Actually, I don't believe in was an elbow. It appeared to me as a bit of a "coming together".
Ah, it looked an elbow now alright.
Using your logic, Shels #15 should have been off, having attempted to con the ref on two separate occasions.
Should have been booked after one and he wouldn't have done it again. In any case, that would've made it 8 on 10.
On the subject of conning the ref, McCallion dived to get Stuart Byrne booked in the first half as well.
On the game, I think the two teams' playing styles were evident, match fitness or no. Shels created most of their chances by taking the ball down and playing it around, while Glens largely hoofed up the pitch. I think that even in mid-season for both teams (which for now can only be purely hypothetical), Shels would win. And they're currently supposed to be going through a bad spell.
Incidentally, I find it ironic how you'll all slag Shels fans for being arrogant (especially on ilf.net, but here to an extent also), but now after you've been played off the park, there's a fair bit of bad losership being posted... Glens' first corner came with ten minutes to go, they had no shots no goal until the scored (with 13 minutes to go) and had their keeper and the ref to thank for keeping them in the game. There's only so much summer soccer can be responsible for, I'm afraid...

Thought Shels were comfortable and whether it was due to fitness or being better footballers the fact is they were far superior to Glens. The Glens goal was a very soft one to give away and if Shels hadn't tried to walk the ball in theywould have come away fairly comfortable winners. The tie is still alive but on the basis of last night's match Shels should be checking out accommodation in Bucharest.
As for the dirt of the Glens - thought they were very prone to jumping and tackling with elbows up. The lad should have walked for the penalty.
By the way, hand ball is not a yellow card offence. Hoolihan was booked for unsporting behaviour (he handled it to stop a quick counter attack). The Glens lad handled it to bring it under control, that's just a free kick.

Shels were definitely the better team. Wes Hoolahan was my MOTM, I thought he played really well the whole game and he even defended well towards the end. Elliott Morris was Glens best player, he kept them in the tie.
I think Shels will win return leg.
Now people can't complain about Jayo's European record.... :D

The ref was Greek what can you expect?
Why is his nationality relevant?

By the way can any Glens fan give us an estimate of the crowd? How many Shels lads went up for this one?

The Shels stand looked like it was only half full.

yeah i know, but id say that was "shels stand" with no glentoran fans allowed in.

That stand holds about 2,000 and was only allowed for Shels fans, of which there were about 450.

Nope. Nothing. At all. Not even a dead rat.

Yes, sorry about the lack of eating facilities there. Typical Glentoran amateurism.
Regarding the next leg- d'you know something? I think it's great that we're being written off. It just takes the pressure off us, and it also means that you boys might just get a wee shock next Wednesday night. I'll be there, and I'm looking forward to it.

Hmmm...interesting take. To be honest (and I can't really remember the exact details now), my impression at the time was that he stuck out his hand to control the ball. I think also that, had he not done that, the ball would have gone past him to a Shels player, in which case, it falls under your first heading and he should've walked. Though as I say, I can't remember the incident that well now.
Well done Shels, great result for the League.

Forza, you are completely deluded. Shels completely played you off the park and you were incredibly lucky not to have lost 3 or 4 nil. Saying otherwise is just a lie.

Interesting... Parkhouse should have been red carded and McCallion acting up... what's the connection? Both ex Derry City players.... :D

Maybe so ... but anything can happen in fairness, Shels will have to be on top form.

No denying that, it's still all to play for, but Shels need to go out to attempt to win the match in Tolka.
Well done on the result today btw :ball:

The truth's in the middle. Shels are a better side, the European results of the last years prove that, but I do get the Glens' fans point. With equal fitness the gap would have been closer. Like Slash/ED says, the IFA should consider summer football as well.
BTW, I don't think we'll see Steve Williams under the bar again soon... Dean Delaney had almost nothing to do, but then a few minutes before time a header from close range right in the cross, and he managed to save it... BRILLIANT !! I don't think Fenlon will take Delaney out again in the near future, he's getting better and more confident every week. Not to mention the strikes he can start up with his drop kicks.

Delaney has been incredible. He is so solid and safe, quick off his line, commanding and a good shot stopper too. Terrible for Williams though he was off form this season.

Yeah, and saying he lost his place in... a League Cup game vs Kildare...
But fair is fair, it would be absolutely injustice to Delaney to take him out of the team now. Like he's playing now, he's by far the best gk in the Eircom League (sorry Cork...)

Yeah, and also, we know if there's an injury we have as good a number two as anyone around who can come in.

How quickly you forget David Forde's performance against you (twice), which has basically been the way he has played all season.
Fordey, Fordey!!!!!!
An article in the sun today proclaimed Forde the best keeper in the league. Been fantastic anytime I've seen him. But I've seen more of Deano ;) :D
Slash/ED

To be fair, we should wait a few months before calling Deano the best.

He did stick out his hand to control the ball. If he didn't it wouldn't have been deliberate and therefore not even a free. But the context of the two incidents were different. Hoolihan's was more cynical - it was killing an attacking move - unsporting conduct. With the Glens lad, just because it was rolling to a Shels player doesn't matter. Shels weren't attacking or gain significantly from the ball coming to their player so it is handball but not unsporting behaviour.

Mmm...I dunno. Sticking out your hand to control the ball when it's going to an opposition player can only be to gain an advantage surely? I think he was about 10 or 15 yards outside his own penalty area - around that area, you'd have to consider an attack possible, unlike, say, the opposition penalty area?
Anyway, doesn't matter now - he wasn't sent off and Shels still won.

Actually, I don't believe in was an elbow. It appeared to me as a bit of a "coming together". There didn't appear to be anything violent, and if I know the incident to which you're referring, that was Parkhouse. He's a big lad, who is quite big and strong, but he's a bit clumsy when challenging for balls in the air. He's not dirty, by any stretch of the imagination.
it was clear on the replay that he looked at yer man and then jabbed an elbow at his face. you can blame fitness and luck for looking like an amateur side for 83 minutes of a game but it was NOT a "coming together"

Must admit, from all visiting teams Forde was by far the best goalkeeper. We had won the latest confrontation at Tolka if it wasn't for him saving at least 3 balls in an incredible way...
Devine and O'Brien were also quite good, though I'd say Forde is the best I've seen this season. Quigley's a big promise for the near future.
