Really looking forward to tomorrow night away match in Waterford. Big Rovers crowd traveling, allocation sold out, what will this season bring, tbh nothing would surprise me with Rovers, Mid table mediocrity, euro places battle or even vying for the title. Home games will be different with potentially two singing sections us aul fella's in the west and the Ultra's in the new.

Should be a big Harps crowd in Dalymount too. First time I'll miss first game of the season in about ten years though, and I'm gutted.
Hard to know how Harps will get on, don't think Ollie has gone full strength in any pre-season game, and keeps his cards close to his chest right up to kickoff tomorrow night.
Hopeful we can get a decent result. Need to start strongly and not end up chasing teams from the first few weeks.

Great to be back and really looking forward to going to Oriel this evening.
Matches at Richmond and RSC should also be fascinating. I suspect neither the demise of Cork or the rise of Pats will be apparent tonight, while Shams should be way too strong for a Waterford team feeling their way.

Cork will beat us.... which would be so Pats. We'll get up and running then.

I've got the same feeling. Think we'll gather momentum over the course of the season but can see the usual story against Cork tonight where we all say we were the better side but end up dropping a 1-0 or something.

jazus lads, even for LOI fans such pessimism is impressive :D usually 2/3 matches before reality kicks in, that's why we love opening night so much !

I'd definitely take a repeat of the first game last year! Without the sending off ideally.

It will be telly for me sadly, too far away from fixtures tonight. It will be interesting to see what Sligo are like under Buckley, as this is a genuine test for him. Great to have the league back. Shamrock Rovers could be interesting this year.

Excited to finally watch Dundalk again. I'm cautiously optimistic about the new coaching setup. I'll be keeping an eye on the pats v Cork game though, good chance for Pats to show any potential title credentials they have (which I don't think they do have personally)

How has the Sligo keeper not been sent off here?

Does the double punishment rule come into it? Penalty and a yellow rather than a red? Is that even a rule?
Looks like a break for Benson. Nightmare of a start.

Only a rule if the player made a genuine attempt for the all, which seems a stretch

Oh that could well be it - although he wasn't booked either I think.
I thought he did what he did considering the awful defending

I think the ref just forgot with the treatment taking so long. Definitely worthy of a yellow at least.

He was talking to the linesman through his mic - maybe clarifying the rule? - and had the Dundalk players talking to him as well; I'd be amazed if he forgot.
Derry v UCD commentary here (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/live:bbc_radio_foyle) by the way. Sounds like we're doing ok. Haven't lost in Derry in five games going back to 2011!
Waterford get the first goal; Rovers drop into the relegation zone.

I thought when they cut back from the first replay it looked like ref was walking back from keeper and putting card back in his pocket.
Overall not a great game so far. Pretty scrappy, seems to be the story of the night so far, cagey all around and no goals.

Fairy nuff. No graphic, and the commentators mentioned no yellow - but then Fenlon did think it was Duffy who'd been injured, so he probably wasn't paying too much attention.
Nothing on extratime (http://www.extratime.ie/matches/detail/35625/1/) either about a yellow

Sounds like the exact opposite of this so far. I'm not there but apparently we've had 3 fantastic chances and are well on top... 1-0 down. Hard to know going on twitter etc.

1-0 in all games now. Sligo the only away team to be leading. Poor stuff from Rogers.

Gary Rogers beaten by a free kick for the second week in a row. Clearly past it.

What awful goalkeeping from Rogers. Dundalk should be 4 nil up. Missed Penalty. Benson potentially out for a while. Is it going to be one of those nights?

Rovers dominate the whole half and go in one down ...wouldn't rule out a comeback but it's a strange game.

Remarkably patronising commentary on Radio Foyle. They reckon Collie O'Neill will be the happier of the two managers with us 1-0 down against a relegation rival, and in general far more dismissive of UCD than you'd think healthy for a team that was eighth last season and has nine debutants on the pitch.
Reminds me of our Cup quarter final win in 2007, when Liam Coyle reckoned Derry just needed an early goal and another one after that and they'd win easily. And they lost 1-0.
(Yes, it's a long time ago; I don't listen to Radio Foyle that often!)

Dundalk would be really good if they had a real striker. This Hoban lad isn't up to much...
I could probably say similar about Cork City tonight going on the number of reported chances missed.

Only caught the trackchamp stream from Dalymount tonight. Harps didn't seem to offer enough in the final third, which is worrying going forward, especially against someone deemed a relegation rival. Couple of big saves for Burke in goal too, to keep the score 1-0.
Long season ahead, but could have started a lot better. Dundalk next week should be interesting in Finn Park.

Will elaborate later on why we'll win the league but honestly if I was a Cork fan I'd be very frustrated by the way the go about playing. Or at least the way they did tonight.
Tonight was tight, on the balance of play we may have edged outside of the last 20 or so where we sat and were content with the 1-0, but that was aided by Cork having no plan outside of playing for set pieces. They had the better chances but they were all as a result of corners and largely in the first half. When they were forced to chase the game they looked terribly one dimensional and didn't create anything at all, nor change anything up outside of bringing more strikers on to play it long to.

Also not indicative of all Cork fans but was an absolute embarrassment that they caused trouble to the point McDowells had to close earlier. Throwing bottles about with elderly people, women and children there made the whole vibe quite sour. Hopefully the few involved get caught and dealt with.

Hopefully they don't just show the goals in 5 or 6 second clips all season long. A 2 or 3 min highlight section couldn't be that difficult to fit in? Maybe they're concentrating on getting manager interviews in instead.

Poor enough game at Dalymount. Breeze and bumpy pitch didn’t help but both sides looked nervy. Bohs did enough to deserve points but second half was atrocious stuff from both. Harps solid enough but lacked anything going forward. Cretaro provided any imagination but was lucky not to have been sent off (second yellow) just before he was subbed.
Good 3 points but a forgettable game.

Needs more time to put that package together? It's bad enough waiting this long with Collins waffling on about whether it's time (after ONE f**king game) for teams to panic.

It's believed that Benson's broken his leg, 5 minutes into the season, gutted for him. On the bright side we have Murray to come in, who looked promising tonight.

There were a few tackles worthy of straight reds in Oriel for sure, on Shields and McEleney mainly but even a few others could have shaded a second yellow. Sligo have an edge that you dont associate with a Buckley side. The will pick up points especially at home if they graft in defence like they did tonight though with a little more composure and luck Dundalk would have taken the 3 points.
What happened at Pats to find over 3000 people to get to go to a game?

Bohs/Harps was a poor quality affair, Bohs did enough after their goal to deserve the win, it's going to be a very long season for Harps they still looked like a First Division team tonight

Just like after last year's opening night draw with Bray, we have no chance of winning the league...

just in from the windy south east, Rovers deserved winners in the end with a good 2nd half performance. Actually playing into the strong wind seemed to suit Rovers as the ball held up nicely for our lads to get onto the diagonal ball played down the side. Carr had a mare in the first half with Eathan Boyle also struggling, thought Finn did well he seemed to get forward a lot more that a lot of games last Season. We did miss a lot of chances though. Fantastic support there tonight looked more than our allocation of 700. A game we would have got little from last season.
