Georgie Kelly on the bench for Rotherham today for just the second time since he arrived in January.

Should be noted they planned a debut in the EFL trophy at the start of last month, but he got injured a couple of days beforehand and is only coming back now

On for his debut today; last ten minutes away to Gillingham as they look to hold on to a 1-0 lead and earn automatic promotion.

In fact - he's just scored on his debut to make it 2-0 and confirm promotion.

Scored in a 4-2 win over Parkgate tonight. Only played the first half, so that's two goals in 55 minutes for Rotherham. OK, this was a pre-season friendly against a local non-league side where they put out a completely different side for the second half, so it's not quite the same as scoring the goal that settled promotion in May. But it'd be great if he got a run in the side now that he's over his initial injury; we're not exactly blessed with options up front and if he can score goals in the Championship, he'd have to be an option (weird and all as that sounds, having seen him play at the Bowl for three years!)

Nah!!!!
Sounds like Ogbene put in a good shift too.
FWIW, i am a Kelly skeptic. Absolute gem of a person and can hit the net when given chances but I truly think his ceiling will turn out to be in around League 1 as the other parts of his game (his touch and awareness in particular) are not to the standard required for a higher level from what I have seen.

The new Connor Sammon?
Only my opinion, but he's much better than Sammon was at any stage.

Sammon must have been the worst or one of the worst to get a competitive cap?

Thought he never really let us down in fairness. Bit like Daryl Horgan in that way maybe? Limited but with a great attitude which definitely helped.
There's others like Ronan Curtis, James Collins and even Will Keane who've struggled to make an impact lately. (I think that's a bit harsh on Keane and he may well be an option in the coming couple of years, but for now he probably counts)

What was the name of the guy who was capped after playing college soccer in the US - Joey Lapira?
Eirambler
25/07/2022, 9:10 PM
Lapira definitely the worst to be capped for us in the modern era given that he never played at any professional level of note - the Norwegian second division was as far as he went.
Joe O'Cearuill may be our worst multi-cap international given that he won two. Only played a handful of games in League 1, 2 and the LoI in his club career.
But neither of those won a competitive cap. I'd maybe nominate Alan O'Brien as the poorest player to win a competitive cap, I think Staunton capped him in a few qualifiers, he was fast but otherwise hopeless.
Worst player to play for us in a finals tournament? Obviously the standard of player is higher here. Maybe Paul Green or Simon Cox?

Id say Paul Green yeah

Have a sneaky suspicion Georgie Kelly could become a really unlikely success story for Ireland in the coming year or two.
He's a big fella, good hold up play, a good finisher, and good option from set pieces. What he lacks is a burst of pace, but with Ireland style of play, won't exactly be required to burst at defences on the counter where the likes of Parrott, Obafemi and co will have that area covered.

He seems to be banging them in
The real deal will be when the season starts. If he scores routinely at championship level with a newly promoted team then we will know

He’s not quick by any stretch but he’s faster than he looks, he’s not a Conor Salmon or a Patrick Hoban or a James Collins

Caleb Folan was a bit ****, but he did get an assist for Robbie's goal against Italy. Lapira the worst of all time and Green the most limited player ever to be a regular starter.

On the bench for the season opener against Swansea today, but apparently that's because he was ill during the week.
So the mystery of if he's actually any good or not will have to last another week.

Meanwhile, Ogbene gets the opener.
Meanwhile, Ogbene gets the opener.
Going by twitter he's having a good game. Almost scored an overhead kick only for the keeper to pull off a good save ten minutes after scoring, and early in the second half denied again by a finger tip save.

First goal in six appearances, but all off the bench so it's not far off a goal every 90 minutes actually

Second of the season just now. That's three goals in 150 minutes for the club (counting the promotion-confirming one). With Parrott out injured, Kelly may well be worth a look in the November friendlies.

much better options out there than gkelly. god only knows with kenny though given he gave scales a call up last time.

15/10/2022, 1:32 PM
Much better?
Parrott took about 25 games to get off the mark in the second tier. Maguire has scored 12 goals in the last 4 and a bit seasons. Adam Idah is injured and barely knows where the goal is anyway. James Collins has struggled at international level and has now dropped down to the third tier. Hamilton is coming on for 5-10 minutes in games which isn't ideal. Hogan and Keane are doing well (5 apiece so far this season) but also haven't reproduced that at international level, though they're the kind of players I'd like to see given an option in November. Ogbene and Obafemi we know about at this stage, though you'd expect one or other to be involved too, which is fine.
You can say Kelly's limited for sure, but I think our problems up front are so fundamental that we can't really ignore someone with three goals in 150 minutes for his club.

will keane is a lot better thats for sure and can fulfil more roles up top than kelly. parrott and kelly arent really similar so not much a comparison there. kelly is far too limited to international level football in my view. we'll be in desperate shape if hes ever considered to be a viable option.

We are in desperate shape though.
We've had plenty of third tier players in the squad of late (granted, our results have reflected that at times), so someone who can score in the second tier has to be considered I think. And I'm not sure we have a real poacher in the squad, so you can say he's different to Parrott, but that may be all the more reason to consider him.

Good to see him doing so well. Is quickly becoming something of a cult favourite among the Rotherham support by the looks of it.

Once again, who are the options to replace Parrott?
Evan Ferguson
Will Keane
Shane Long
Georgie Kelly
Aaron Connolly
Seanie Maguire
Is there anyone in Scotland? Is Aidan Keena the best LOI option?
Can certainly see how if that?s the list, Kelly is very much in the conversation. Ferguson is the future but he?s not ready yet. Will Keane didn?t look good enough in March. Connolly has a lot of growing up to do. Shane Long is 35. Then you?ve got Georgie Kelly and you?ve got Keena who has proven it much less than Kelly has.
You?ve also got Seanie Maguire who I initially forgot. Terrible luck with injuries. Good player whenever I?ve seen him play. Links up well as a second striker. Goals have totally dried up though.

Starts tonight anyway, away to Stoke.
Three minutes in he was denied a tap-in by a last ditch tackle. Don't know too what extent he could/should have scored, but Rotherham scored the corner anyway, so maybe split the difference and call it an assist?
