View Full Version : Televised Games 2015
Setanta Ireland on Saorview is a possibility, but the reality is so much of the population insist on paying for TV, despite there never being a wider choice of FTA terrestrial and satellite (including all the top rated channels) that they'd probably find it hard to justify the transmission costs.
I'll say again, I just don't get RTE's live coverage. The costs are surely in covering the match, but then they scrimp on time for the analysis. So we have a highlights package that has way too much talk and not enough action, and live coverage basically all action and no talk.

I can't understand for the channels a lot of people watch that they don't just get in the one off payment satellite dish and box
I'd like to know from a business sense, would it be more profitable for Setanta Ireland to get on saorview?

Maybe they are rethinking things after the viewing figures of the Dundalk v Bate game...not likely!
Peaked at 237k
60k for live LoI games
34k for Soccer Republic.
Id like to know what live EPL games on RTE would be and Champions League games too. One thing though is that that figure for the BATE game is certainly useful when dealing with sponsors - not bad at all for the likes of Fyffes with their brand on show for nearly a couple of hours. Plenty of online and abroad viewers that wouldnt be counted too which could push the figure to the 250k mark. To state the obvious it does show that the CL really is where the leverage is for income beyond prizemoney!

It is an interesting comparison and certainly shows a glimpse of what could be achieved if the league could develop on a European competition front. Free to view is bound to pick up more viewers than subscription. I dont really know how viewing numbers are collated but with games on sky or BT are viewers in the pub, for example, factored in?

Nope, pub viewers aren't factored in. Same could be said for Dundalk match against BATE though, would assume plenty of pubs were showing it across the country and especially pubs were probably packed out in most of Dundalk for it.

They were! It was likened to a World Cup (which Ireland were in of course) as those without tickets headed out for the game. There were also long queues at Tesco and the like with people buying beers and snacks to group up and sit in to watch the game, and also those watching on the big screen at the town Square. The restriction on capacity at Oriel frustratingly lost the club significant cash as it would have outsold even the League decider, but that's a different issue.
These sort of nights are not a regular thing but if a rough estimate of 300k watched a LoI side in their 1st tie of the CL, 2nd round after a defeat away 1st leg but with a chance of going through, well there is some, at least little, hope that things could improve for the domestic game image. Was Pat's home game against Legia televised? I was abroad at the time. A comparison with that would be a gauge of whether the numbers for the BATE game are a bit of an anomaly or whether interest is generated for European hopefuls.
I am obviously biased, but retaining the league and doing it all again and with a bit of luck in the draw the whole league could benefit if the TV numbers show some public appetite for seeing domestic teams in Europe doing well; rather than going in to Celtic, or Man U default supporter mode and belittling homegrown efforts.
(yes I am on one of those boring quiet work nights! which now that ive said it we will get hammered 'til 8am)

I was chatting to whoever that is on twitter with the ratings last night and asked for some comparable figures, he just got back to me this morning with some for the same time slots on RTE.
Friday 7:30-9:30:
Fri average excluding European Championship Qualifiers, World Cup and 6 Nations:
87k, 102 including them. 2014 figures.
Wednesday: 7:30-9:30:
Wed average excluding World Cup and Champions League:
104k. Including World Cup and Champions League 130k. 2014 figs
I know we're only going on a two game snapshot of a league decider and a bandwagon jumping CL qualifier but again the figures for those two:
Dundalk V Cork:
Average 163k Peak 251k Fig higher but Oct TV viewing higher than summer
Dundalk V BATE ave 135 peak 237k
Context @SoccRepublic (https://twitter.com/SoccRepublic) 34k
Live LOI matches average 60k
Couple of things to factor in; yes the viewers for those 2 games show there's a market there for people to watch and that they will watch the LOI but it's arguably the 2 biggest games of the last year though and not a bread and butter league clash etc.
The trick is getting it as a regular scheduled thing, there should be match on at the same time/ day each week for the routine of it, viewers get into the habit of watching/ doing things as people are creatures of habit, especially when it comes to tv watching etc. Plus live sport is DVR proof so it's attractive to advertisers.
On the flipside, production costs for RTE obviously higher than running a 15 year old repeat of Friends or Reeling in the Years, clubs see a drop at the gate and get no money for games being on tv.
There is potential there, although The Nuge and his D4 fetish for egg chasing precludes anything else of course.

Surely its not beyond the financial whizz of the FAI to negotiate some form of payment when a game hits X number of viewers.

Have to say it was grand to see a good 15-20 minutes of build up before the game, apart from Stuey Byrne's rambling for about 5 of those mins as he completely forgot the point he was going to make! Much better than 2 minutes and 2 ad breaks and then kick off, hopefully they continue to do it this way going forward.

I noticed on the TV planner that Dundalk v Sligo is on RTE this Friday. The programme is down to start at 7 and finish at 9:30 but the kick off seems to still be 7:45 on the club website and it even says that time on the planner. I assume something will have to change, the kick off time more than likely.
