the LOI.
nice view of the pitch, with a roof over one's head and polite people selling coffee and food to you when requested-If only some supposed big clubs would pull their finger out we could have a lot more like it in the league

He had one tonight where maybe he got the benefit if the doubt from the ref and got a free, but generally his handling on crosses is excellent.

We should have won tonight. Had the chances, Luke Turner in particular missed a sitter right at the death. Two point dropped. Special mention to the Galway players who were sitting behind the away dugout, a supremely annoying bunch. On their feet every couple of minutes screaming for decisions. They must learn it off Caulfield. Bit of handbags at the end too with some of the Pats supporters (Who really should have known better).

Players screaming for decisions! The horror!!

There is no doubt its a clean ground but Id find the lack of atmosphere can suck the life out of games.

The same can be said for about half the First Division grounds currently.

Everyone expects appeals for contentious decisions. These guys were leaping up apoplectic every five minutes. I just found it a bit annoying, that's all. Seems to have ruffled the Galway feathers though ;)

Feathers very much unruffled. Judging by some of the Pat's fans reactions both here and on Reddit, it would seem that the ruffling of feathers may be closer to the Camac River.

Well im hoping for 3 points tonight in Waterford to put the league virtualy to bed, 1 point in Cork wasnt great but losing in Waterford follwed by our 4th cup final loss of the year on Friday would make things a little to interesting with all the European matches coming thick and fast.
A win tonight and we are nearly there
Big match tonight between Drogs and Shels the loser falls a bit adrift of Europe places

Nothing less than 3 points will do for us tonight, anything less and it’s curtains, considering we still have to go to Cobh and Dundalk it’s all still a long shot anyway….

Sligo go ahead in Galway and drop Galway into the playoffs.

If Galway lose, it'd be a run of 3 points in 11 games. Is that the Ollie Horgan impact? Certainly it gives the First Division side something to play for. You can't take that sort of form into a playoff and be confident of staying up

Nesta99
22/09/2025, 8:38 PM
The loss of Horgan has to have had an impact emotionally and imo very much tactically. Whats impressive is the way that the Sligo board havent blinked on their coaching staff, they've flirted with relegation for 2 seasons and the vast majority if not all would have changed manager, supporters have satyed on board too. Its not done and dusted that theyre out of harm, but its more likely that Galways will have to chase Waterford on run in form.

Harps season over anyway. Another pathetic second half performance and yet again dropped points from a winning position. Must be 10 or 12 points dropped from winning positions this year.

Three free headers from corners is criminal defending.

About the best you can say about the game in Athlone is that Foley saved a retaken penalty twice, kept a clean sheet, and Kerry are guaranteed to finish ninth at worst, but the league is very much petering out into a damp squib, and looking much less likely to keep up with Longford now.

Thats that so. Good win in waterford.
Cup final for bohs on friday

Longford probably will finish 8th at least. They've been picking up good points in recent weeks.

A DVD won't save United this season I fear. Our form is in the toilet since Dyer got sent off in his last game for us. No league wins since.
While it seems unlikely Cork will catch us, an in-form First Division play off winner could beat us in the Playoff.

6 goals conceded this weekend...2 penos, 1 free kick, 1 header from a free kick, 2 headers from corners. Absolute joke. Season over again well before the final ball is kicked.

As comfortable a win as you will see. At the start of the second half Cork attempted to get into the game but our third goal put the game to bed. We played some nice stuff at times. Can only hope that they are in similar form for the cup semi final.

Been a couple of years since Pats have had a game as handy as tonight. Cork were a joke at the back, Redmond and Grivosti won countless headers from corners with ease. That Cork backline had absolutely no leadership or desire about them. Couto's first start since coming back from injury I think and he got roasted down the line by Simon Power tonight

Yeah Dyer was a monumental loss. Saw a stat the other day saying that aside from Dyer and Cian Byrne (who are both no longer at the club), no Galway United player has scored a league goal since February that didn’t come from the penalty spot. A fairly staggering stat

A stát which sounds like it should be true, but isn't.

Jimmy Keohane v Derry in August
Stephen Walsh and McGuinness v Waterford in July.
Bobby Burns v Shelbourne in June.

But yes Cian Byrne was immense for us and is missed almost as much as Dyer.

Its hard to credit we have lost 3 times to bohs and they are ten points behind in second. Thats a 22 points swing in the other matches. Be almost funny if we lost again of friday.

Id definitely have Waterford as the most likely to end up in the playoff. Their current form is dreadful. I’d interested to know what anyone more familiar with the first division thinks if any of the teams in the mix have the potential to win the playoff final.

NIIIGELLLL!!!

That stat is mad. In fear of being accused of being too....retrospective...the keep it mean away and go for it at home tendency catches up. The play-off looks a lot less daunting with Galway than Sligo for whomever gets there from the 1st division. Confdence shot, run off losses, goals hard to come by. Its real wheels falling off stuff and it didnt look like Galway would actually be sucked in that long ago, that there was just enough in the bank. Waterford are looking over the shoulder in a big way too, backs to the wall and Galway might just eek out a scrappy win and make it nervous.

I think its very possible but I would be putting money on it. Doesnt really answer much. Bray are a better side than Cobh imo, I dont like playing UCD ever. If Treaty do end up getting through well I dont think they'd manage much more than a good effort. Dundalk end up there, I think we'd compete, i feared Sligo a lot more, Waterford are due a play-off win but sure if we put Jeff McNamara sitting on the bench we'd be grand, just his presence. Galway away from ED Park Id back us.

Apologies, just double checked the stat, it’s away from home. Still a mad one!

Absolutely. Surprisingly comfortable to be honest. Don't know whether we were that good or Cork were that bad. I think they allowed us to play more than Galway did, and we were good enough to take full advantage. Mason Melia should have had a hat trick, if not four. Thought Kenny might have given him a few more minutes to see if he could get the his third, with it being his birthday and all.

Yup, looking at GD and it really is Waterford in trouble if Galway win at home to Cork which is a close to a must win as ye get. A lot depends on say Rovers having bagged the title/cup final and not too bothered about their game v Galway/Sligo, with European prep, party mode. European qualification makes games against 2-6th full war face on for them and Sligo have Derry, Pats, Shels. Its is too early to call much really. Will certainly be intriguing.

Good 3 points for Rovers tonight, should seal the title for yet another season.
Our inability to close out games convincingly needs to be addressed for our next big game coming up against Sparta Prague.
Look to be between Waterford and Galway for the playoff spot now, albeit id expect either to comfortably see off 1st division opposition

From what I've seen I wouldn't hold out much hope for any of them including us.
Based on games against ourselves Bray are a better team than Cobh, and we are just a tad better than both of them
