It's a real story of opportunity, circumstance and opinions, last year his club brought a Brazilian in on loan in January for his position who had a great first game & was awful after that. Rodgers even said he was the missing piece & everything would be ok now after his debut. McAteer was on loan at Wimbledon at the time. Relegation, new manager, ex Man City assistant & he put him straight in the side & he has been flying so far. Fans player, exciting, has a trick & acceleration too. I was really hoping it'd be him & am delighted it is. Few England fans on big bigsoccer annoyed about this one, they hoped it'd be Roberts which tells a story too. Now get him capped.

Looks to be out injured for another four weeks so even if his paperwork is sorted he mightn't feature. If he's out for the full four weeks he'll be only just back in training a few days before the Dutch game.

Don't think the FA are gonna mind too much. He's 22 in November and never featured at underage for them.

Some England fans will always moan at dual nationals wanting to play for another country, but as said elsewhere they'll be the same fans who don't rate Jarrod Bowen.

Should hopefully get a couple of games with Leicester before the next internationals. Even if his paperwork isn't fully sorted you'd assume that he'd join up with the squad. Meet up with the lads even if it's gonna be Kenny's last international window as manager.

Wouldn't think the FAI are doing much chasing as I doubt they have the bandwidth but wouldn't be too surprised if Kenny knew about him. One of his few strengths has been finding players and coaches.

He has his goal... this time Kasey McAteer gets his header right when left unmarked in the middle of the goalmouth to meet a cross from Abdul Fatawu who did superbly down the right and then dinked the ball in with his left.

I'm watching it Stu and he didn't just miss a sitter at 0-0, he missed the target, free header, back post, had it in his eyeline a long time. He scored a sitter to make it 3-0 after Vardy had done the heavy lifting with two goals, which isn't quite the same. Had a decent hour plus overall though.

Also, he references his uncle being a proud Irishman so am assuming the grandfather, particularly marrying an Irish woman too, could have identified as Irish.

Could well be that he uses his mother's surname, or that his dad has an Irish one like McAteer and there's no connection there or it's a little far out to qualify.

Offaly born grandmother, Belfast born grandfather I think. Qualifies for us through both and for the north through the grandfather. Obviously if he's capped in either of these games he's tied to us.

Comes across a nice well spoken lad. Hes a welcome addition. I remember seeing him play a couple years ago before I knew there was any connection and he really stood out during the game. His name was noticeable too, but he kept popping up doing good things all through the game.

A friend of mine was on trial at Spurs when Gary Doherty and Stephen Kelly were at the club, back when he was an underage international.

Said Stephen Kelly was incredibly nice, went out of his way to be helpful and just made them feel really welcome and Gary Doherty was the exact opposite.

My friend, who’s father is Arabic and his mother is irish was on trial with another lad from his club who I’d say most on the forum would know of. There was an incident in digs with an Israeli kid who Spurs had signed kid for big money who they had been training with. He found out my friend was part Arabic and started insulting him and calling him names and saying things about Arabs in general. The other irish kid went straight up to him and punched him, which defused the situation.

They got sent home and Gary Doherty wrote a letter both to their club and to the FAI complaining about their behaviour, saying they had let everyone down and asking that they not be allowed go on trial again. He had a load of big trials lined up and was devastated by it.

Both players signed for premier league teams the following summer that they had already been on trial with but my friend felt very aggrieved about Gary Doherty being involved in it and was still bitter about it a decade later.

The club he ended up signing for were not a club he would have gone to - and he felt it wasn’t a great environment at the time but he had less options that he could have expected. He also felt that it soured relations in the FAI and he got a bad name for something he had very little to do with.

He got a serious knee injury in his last year at the academy and the club were having massive finance issues and they released him rather than paying for the knee operation he was supposed to get done in Colorado.

He ended up signing for a LoI club but for him and his family, it was a real sliding doors moment in their life, his teammate punching the Israeli kid and Gary Doherty escalating the situation.

Doherty's father was/is from Donegal and his mother was/is from Kerry. I think he may have been born in Donegal too.

Yes. The point George was making was that Doherty was very much Irish but didn't know the first thing about the place (even though he was born here). Doherty moved over as a kid. Evidenced by his strong Cockney accent. Big Irish head on him though

Another one I think we'd maybe be hearing a bit more hype about if he grew up in Ireland, but to be fair we haven't seen a huge amount of him since he declared for us. Definitely seems to have something about him though.

It's actually been a very decent Nations League for us in terms of expanding the squad, we've cap tied five players who had eligibility and realistic opportunities to play for other countries or international teams -

McAteer - was also eligible for the north
McGuinness - was eligible for the north
Szmodics - was eligible for Hungary
Azaz - was eligible for Israel
Cannon - was eligible for England Under 21 up until next year's Euros finals.

(We also cap-tied Jack Taylor against Greece but I don't think England were exactly banging down the door to get to him!)

Given we're in the Ireland forum talking about the Ireland team I would have said it was fairly clear what Irish meant. If I wanted to include players who played for the north I would have specified that.

On a similar note the team branding on FAI socials is interesting these days. You very rarely see the word Republic in use of late. A quick search on Twitter shows that the last use of "Republic of Ireland" in the text of an FA Ireland or Ireland Football account tweet was last year. Squad announcements are always issued as Ireland. It seems to be a conscious decision and is great to see.
