I spent nearly a year living in Bulgaria (Aug 2003 - Jun 2004) I was on the ERASMUS program ok but I had an absolute ball. So cheap there as well. I lived in the south western provincial town of Blagoevgrad about 60 miles south of Sofia. Sofia itself is a lively spot with surprisingly plenty of job opportunities for ex-pats teaching English, IT and Financial sectors. The pay may not be great for Western standards but ex-pats do get paid better than locals and given teh cost of living, your money will go far.
While in Belgrade I was offered a job at a language school. They covered all my accomodation costs and the wages were more than sufficient but alas I had to go back to Limerick to finish off my degree.
Speaking of Oz, I have heard so many stories about the place both good + bad but Oz would not appeal to me since half of Ireland is over there right now. If your getting away, go to a place that has a different culture & language which gives plenty of opportunities to meet the locals and absorb oneself into the local culture. I have been thinking about heading to Russia, but probably not until next year.

I visited Edmonton on my most recent visit to Canada which was in 2004. When did you live there as a matter of interest?

When i was there it hit -37c:eek: and the following day it snowed 17 inches in 10 hours. There are lots of shops and restaurants built underground so when it does get cold you don't have to walk the streets.
I know lots of people say the Oz is to over run with backpackers but to see the real Oz you need to wander off the beaten track a bit.But then again to get a real experience of anywhere you need to do it.

I remember being at a game between Town and Limerick in the 80s on a bitterly cold Sunday and my feet were frozen /atafter the game - I got the bloody flu as a result and missed four days "work" as a result.
Hope the new ground will have underseat heating in the stands for auld fcukers like me - atfconline - are you listening???:p :D

Just thinking - for a Longford Town fan involved in Athlone's ground - that really is "working abroad". LOL

True! Very true! I worked in Edinburgh, (not strictly abroad) for three months as a bartender. Great craic, beautiful scenery, gorgeous chicks (the accent!!!!), sound people, cosmopolitan atmosphere, great craic during the festival (and the bars close later!!!) But not much employment unless you want to do barwork or other part-time work and the local 'neds' can p!ss you off. Great to kill time for a few months before your next destination on your trek. (Mine was Longford, I ran out of money!!!)

I'm hoping to take up USIT's offer of a 12 month work visa for Canada after my leaving next year. It's only about €350 for the visa, not too shabby.

Hope you're going to Vancouver otherwise you will experience the joys of a Canadian Winter..... which will make you nostalgic for freezing your buns off at the Carlisle on a November night at a Bray Wanderers match :p

Said it b4 but Vancouver Island has to be one of my fav places on the planet....its beautiful....and the bridge from the Island to the mainland is awesome!
Still Edmonton holds my heart more for sentimental reasons.
Loved driving thro the rockies and into the Oconogan (sp?) Valley where all the farms with peaches and strawberries etc are....yummy!
