View Full Version : So farewell then...
Not sure at all but i think his brother is involved heavily in his agency so there’s probably some sort of succession plan there for the last while. Either way, you’d imagine this might cause a little/lot turmoil in the transfer market this off season!!

Dervla Murphy, completely mad travel writer (in the nicest possible way!) from Waterford, aged 90 (https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2022/0523/1300688-dervla-murphy/).
A Place Apart (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Place-Apart-Dervla-Murphy/dp/0140050302) is one of the best travel books I've ever read, about a spell cycling around the North in 1976. Comes with a post-script from the Head of the British Army at the time crediting the book with helping change his understanding of the North and, ultimately, getting the place on the path to peace.
That's rather ruined my day :(

The Andy Fletcher announcement today got me in the feels. Was a huge fan of DM and him in general.
DM’s Personal Jesus was also the answer to todays Heardle which is a very weird coincidence.

Uwe Seeler, former German international, aged 85.
In the late 70s, he was a guest player in a Cork Celtic match, a few years after his official retirement. Apparently, he wasn't aware that it was a league match and thought he'd signed up for a friendly. Scored two goals in that match.

David Warner, aged 80. One of those actors that you don't even realise how many things he pops up in, from the stage, to VA work in animation, to Star Trek (he was Picard's torturer in the famous "Chain of Command" two-parter, of "There are four lights!" fame), to Titanic. I was always struck by his voice, which had this very, well, evil quality to it. I remember the very first time I read The Hobbit I automatically imagined Smaug's dialogue in his voice.
David Trimble. A courageous leader at a time when courage was needed.

so she could have played for England, Wales, Germany, Israel or Australia. Impressive.

Born was a very serious physicist with contributions in quantum mechanics and optics. Born and Wolf is still a standard optics textbook.

He caused havoc in Russia that persists to this day, but it was the greed and/or stupidity of other people that are at fault, not Gorbachev.
I was lucky enough to visit Russia on a school tour in 1990, just before the collapse. It was an amazing country but socially it was exactly as it was portrayed in the media -- authoritarianism, drunks wandering the streets, queues for empty shops, rotten teeth, chancers everywhere, the whole shooting match. I'm not sure I'll ever get back, to see a "new Russia", which is very, very sad.

It's interesting for you to have seen the USSR in 1990. I think (predictably ) that things went a little far in the media yesterday, blue checks on Twitter lauding him for being a great man. Then Russian females of the era started talking about the half million of them basically sold into sex slavery under his rule. I keep seeing "He ended the cold war." Eh...those clowns completely ran out of money and had nothing to pay the KBG or Red Army officials and knew they would be getting a knock on the door soon. Many knocks. Doing the right thing had nothing to do with it. It did bring up some funny stories about Yelstin though, particularly the press conference where he is drunk and Clinton is trying to cover for him by laughing uproariously.

Think I read before that he suffered from anxiety from a young age, and drank to deal with it.
