Untrue, or at least only half true, unless you're talking about Smashey FM or some similar slave to the so-called 'realities' of the market.
No media organization worth its salt can neglect its public service function. Even in the unlikely event of the IT and the Indo etc. admitting that their sole aim in life is to sell newspapers, RTE can't say all they want to to is maximise audience. It's a public service broadcaster, or is supposed to be. That's why we pay a TV licence, and why it's ironic that Setanta and TV3 do more, however paltry their efforts, to promote domestic football.
