If McDermott was too switch in the coming months. Am I right in thinking he wouldn't be available for our U21 campaign because he's already played for the north in their qualifying?
That's correct. See article 8.1(b) here: http://resources.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/02/58/14/48/2015fifastatutesen_neutral.pdf#page=67

An article from the Derry Journal on the experience of Derry City's Ronan Curtis as the only LOI player in the most recent Ireland under-21 squad (besides Ryan Delaney, who's on loan at Cork from Burton Albion): http://www.derryjournal.com/sport/football/derry-city/derry-city-ronan-curtis-thriving-off-ireland-experience-1-8194726
It mentions that Wales manager Chris Coleman is Curtis' Godfather, although I'm not sure how that came about.
That's wrong - Rory Hale and Trevor Clarke were also named in the squad.

That's wrong - Rory Hale and Trevor Clarke were also named in the squad.
Oddly, it was a claim made by the author of the piece, Simon Collins, whilst Curtis is quoted later in the piece making the same claim:
Curtis certainly didn’t do his reputation any harm and the fact he was the League of Ireland’s sole representative in Noel King’s panel - although Burton Albion’s Ryan Delaney is currently on loan at Cork City - was a huge boost for the St Johnston lad.
It’s been a great week for [Derry City]. It’s great to see players getting a chance with the international teams. Myself with the Republic and being the only player from the League of Ireland in the team. But it’s not just me, there’s Ben (Doherty), Conor McDermott and Eoin (Toal) as well getting their chance with the N. Ireland teams. So it’s good to see that.

Well he was the only player in the starting eleven, so I assume he meant that. Clarke pulled out due to injury but I assume Hale was with the squad but not named.

Lost 2-1 and Germany hammered Israel
Disappointing to lose to an injury-time goal - wonder why our top-scorer Grego-Cox wasn't in the squad (he did play and score for QPR four days earlier) - still in it, at least, but this defeat, combined with Norway beating Germany, means that we'll have to get at least one result against Germany and have a near-perfect record against the rest of the group to make a play-off

Yes but his brother Ronan is a striker and he's just scored in the first minute with the goal set up by his Derry City team mate Ronan Curtis.

I know it was only a friendly, but that's a decent result, considering how we've been hearing a lot recently about how Iceland are doing everything right that we're doing wrong, in terms of player development. Especially when you take into account that Kieran O'Hara, Declan Rice, Connor Ronan, Harry Charsley and Reece Grego-Cox didn't play and Jake Doyle-Hayes only made a cameo appearance. However, it is possible that Iceland also took the opportunity to try out some fringe players.

in the two games in our group on Thursdayt night, Germany beat Israel 3-0 and Kosovo beat Azerbaijan 2-0
I think 3 wins from the five games this year (Azerbaijan(H), Kosovo(A), Germany(H), Israel(A), Germany(A)) should be enough to secure second spot

Must be some buzz for them. Particularly in the light of Michael O'Neill's bile. What a special moment that must be for a pair of brothers to score in the same match for their country. Future is bright for them too. Big year at Derry could open a lot of doors.

I looked back at the link to fai's website, and Connor Ronan's name has been removed from the original squad list. He was noted as not being available for the friendly against Iceland on fai.ie, and played for Portsmouth at the weekend. Curiouser and curiouser.

That's possibly it - not being released by his club.
He came off on 51 minutes. the commentary on sky sports says
"51 Portsmouth make a change as Ronan is replaced by Evans. Seems to be tactical rather than an injury as Ronan jogs off the pitch."

Think we will need more than 3 wins to get into a playoff - only top 4 2nd best teams will make it. - current table attached. Wins v Kosovo (a) and Isreal (a) would give us 13 - another point v Germany at home = 14 - might be enough - a tall order however you look at it.

Anyone any idea why Chiedozie Ogbene hasn't been selected to play for any of the Irish underage teams? I appreciate he hasn't had game time with Brentford yet but it seems madness to leave this guy out when we have such a lack of youth talent.

Just back from the game. Azerbaijan didn't come to play football, or even try to get out of their own half. Apart from one cross/shot that O'Hara tipped on to the bar didn't trouble the Irish goal. Their number 9 did look a handful though.
The two strikers were barely involved. Grego-Cox looked to be carrying a few extra pounds, and was outstripped by the opposition full backs a few times. Rice and Curtis were the most impressive players in the first half. Cullen looked good on the ball too.
Once the Irish players got the ball in the opposition half, the Azeris all dropped back to defend, and through sheer force of numbers repelled the attack.
The second half was basically the Irish players getting into the last third of the pitch, the Azeris getting in the way, kicking the ball clear, and waiting for the next attack. We were denied two penalties, one which was clear cut, one maybe 50-50.
The players were getting frustrated with the opposition time wasting, and at least two of them were booked for it by the ref. Fittingly enough, one of their innumerable fouls led to the goal, a free kick delivered to the far post and bundled over the line by Shaun Donnellan, see below.

Dundalk midfielder Jamie McGrath called up for Republic of Ireland U21s
Republic of Ireland U21 Head Coach Noel King has named an 18-player squad for the U21 European Championship qualifiers against Kosovo and Germany.
The U21s travel to Kosovo tomorrow for the qualifying match in Mitrovica on Friday with kick-off at 6pm Irish time.
They then face Germany on Tuesday, September 11, at Tallaght Stadium at 6pm.
Dundalk midfielder Jamie McGrath has been called into the squad following his impressive form for the Lilywhites in the SSE Airtricity League.

Leeds United's Connor Shaughnessy is recalled to the squad and Everton's Harry Charsley also comes back into the squad after he was ruled out of the Azerbaijan victory through injury.
The Hale brothers, Ronan and Rory, who both scored in the 3-1 win over Iceland in March also keep their place in the squad as Noel King's side look to qualify for next year's U21 European Championships.
Yeovil Town defender Shaun Donnellan has been ruled out of through injury whilst QPR winger Olamide Shodipo is also sidelined.
Ireland are currently second in Group Five behind Germany in top spot having played one game less. Kosovo are in third.

Noel King said: "The players are really looking forward to the week ahead and the squad are excited about the fixtures. They've got ourselves into a great position going into the games and they'll look to secure more crucial points in these next two games.
"I'd like to welcome Jamie McGrath into the U21 squad for the first time. He's a player I've been watching for some time and has really impressed for Dundalk this season. It's also great to have Harry Charsley back in the squad after injury.
"The group are missing a few players, the likes of Connor Dimaio, Olamide Shodipo and Shaun Donnellan so the group will have to come together and work hard during the week to get the results we need."
