If we had a double album, soundtrack for Foot.ie, what song would you include and why?
We'll assume that we have 22 tracks per CD so that should give us plenty scope to accomodate everyone.
I'll start with
Track 1 - U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
There have been many incidents on foot.ie where the general good will of others has helped some people to do something or go somewhere which was only possible as a result of that help.
The Cork City FC and Ireland away trips being good examples.
Full track listing.
CD One
Track 01 - U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
Track 02 - ABBA - Dancing Queen
Track 03 - Sultans Of Ping F.C. - Give Him A Ball And A Yard of Grass
Track 04 - Saw Doctors - N17/To Win Just Once
Track 05 - Libertines - Campaign Of Hate
Track 06 - Half Man Half Biscuit - Friday Night And The Gates Are Low
Track 07 - The Undertones - Teenage Kicks
Track 08 - Morrissey - You're the one for me, Fatty
Track 09 - The Stone Rosses - This is the one

Track 3) Sultans Of Ping F.C. - Give Him A Ball And A Yard of Grass
IMO the best football song about, driving, energetic stuff. Rumoured to be written about Dave Barry, Cork CIty Legend.
"A man can have no greater love than to give 90 minutes to his friends"
Indeed

I'll allow it provisionally but you might need a better argument if a more worthy song is submitted.

Now, now Eire06, this is my thread. :p
Dancing Queen is relevant because of a trip to Sweden by a number of posters on this forum.
I've never heard N17 being sung anywhere but have been informed that it's popular at the All Ireland Ploughing Championships. :D

The quote came from Clough but don't think the song was about him.
I thought I read an interview at the time saying it was about the boy Clough.
I alwasy thought was about him too but maybe they just used that for wider audience.

It's bad going when we can't even fill one CD.
Eire06 will have to nominate some more Saw Doctors tracks. ;)

As no Derry or Rovers fan has contributed these (I think)
Teenage Kicks
Build me up buttercup
the respective fans renditions would bring a tear to a glass eye :D
I'd like to suggest (seeing as we're still on CD1)
"You're the one for me, Fatty - Morrissey" for all those still clinging to the idea that Dolan will be back at CCFC (or for Waterford fans now that ger O'Brien has left) :D
Controversial

For any big matches
This is the one: The Stone Rosses
A must
Was listen to it none stop in the run up to the Harps V Dundalk final game of season last year

Heard it was Clough too.
Cant have a match with Digger without the Can can or the Hokie-Pokie being sung!
Would include 'Smile like you mean it' by The Killers for Bowyer and Dyer if this included EPL games

An Dearg Doom Or Put 'em under pressure or whatever the soccer version is called.
Best football song ever.

Or "I Have Forgiven Jesus (Lennox) - Morrissey"
REALLY Controversial! :D :D

I thought I read an interview at the time saying it was about the boy Clough.
Thought the song was made up soley of Brain Clough quotes i.e. 'if God had meant football to be played up there he would have put goal posts in the air.'

Its about Missing Galway\Tuam  :D
Think you and Peadar are out to get me
Well I didn’t see much future
When I left the Christian brothers school
So i waved it goodbye with a wistful smile
And I left the girls of Tuam
Sometimes when I’m reminiscing
I see the prefabs and my old friends
And I know that they’ll be changed or gone
By the time I get home again.
And I wish I was on the n17
Stone walls and the grass is greener
Travelling with just my thoughts and dreams
Well the ould fella left me to shannon
Was the last time I traveled that road
And ass we turned left at claregalway
I could feel a lump in my throat
As I pictured the thousands of times
That I traveled that well worn track
And I know that things will be different
If I ever decide to go back
Now as I tumble down highways
Or on filthy overcrowded trains
There’s no one to talk to in transit
So I sit there and daydream in vain
Behind all those muddled up problems
Of living on a foreign soil
I can still see the twists and the turns on the road
From the square to the town of the tribes

For them last moments that seem to last forever when your 1-0 up and the opposition is on the attack and they are looking good:
The Futureheads - Trying Not to Think About Time
If your one of them teams that seem to forever miss out and are now living in the lands of pessimism (no teams named) then this should be your season anthem:
The Coral - Waiting for the Heartaches
This one is for all the League Ref's decisions.
The Zutons - Confusion

Peader - Teenage Kicks and Build me Up Buttercup are 2 different tunes, not the name of a band and a tune. We need to get you up to Derry, boy...... :D
Anyone know Adam & Joe's pish-take football anthem 'Ball, ball ball; footy, footy, footy' (sadly it's an England lament). Includes the famous line "Pork pie, sausage roll, come on England - give us a goal....!".
Whilst on the theme of England footie tunes, Three Lions is by far the best footy tune ever. Though I don't want it listed, as it's English :o)
Can I have 'Joxer went to Stuttgart' then by the legend that is Christy Moore...? :) I'm sure 'whacker' from Inchicore would've been a Pat's fan....

The Foundations - Build Me Up Buttercup and Undertones - Teenage Kicks to put the record straight. Teenage Kicks is the best irish pop song along with Revelate by the Frames, I am not even a frames song but its very good!

Don't know the song, but the "Meat Pie, Sausage Roll" thing is an old Oldham chant. Smug Roberts brought it to Manch prominence with Pete and Geoff on Key103 (before they took Chris Evans money and departed to Virgin Radio).
7 Nation Army by the White Stripes would be my choice for the Town nomination. Popular terrace chant about the cup wins, and a great tune as well.

Track 3) Sultans Of Ping F.C. - Give Him A Ball And A Yard of Grass
IMO the best football song about, driving, energetic stuff. Rumoured to be written about Dave Barry, Cork CIty Legend.
The live version of this song on the Stupid Kid EP opens with O'Flaherty saying something like:
"This is a song about a nice footballer who plays for Notts Forest" (Crowd shouts "Nigel Clough")
This is a great song BUT IT IS NOT THE SULTANS BEST FOOTBALL SONG!
"I'm in love with a football hooligan" is pure gold :ball: :ball:
I asked my baby if she'd like to come & play
She said no way honey it's a Saturday
I know a place where we can have some fun
Let's go and see Chelsea try & kill someone!
(Should really have googled to check if they are actually the lyrics but they are the way that I remember them & that's the way I wanna keep it :D )
