Certainly should have been a red card but Chapman has to score the chance that was cleared off the line. Decent game considering the state of the pitch. Hopefully weather gets better and it can improve. If we can beat Drogs on Saturday be a really decent first set of games for us. Look so much better then last season.

There was cover so it was definitely a yellow. We need to beat Galway before heading into the break.

I don’t think the calls for a red are even in relation to it being a goalscoring opportunity. I agree there was covering bodies and the touch was heavy, but in my opinion it should’ve been a red purely because he’s made no attempt to play the ball and has absolutely clattered Power in order to stop him getting to the ball

It's also because it's the keeper and they always have to be careful coming out of their areas.

2020-2023 Stephen Bradley
2019 Vinny Perth
2018 Stephen Kenny
2017 John Caulfield
2014-2016 Stephen Kenny

Galway United v Shamrock Rovers bringing two LoI winning managers head to head. Two clubs who have won the most league titles in the last 10 years currently 9th and 10th. Dundalk will need the other newly promoted side before heading into the break. Waterford will want at least a draw to not lose early season positivity.

Also same two clubs with the most LOI titles combined (35) lying 2nd last and last, and add in a recent LOI title winner from 2017 now in the FD and it makes even more bizarre reading.

"denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal by an offence punishable by a free kick" = straight red.

Well if there's covering defenders then that often means no clear goal-scoring chance. So a defender mightn't have been sent off - but is the definition of a goal-scoring chance changed if there's effectively no keeper? That's why I think a keeper foul outside the area might be different.

If he didn't have a scoring chance why did the keeper cleave him out of it?

The challenge alone, two footed with no attempt to play the ball is a straight red no matter what the context "Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."

Red twice over.

Clumsiness or incompetence would be suggestions for the former; it is the LoI after all

It wasn't a two-footed challenge so that quote isn't relevant. Looks like he came flying out, realised he wasn't going to get the ball, and just body-checked Power - possibly partly out of self-preservation. He hits him either srse or shoulder; I can't tell which from the replay

But I don't think a keeper can claim clumsiness when flying out of his box like that so I think it should have been a red.

What angle are you watching? It's hard to make out from the footage and I didn't make it to Sligo.

I think he does deny a goalscoring opportunity fwiw. Powers pace had him through. Tough angle with the two defenders there but it was certainly a chance. Maybe not by the letter of the law though. That said it doesn't look like a two footer at all. Not even close. Arse or shoulder made the contact. Unless you've a different replay?

Absolutely awful game so at least we have something to talk about I suppose. So many basic errors by both teams.

On chances Sligo probably deserved a win but we also had the only spell of dominance in the game during the second half so you could argue the other way too.

Note that Power is half way into orbit before a defender is level with him.

No surprise with DD gone. He looked devastated after final whistle. Interestin to see the return of Pat Fenlon and also Derek Pender too. Wonder does PF fancy the new position?

That certainly confirms it wasn't a two footer. It'd be fairly impossible for Pohls feet to have made any contact at all. Literally a tackle that went arseways.

Tough angle as well. By the time he got the shot off hed have been outside the box away to the right with two defenders in between him and the goal. With Powers finishing.....but you can't take a players quality (or pace) into account of course.

Still think it could have been a red but not because of the nature of the challenge.

Pender never went anywhere. Was on Devine's staff this season and TBH I'm of the opinion he should be shown the door as well. From what I can see he's the one whose been working with the defence for the last few years under Devine and Long before that and the defence has been consistently poor. No reason 1 coach should outlast 2 head coaches.
