Released by Bristol City, after 160 appearances in the EFL Championship. Yesterday, Bristol Live reported that 7 clubs were interested in O'Dowda, as he is now out of contract, i.e. free. Today (Tuesday) only Birmingham City and Cardiff City are mentioned (www.the72.co.uk).

Why wouldn't they trigger the year extension and then sell him? Surely they would get 500k for him

Was apparently on 5 figures a week and has a bad injury record. So they were looking at spending £500k+ on wages for a lad not rated at the club if nobody made an offer. Teams might take a chance on him on a free, but I doubt many would pay a transfer fee for a 27 year old with his injury record.

I see Mark Kinsella's daughter won a gold in gymnastics too.

Looked good in the highlights everything good came through him , had an assist and should have had a penalty

Good to see him showing the form he showed in his first few years at Bristol City, when he was considered one of the best midfielders in The Championship - hopefully that will continue and, if it does, we should definitely bring him back soon.

Second of the season for Cardiff this evening.

A dark horse for a call-up this month?

Yeah, for all the excitement here about our prospects, it’s mostly the “old guard” that are making the best case so far this season for a call up and consideration for first XI. O’Dowda and Brady the two that spring to mind straight away.

Given Kenny is a fan I wouldn't really say a dark horse call up. Wasn't picking him before because of fitness and even brought him back into the squad last November. Similar with Brady whose shown consistent game time this season will get his return to the squad.

And O'Dowda scores!! Might be a record day for BIG goals in the Championship?

Six Irish goals in the Championship today. Probably been a while since that last happened alright.

Callum O'Dowda remains a serious doubt for Cardiff's game at Blackpool on Good Friday, after he was taken off at half-time in the recent derby v Swansea. Manager Lamouchi says O'Dowda picked up a hamstring injury while playing for Ireland recently.

Callum O'Dowda will miss the rest of the season after suffering a concussion. The 28-year-old was withdrawn as a precaution halfway through Cardiff's 2-1 win over Rotherham United on Thursday night, after taking a blow to the head. Cardiff manager Lamouchi says the club will respect the EFL rules (governing head injuries/concussion). (Wales Online, 28 April)

His winning goal against Norwich was brilliantly taken. He's still definitely an alternative to Robbie Brady at LWB.

Yes indeed. How is he defensively? I've mainly seen him as a winger. Never really seen him as LB

I'm not sure he has the defensive awareness tbh, he is fast enough to make up for some weakness, so maybe with some experience would improve. He also has really struggled to stay fit in the past few years, hard to rely on him because of it. I feel like we've been waiting for him to come good for 5+ years

Eirambler

He's not good enough defensively to play left wing back at international level, never mind left back in a four as we are now playing. Offers a useful option on the wing alright though.

He has been playing LB for Cardiff for quite a while now so is well accustomed to the role and he offers enough going forward from the position (see assist and goal vs Norwich) to make him more than viable as an alternative to Brady. Not that I necessarily think Brady needs to be replaced (I've been a defender of his here), just that O'Dowda is an decent back-up/replacement with plenty of international experience.

Greece away was the day I felt it was a no go, but tbf he wasn't the only one not to show up that day.

Wasn't it more that Lenihan(I think) was the left side of the three centre halves, and kept drifting into the centre, leaving a massive hole on the left side of defence?

They both jumped out to me as poor on the day. All that said, we’re so limited with options at left full/left wingback we’re in no position to write him off.

I think you're right about the goal, as a duo on that side it definitely didn't work, but I just have vague memory of it at this point.

I prefer him as an attacking option personally, I just feel like he's another player who hasn't quite reached a level I thought he could, but there's still time if he stays fit.

Pulls one back for Cardiff away to Portsmouth.

Well, well!

These two sides are putting on quite the show at Fratton Park and Cardiff have made the perfect response, having gone two goals down.

They make a period of pressure on the right hand side count as Andy Rinomhota whips in a dangerous ball.

Callum O'Dowda wins his tussle with the defender and heads brilliantly in at the far post with no chance for Pompey goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid.

What a game we have here.

Our 58th choice centre back Conor Shaughnessy scored for Pompey

Shaughnessy the 30th Irish player to score in the Championship this season. We really do have ridiculous depth in certain positions now. It's the standout individual quality that we lack, even if just two or three players could get themselves to a level where they're regular starters for top 6 clubs in the Premier League, or equivalent teams around Europe, it would make a world of difference.

Couple of quality midfielders that don't get injured too often, and the same with full-backs and we would actually be in a good situation ! !

I was about to say two would be enough - a central, deeper midfielder and an attacking midfielder.

The problem is that every time I say that I think of two players I was fooled into thinking would occupy this positions.
