Just something that crossed my mind. Maybe its been asked before but - Do many people on here get newspapers on a regular basis? If so, which one do you rate highest? Do you have a different preference depending on the day?

For me on the most part it would be the Indo. Cant go wrong with it imo. Although I like the Star's junior soccer coverage. On a Saturday I might edge ever so slightly towards the star and on Sunday's its back to the Sunday Indo.

Rarely buy a paper, especially during the summer when there's other things to be doing. Winter I get the Turbine.

Brought The Village for the first time last week, and have to say I'll be getting it again. Alot of Vincent Browne's personal opinion, but at least he's not afraid to put it up to anyone. Look at the coverage that kid's death in custody has got since he published - too many of the other papers in the pockets of the police and politicians...

Also started buying the pheonix again, and actually tempted to get a subscription to make sure I get hold of a copy.

Normally get the Longford Leader too, if I think of it pre-lunch on a Friday (all gone by 2)

hate the sunday indo full of pr1cks like brendan o connor and dion fanning
, o connor comes across as the smuggest man alive when writing his articles . he had one laying into the mc cauls after eurovision which was highly unfair and they were an easy target. also they seem to have an agenda with eamonn dunphy where all their journos are encouraged to have sly digs at him at every opportunity. all very middle class and self satisfied. eammonn sweeney is a good writer for them though even though he wasnt exactly pro gah in "theres only one red army" and now is writing about gah.

Normally buy the Star simply because it's the best of a bad bunch IMO. Have never bought the Sun since their shocking Hillsboro claims.

The Daily Record over here is so bad it's funny. Constant innacurate information and plenty of pictures with the wrong name next to it.

Read the indo online most days
Rarely pick up a tabloid, not the Sun because of the Hillsboro, and I can't see myself buying the Star after they ripped the pics off thepeoplesflag.com

I remember that so well, they ran a special over two days called "The Lorenzo Amoruso story" which came with a comical poster of Amoruso in a kilt suit. Most the Rangers fans I lived with slagged it more than the rest of us because it was more biased in their favour than Archie McPherson. I think the Mirror group own it.

We get the Indo & IT daily at work so usually have glance though them.

Sometimes buy IT on saturday.

Buy sunday paper every 2-3 weeks. Rotated between Tribune, Observer & Sunday Times.

I don't like the Indo & would never ever buy the Sindo.

We get the Irish Times at home and in work, though I actually prefer to get the Examiner since it included its Rest of Ireland supplement...

I never buy papers myself, just magazines like Zoo.

However, I do read papers. I never read NOTW because of their anti-Chelsea propaganda, even in the Irish version. My mother buys the Irish Times every Saturday and I usually take the Sports Section and feck off for the weekend.

Irish Examiner, when I can get a copy.
Sunday Business Post, on Sundays, obviously.

The Sun over here almost always has the eL results, which is handy if you're stuck. A quick read in the shop will do, you don't need to buy it. ;)

Does anyone remember the Sunday Pink? I havent seen it in years - is it still on the go?

Used to get it off a guy outside mass every sunday.

Rarely buy, but if I do it's the Irish Times or the Examiner, depending on my mood. I've been known to buy the Guardian when I'm feeling particularly liberal.

Aye - their eL coverage is by far the best of any broadsheet, and arguably better than the tabloids too.

The Daily Telegraph :o (for sport rather than the politics I hasten to add) and the Sunday Independent (although Fanning is on my pet aversions list).

Never read or buy a tabloid. In work people get the Times and the Indo to the desk so I read bits of both. The Ticket always gets a reading on Friday. On a Sunday if I am in the shop I will either buy the Tribune, Sunday Business Post or the Indeo. I don't really rate the Independent too highly or the Post. Usually i read online news, selecting articles from all papers and news sites.

How do people feel about local newspapers? Good read or just a gossip rag?

broadsheets are all right wing rags. tabloids are jsut rubbosh-any newspaper that consider big brother or celbrity love island as "news" is as bad a sthe comical us paper the national enquirer.
i dont like ANY irish paper.they all have some agenda.
the only one i would be intersted in is Daily Ireland-yes i know it has a nationalist left-wing agenda, but its bluntly honest about it,and theres nothing wrong with that view either

The guardian is good but takes an eternity to get through. Hate the other Brit paper especially the vile Express and Mail. Irish News proabably the best for sport with the Derry Journal a must for City news.

How do people feel about local newspapers?

I'll usually have a quick read of the Southern Star when I'm at home.
Other than that, I suppose you could say the Evening Echo is as local as it gets.

The Irish Post is a quality paper for the Irish in Britain, I always get it.

Saw that on the shelves of my local newsagents in the village.
Asked my friendly newsagent if he sold many and he said, "yeah, loads!"
I was shocked!
I thought I was the only Paddy in the village. :D

He asked if I wanted a copy but I declined, stating that I didn't need to buy it because I'm "proper Irish." :D

The Examiner would be my paper of choice but I get The Star a fair bit too especially on a Monday or around an international match and usually glance through the Indo and The Guardian on the net.

On Sundays its usually The Tribune or The Times. The Star on Sunday is the biggest heap of crap ever.

All newspapers that report NEWS have their own agenda or angle. UK papers are worse than irish.

Tabloids are only good for some sports & the pictures.

The Evening echo in Cork is shockingly bad. I got it last time in Cork & was just pictures of people at festivals & some sort of school outing. I'd finished "reading" it in 10 minutes.

Agree with all the above. I buy the Guardian most days, I have to as i study Poltics, and they provide the clearest acounts IMO.

Tabloids=shíte.

The Guardian every day and Observer on Sundays. If Uk Independent is available I get that too but it's hard to get/delievery is poor even when ordered. The Star if there's a big Irish match on and on Tuesday for junior/schoolboy footie.

Can't stand most Irish papers. Last Sunday's sports pages in Turbine had five or six pages to start with on eggball, then pages on Gaa, then golf, then more eggball - and that's from just a glance in the shop!!!

I wonder if they've heard of football in Faggot Street. :D

I gets the Irish Times (even though I hate that Unionist b0ll0x Kevin Myers with a passion) and the Star for eL coverage. I also take a peek for the Waterford News & Star for the latest on the Blues.

When I was in England, it was the Morning Star for me. ;)

I buy the Sun nearly every day, simply because it has the best coverage of the eircom League. I also read the Irish Times most days. At weekends I usually get the Sunday World, cos its easy to read at work- nothing too taxing on the brain!- but nearly always read the Tribune as well. Like to read the Phoenix as well, and read the Guardian and the Examiner the odd time. Usually get the Echo the day after a city game as well.

The Irish Times - every day - excellent paper, and ok for eL news. Last week I started playing Sudoku :D !

Others:
The Irish Examiner - good for 'outside Dublin' stuff, eL stuff is quite good.
The Financial Times - A wonderfully serious newspaper, and very good for European news.
Le Monde (I speak French!) - Also a serious paper, but sometimes it can be a heavy read.
Others that I get occasionally - Irish News (for northern news), Lá (in a desperate attempt to imporve my Irish!), The Guardian (though sometimes I think that its a bit too red), The Washington Post and the New York Times (both on the internet).

Actually, there's at least one turbine journalist who's an eL fan, he just doesn't work in the Sports section.....

The Mirror and the Sun are rags but the Star isn't?
The Star has some of the best Irish Journalists working for it and breaks a lot of important stories, if you can overlook the celebrity crap.

It seems (not 100% sure that it is), that the Star is an Irish paper that syndicates a lot of the celebrity stuff, whereas imo the Irish Mirror and Irish Sun are the UK papers with a few token Irish stories to justify the name. Well that's my read on it anyway...

Is that the the Dermot whatsisname who wrote he was involved in footie administration in the past??? Yeah, I remember posting something to that effect ages ago. Doesn't say much for the sports section, does it.

My favourites would be the Echo (for the coverage of local games)especially on mondays.
the examiner is good also
the irish times have great writers working for them.love the planet football they have on mondays during the season.
