Iceland also score. Can you explain the permutations to me? Is it only the very specific scorelines that (I think) legendz outlined that will see us avoid France - if we win against Italy (and only if we win 3-0)?

I like the quirkiness of the format. It's unpredictable and more a reflection of the world we live in. I'm enjoying the euro's more than the World Cup.

Generally the Euros are much much much better than the World Cup as a rule.

Euro 2008, bar the final result was a cracker. Some great games in 2012. I'm not gone on this one, but that Croatia-Spain game last night was wonderful and reinvigorated my enthusiasm.

If third place in F is worse than D and then we qualify with any sort of win then we avoid France and that whole side. So it's working out well, nobody expected Hungary to be beating Portugal.

Slovakia (B) and NI (C) have already qualified. If we win any win then we qualify too. So if D qualify instead of F then look up the wiki table and BCDE combination gives Winner D (Croatia) vs 3E.

If you have no further questions. Yes.

Me too.

I think tennis should / could experiment with no seeding. Seeding only entrenches the existing order.

[Edit: I had written the message below just as Portugal scored an equaliser so when I talk about how things stand, I'm referring to Hungary leading 1-0.]

No, as far as I know, if things stay as they are and we beat Italy by a single goal, Portugal will finish third on 2 points, which won't be enough to make them one of the best third-placed teams, so we'll match up with Croatia in the weaker half of the draw. Open to correction, but that's my understanding.

I think the Iceland-Austria result is irrelevant so long as Portugal lose as an Iceland win will see them qualify in first or second with 5 points and Austria ending on 1 point. Meanwhile, a draw would leave Iceland second on 3 points and Austria with only 2 points. An Austria victory would leave Iceland on 2 points and Austria on 4 points, but they'd leap-frog into second position with Portugal still behind them on 2 points.

A Portugal draw would give them the 3 points to see them through on account of their goal difference. But if there is no third-placed qualifier from this group (F), I think that means we match up with Croatia.

If that sounds complicated, there's more info in graph form here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2016#Knockout_phase_structure

Best to look at the table, as it's sort of difficult to explain given all the possible outcomes! :)

Edit: Bah, Portugal equalise just as I'm typing that.

As it stands. This drops Portugal into the strong side of the draw. They would play England in round of 16.

UEFA could have taken a look at tennis' Davis Cup when coming up with the convoluted UEFA Nations League. Knock-out rounds over 2 legs would seem more appropriate than the group stage format in 4 divisions.

Iceland play England

Hungary play probably Belgium.

And now Ireland can knock Turkey out.

Wow!

davidatrb
22/06/2016, 6:00 PM
Germany play Slovakia.

France play Ireland or Northern Ireland depending if we get a best 3rd for E.

Wales play Northern Ireland or Turkey.

Croatia play Portugal?

legendz
22/06/2016, 6:01 PM
If we win and finish 3rd:
France/Ireland v England/Iceland.

In the most unlikely scenario we win 3-0 and Sweden win 1-0:
Wales/N. Ireland v Hungary/Ireland

Did Iceland shoot themselves in the foot with that late goal?

Italy were the first team to win their group and Spain is their reward.

Italy, Spain and Germany are in the same quadrant of the knockout stages.

Croatia win Spain's group and Portugal is their reward! Mad stuff.

And cements Belgium in the weak side of the draw.

Did our win send Albania home?

i would have liked them to go through, but obviously not at our expense.

We have unfinished business with France. ;)

Obviously we will be up against ref as bent as a corkscrew too.

We should warm up v France with a bit of GAA.

Weird hand-passing game; the French won't know what to make of it.

Hmm, trying to figure that one out Kingdom! When does "recent" begin?

I was thinking turn of the millenium tbh.
win v France in 2009 (stade de handball)
win v Italy in Charleroi (albeit friendly)
win v |germany in |Dublin
no wins v England & Spain

Hungary? Croatia? Poland???? Wales in 2007 and then the Nations cup thingy.

So 3v 2

Same as how we "outclassed" Bosnia in those friendlies.

Had a feeling it might have been - looks like I'm mixing it up with the other friendly that kind of wasn't (because it wasn't on TV) in 1991. Which we did win, though I thought it was 0-0.

No, Brady's testimonial was a 2-1 win at home v Finland in 1990 (my first ever game!)

I can't remember much of the Hungary one other than that I think it was only on the radio. Certainly wasn't on TV.
