Thanks for all these replies guys (even though copying all those addresses in my collection's files is long work :) )

I may try to catch a game of the deaf club, as I said I studied for translator for the Deaf and Blind so I am highly interested. Are they the only Deaf club on the island of Ireland (Republic and North) ?

Also, are all those amateur leagues related to the FAI ?? I mean, is it like a team becoming champions of the LFL promotes to the LSL and so on, and that all clubs affiliated to those amateur leagues can enrole in the FAI Cup ??

In Belgium we also have several districts that have leagues for companies' teams. In my native region for example the Police have a team, the University staff do, Samsonite has a team, Volvo has, ... I don't know if such thing exists in Ireland, though if it does it could be interesting as me and a colleague are trying to form a team for the company where we work.

No gay teams in Ireland like that one in England BTW ?? In my native country there's only one such team, being an all-lesbian team in the lower divisions of the women football leagues.

lfl,usl,afl and lsl are all different separate leagues.for example if you finish top of LFL you dont move up to LSL

afaik there are strict rules regarding amateur teams qualifying for FAI cup.i think you have to be in one of the leinster/munster.connacht&ulster senior leagues or an intermediate club.but if you play in the FAI intermediate cup , you cant play in the proper FAI cup. but im open to correction here.

Yes you are right there was a Jewish club called Dublin Maccabi. They played in The Maccabi grounds on the KCR Road. The reason the club disbanded was due to fallout over money for the facilities in the KCR. The grounds were brilliant & were shared with a number of intermediate teams, however the prices kept rising every year and Maccabi could not afford to pay the new fees. In 1995 the club broke ties with Dublin Maccabi and set up Parkvale Football Club.

Parkvales’ president Adam Berber is an active member in the Jewish community and there are still some Jewish players, the club is not however considered Jewish anymore.
Parkvale have two senior teams playing in the LSL Major 1 Sunday & Premier 1 Saturday. They also have an academy and under 8’s to under 11’s.

Since 1995 the first team has been promoted 6 times in 10 years, been to the Amateur Cup Final, winners LSL Premier and runners a number of times. The Saturday team just gained promotion to LSL Premier Sat this year finishing 2nd to Lissadel.

The club has about 100 junior and senior signed players and currently plays in the VEC ground in Terenure, 5 minutes from the Old Dublin Maccabi grounds which Ben Dunne has turned into a GYM.

Does Parkvale get Jewish support ? Maybe the Jewish community in Dublin still sees them as 'their' club ?

No not really Gerrit, I think the association died when the ties with Dublin Maccabi was broken. Also Parkvale moved to LSL about three years after the break so the majority of teams who would remember play in the Guinness Amateur League.

The team has changed a lot since then. When it was Maccabi there were strict rules. You had to be Jewish to play. I don't think that there is anybody left in the Parkvale 1st team that played for Maccabi (some play saturdays) Most of the quotes before were right they weren't up to much but now with new coaches and management they are going for a new younger team hoping to play intermediate in the next 3/4 years. This season was their first year together after a lot of influential retirements so management have adopted a policy of youth.

Sorry it was a bit long winded but to sum up I would not say that Parkvale is not a Jewish club but it does not discriminate against any. (hope that is politically correct and i don't offend anyone!)

The ground also had a huge club house, tennis courts,cricket pitch,and rugby pitch.
I believe it closed down in the ninties due to the Jewish community dwindling in Ireland.

Samba Celtic, a Brazilian side play in the lower divisions of the Galway & District League. They're based in Gort, the Rio of south Galway.

Killtullagh Pioneers play in Division 2a of the same league. They were a Premier Division side until a couple of years ago. They're anything but Pioneers hence their slide but they were at one point in the past...

When I played in Dublin, a few seasons ago, we played against an Italian side, Del Pino, based around the Parliament St. restaurant of the same name. Not sure if they're still going. Churches League I think.

Probably the best name I've heard in recent years in the Ballyvarry Blue Bombers who play in the Mayo League. All from Mayo I presume. :D

Dublin has several immigrant sides of Italian origin. In the Tallaght suburbs there's an Italian team playing in the Wicklow Mountains AFAIK.

I haven't come across any foreign-sounding clubname here in Belfast, despite the fact that we have a Polish community and quite some Indian people. And apparently some Arabs as well, as there's a Mosque quite close to my place...

I haven't seen any foreign-sounding clubname in any Northern Irish amateur league table. One club is named Samba, but apparently those are just Belfast-based amateurs who named their club like that.



The 5-a-side league of Tallaght's AstroPark had some pretty weird named clubs: Premature Ejaculators, Wacko Jacko's Victims, Wednesday Wanderers, Mammy's Boys, Sheepshaggers (must be some Donegal folks living in Dublin), Toilet Ducks, Jamaican Bob Slay Team, ...
Not sure if all of these are still active, they used to play in the league back when I lived in Dublin (I played football with the colleagues at AstroPark)

Hi yes the Club existed,they played in the Amatuer League which is now the Leinster League.It was call Carlisle before that and the name was changed when the opened the new ground on Kimmage road.The ground was one of the best fields around and the Irish team trained there,with so many people overseas they felt the need to sell the ground and its a fitness centre now.
We had some great matches up there against Pioneeers Black Friars Juventus and Pegusus to name a few.
I would love to chat with anybody out there that played on those teams.My last game was in September 1965 when I went to Canada my brother Alan was also a member of Home Farm and tried out for Shelbourne and he still lives in Dublin.The Team still exsist I believe its called Park something? and could be in the Leinster League.The difference being the are only non Jewish boys playing where at my time we only had a player Coach who was the late Dessie Duffy.

I was quite surprised hearing this, cause I never ever heard of it. Not impossible though, maybe they used to have their own club in the amateur leagues (Leinster Senior League i suppose ?)

In my native Belgium teams for minority groups are not uncommon at all.

Cities such as Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp have a great number of Turkish and Moroccon immigrants, whereas the Liege region has many Spanish natives. If you go through the tables of Belgian amateur level football, you will see names such as Turkish Rangers, Istanbul Brussels, Furia Espanola, Turkish FC, Croatia Wandre, Diyanet Zaventem, Armenia Brussels, Avrasya Ghent, ...
There are two clubs of Jewish origin: Maccabi Brussels and Maccabi Antwerp.

Also there is a Turkish club in the Dutch top division of amateur football, the German fourth division has Turkiyemspor Berlin, and in Vienna there are several immigrant teams. In the US there's the rather famous Croatia SC in an amateur league somewhere in the central states.

I personally think teams like this are great, most of them are not strictly Jewish/Turkish/Spanish/whatever so they are great effords to bring people from foreign origins/cultures and local population together. Some of these clubs have gotten special awards for their work towards integration of foreigners, I think personally multicultural organisations such as these specific soccer clubs are the best way to fight racism.

Belgium also has several clubs for the Hearing Impaired (I used to go to some of these games) but the league is struggling as only a handful of clubs have enough players. Most clubs switched to indoor football as they couldn't find enough people for an outdoor team :([/quote]

Thanks for the info Geoff, the (successful) cricket club was still known as Carlisle up until its demise in the mid-nineties. The Molins family were at the heart of the cricket club and Jason Molins captained Ireland's national team until just before the last World Cup (his replacement Trent Johnston was an overseas pro at Carlisle in their final years.) Indeed, Jason scored 55 for an Israel XI against India A recently in a match to commemorate the country's 60th anniversary. It's a shame the Jewish community in Dublin can't sustain sports clubs anymore.

I'm sure I said it elsewhere in this thread, but I used to live in the houses alongside the pitch and putt club that was the otherside of the perimeter wall and that was one of the best pitches around. Glenmore ruled the roost at the time and they played superb football at the time, this was their home pitch.

It is sad that its now become a gym it was a fine big area but times change I suppose. :(

I remember as a young whipper snapper fresh out of schoolboy football, first season playing grown up footbll. We were playing Maccabi. After a comfortable win we adjourned to the bar. Being the youngest there I was despatched to the bar to ask for some Ham sambos. My older teammates were in fits of laughter. I still cringe at the thought of it. Not a very politically correct story but a true one. That was the nearest thing we had to multi-culturalism in those distant days.

Hi the Ground is still there but its a fitness centre I am not sure if some one by the name of Dunne owns it.My Nephews Adam and Leon Ellison both played for Carlisle as the Cricket Club was know one of them played for Ireland and also the Soccer Club.They also had a Rugby team and a Boxing Club in 1953 as I boxed there,my trainer was the famous Jimmy Ingle whose brother Brenden managed Prince Naseem,they live in Luton Jimmy must be in his late 80 as I was 12 at the time.
I coach Soccer here in Canada and was involved with the 1976 Canada Boxing Ass.My friend Walter Henry famous Iris and Canadian champ lives here too.
