don't agree. many of our players wont have kicked a ball in weeks before the two upcoming matches. in that case there is no point playing a half paced friendly that would inevitably happen against most of the countries willing to play us. the fact that its England we are playing might make it a bit more competitive and therefore more useful with Scotland the week after

You know on second thoughts you might be right. I hope though we don't pick up any injuries in a frantic game against England.

Is it possible for someone to be suspended for the Scotland game if he got sent off against England?
I'm not talking about 2 yellows etc. I mean something crazy like a punch/stamp

England’s friendly with the Republic of Ireland is pointless and a mistake (http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2015/may/22/england-friendly-ireland-pointless-mistake)

catholic selection tastes
Huh?
Exactly
however it's not about grooming children, but some other meaning which I have never come across before, in this context catholic = progressive.

Hodgson selected "three potential new caps to add to 29 awarded to date, confirmed his catholic selection tastes."

I'd say he was deliberately going for the confusion there.

In light of Hodgson having awarded first caps to 29 players and having called up another three potential debutants for this squad, I think it makes sense within the small-'c' definition of the word (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/catholic?s=t) which seems to pertain to a sense of broad inclusivity (although that's not a definition with which I've been all that familiar either):

1. broad or wide-ranging in tastes, interests, or the like; having sympathies with all; broad-minded; liberal.

2. universal in extent; involving all; of interest to all.

I thought it was only us who had Catholic selection tastes!

If ever a woman says to you that she has catholic tastes, don't be put off.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/26/england-republic-of-ireland-police-additional-enforcement-measures

English FA on high alert for potential crowd trouble.

The assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts said the problem had been so pronounced during England’s games in Italy, Scotland, Estonia and Switzerland that “additional enforcement measures” were being re-introduced, for the first time in four years, before the match in Dublin on 7 June.

Will be interesting to see what sort of crowd turns up for this and whether MON will start with the team he intends to start against Scotland. Any idea how many tickets were allocated to England?

US scores thrice to complete comeback and beat Netherlands 4-3. You fine chaps must be stunned. What do people refer to them as? "The Dutch", "Netherlands", or "Holland"? Why do they have so many names? And who ratted out the Frank family? That was mean.

The Guardian listed our 'probable' team as:

Given
Coleman
O'Shea
Wilson
Ward
Walters
Whelan
McCarthy
McGeady
Murphy
Long

I hope they're wrong!

Looks a standard 4-4-2 with very little creativity. I'd prefer Brady left back, Walters somewhere other than the wing and Westwood in goals. I've kind of accepted the latter will actually happen though.

Crosby87

Just doing a cursory search, I think it will be only the 2nd time in history a team starts 4 players who's last name begins with the letter W.

Eyes will be firmly fixed on the players during the anthems to see if anyone will do a Warren Barton.

Lovely article here by Reid. Explains that his mother was born to two Irish parents and felt Irish and did her best to instill that Irishness in her kids so the option presented to him by Sadlier and Ryan was duly accepted. Honestly wish he had much more of a significant career in the green jersey. 13 of his 23 appearances for us came before his real breakthrough season, 05/06. And there were games around that time when he was in the middle and 25 years old that I thought he was sure to become a mainstay there, having been a sprightly right-side auxiliary player prior to that.

I heard Martin Lipton on the Second Captains podcast referring to someone in the same position as Reid but with a father born to two Irish parents. Lipton stated "Talk to X- he's English. Talk to his dad- he's English." Lipton stated he was fairly certain that this lad was going to play for England, whatever he knows.

Hard to believe Reid has less caps than Simon Cox. Reid was a good servant to Ireland.

Did Barton have a history of blessing himself before (big) matches ? ! ?

Did he have a Premonition that things were going to go tits up and figured this might give him an "in" with the majority of the crowd' (blooming good thinking if so)

Maybe he is a catholic ?

Or a harmful explanation! (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/england/10085395/I-have-never-been-so-scared-at-a-match-says-Matt-Le-Tissier-of-the-riot-that-halted-England-game-in-Ireland.html)

The first sign things weren’t right came during the national anthems. The booing started and you got a sense that some of the people involved weren’t football fans.

Happy that Westwood is starting. Would maybe have liked to have seen us try something with Arter. Hopefully the Ipswich duo will work well up front.

My guess is that he must be in pole position to start versus Scotland and Martin would rather look at other options today.

Straight off the bat, ITV referred to the FAI as "the Irish FA". That always jars with me for some reason.

Westwood was one of the few Irish players singing 'Amhrán na bhFiann'. Fair play! Did I hear jeering of 'GSTQ'?

Is Sterling being singled out for booing because of his situation at Liverpool? Jesus wept.

DannyInvincible

Not a bad showing so far. Things fairly even. We've had a lot of possession and a few chances to score, but it's very low-tempo from both teams, bar a few bursts from England.

Brady has great delivery from set pieces and open play. Top class.

McGeady has done a couple of very good things and has played well. Very Good.

Otherwise its been a bit of a training game but a goal would change that I suppose.

DannyInvincible
07/06/2015, 12:57 PM
I've liked the look of McGoldrick. His style might appear lackadaisical, but he has captured/won the ball in high positions on a few occasions. He's getting a raw deal on Twitter.

Wilson with an absolute brainfart there. Far too slack for a last man.

Robbie's returning from injury for LA Galaxy against Vancouver Whitecaps tonight, if I heard correctly. Will join up with the squad in the next few days.
