Two assists for O'Dowda as Bristol City lead 2-1 at Sunderland. Seems to be starting to make a bigger impact.
read some comments on bbc after bristols win over palace during the week saying that bristol will do well to hold onto him on current form.

I think we should give a bit of credit to MON for giving O'Dowda his chance against Belarus last year - his career seemed to have hit a bit of a plateau last season as he wasn't always a first-choice player for Bristol (although often coming off the bench). But his influence seems to be growing in recent weeks so it's good to know that he has a few caps under his belt already, as it gives us an already-tested option in midfield, should we need it against Denmark.

Seems to be coming into his own now, O'Dowda. And it's true, O'Neill does deserve credit for bringing him along. Now is he only had the courage of his convictions to give him a start in Copenhagen on Saturday week. We will need to defend in numbers, of that there can be little doubt, but McClean and O'Dowda on the wings will provide a nice escape valve for the defence and will threaten the Danes on the counterattack. Sean Maguire has also shown a real ability to run at opposition defences in some of the goals he's scored for Preston. Could be a job for him on the night.

Is there a danger O'Dowda will end up utilised as he's akin to Hoolahan in style?
Or is it just Hoolahan's stamina that keeps him out of the team?

He looks quite slight to me, mind you he is 75kg, mind you Shane long is 81 kg and about the same height.
Of of interest Damien Duff was only 59kg but he was about an inch shorter. Might as well throw in he is about
the same weight and height as Sean Maguire!! It is kind of funny how different player have different playing styles.

Models himself on James McClean: https://www.independent.ie/sport/callum-odowda-hopes-to-follow-republic-of-ireland-role-model-james-mcclean-35802206.html. Could also be described as a more upright Aiden McGeady with better crosses

Another assist tonight it seems. To me his composure on the ball and awareness of a pass makes him unusual for a winger cause he certainly has pace and crossing ability but not much tricks from what I've seen. Takes a good set piece which wes never seems to do. I'd love us to try to develop him in a midfield 3 rather than as a wide player To Help us develop as a side

Forget the developing. How about starting him in Copenhagen. Neither of Denmark's full backs are going to relish facing Callum. He's on fire at the moment. Admittedly he's taken his time to come through, but he's clearly a form player and he's exactly what we need on the night in Copenhagen. McClean on one wing, Callum on the other, with Shane Long in the middle. Play Wes behind that three and you have a strike force to keep Denmark busy for a while.

According to the piece linked above he hadn't any crossing ability, any end product a bit like mcgeady which they have specifically worked on with him. If he has it its only a recent thing.

Really playing himself further into contention for the Denmark games. Someone said it in this thread too but hats off to MON. He has seen enough to provide opportunities to O'Dowda and now he's looking like 17/18 is the season where he'll fulfill his potential after a stop/start season last year.

Bristol City don't expect O'Dowda to return this month - https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/taylor-set-to-have-hernia-operation/
As for the longer-term 'pair' of Hegeler, O'Dowda and Djuric, Johnson added: "They're further away [than some of the other injured players]. Both are progressing well and healing well but they have longer-term injuries so we don't expect to see them in February.

No, I don't think so. Horgan can go past people but in a different way.
That's good his crossing is now getting results. I think his crossing has generally been poor for us until last week. Too much air or misplaced.

One swallow does not a summer make. Lets see when he puts the ball 3 feet ahead of him against a team pressing or putting pressure on, we will see the O'Dowda we've come accustomed too. I think this moving inside playing centre is a greenshoot misnomer.

Don't think I can conclude and concur on that. I would say that MON is doing him no favours. He doesn't seem to know his role and if it's as a 10 then he doesn't appear comfortable there. Is he not a left winger?
DeLorean
20/11/2018, 10:55 AM
It's a collective malfunction at the moment while MON is inexplicably shoehorning fellas into positions that clearly don't suit them. I've no problem with him trying the odd positional adjustment in isolation, but he's creating havoc by implementing them en masse. Robinson as a number nine, Hendrick in the holding role, McClean wing back, Christie midfield, O'Dowda number ten, Long left side of the back three, etc. We're playing exactly the way you'd expect us to play after being set up like that.
This five at the back thing is a waste of time without a proper midfield too. We might as well play four at the back and get an extra body in midfield where we're being swamped.
Stuttgart88
20/11/2018, 11:42 AM
I was shouting out for 5 at the back for a long time but want to revert to a 4 again. 5 can work but not with the way O'Neill picks the other 5!
We used to bang on about the pairs and units that worked so well under McCarthy. What pairs and units do we have now? I'd say none.
Whereas with 4 at the back the pairs could be Coleman and Doherty on the right (or even Christie), Stevens and Brady on the left. Hendrick offering a triangle with these on either side. We still need a deep plying player like Williams or please God Crowley can play a bit and fill that role, a baller who can get on the ball and move it along. Then it all starts taking shape.

What was Mick's preferred formation at Ipswich? I always had him down as a good man for 4-4-2. That would be a formation that would very much suit Callum.
I know Mick did reference getting crosses into the box in his interviews after getting the post.

I think Mick said when he got the job that 442 was obsolete as a viable formation (in his opinion) I don't think o dowda has the tools to be a proper winger(not much pace,no strength,no great tricks, ) but that sweet left foot, neat and tidy technique, great engine, lovely acceleration and unusual(for us) appreciation for what's happening around him make me think he is made for the point of a midfield three

To me he is the closest thing to a 10 we have unless we get Crowley on board. I'd be very happy with a midfield three of McCarthy, Hendrick and o dowda with Brady and Robinson wide of a front man. To me Brady has been lost as a 10 .

I'd like O'Dowda and Hendrick in 8 roles in that formation like the Euros when Brady and Hendrick occupied them. Iike that midfield. The front man is the issue unless Long gets motoring.

Reports of Premiership interest
https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2019/01/26/report-leeds-linked-callum-odowda-scouted-by-premier-league-side/
According to The Times (https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/ireland/callum-odowda-is-starting-to-realise-his-potential-5psbjm08l), a number of top-flight clubs had scouts in attendance to watch the winger in City's 2-1 FA Cup win over Bolton last night, in which O'Dowda opened the scoring.
The clubs aren't specified, but it's certainly bad news for the Yorkshire club, considering top-tier sides can blow them out of the water.
It must be noted that O'Dowda may not even be on Leeds' radar anymore, amid suggestions that the Elland Road club wants Dan James from Swansea City
Perhaps worth noting Callum help defeat Martin O'Neil's Nottingham Forest in his first match in charge, no doubt Martin congratulated him on a good performance! :p

I think maybe Leeds pulled out because of the new contract perhaps, that would make him more expensive I expect? That would be be so much of an issue for premiership clubs though if indeed any are interest. I don't think any are named even on the Times article which may be speculation more than anything else. I mean premiership clubs must have scouts at lots of games, and as no clubs have been named it seems a bit of a nothing story.

By the way O'Neil's Forest are now 2-1 up, put plenty of time to go, so would not be surprised if they ended up getting beat! (But I hope not!).
