[QUOTE=tetsujin1979;1951669]Cracking finish from Hourihane against Birmingham today
Eighth of the season - great to see him back scoring again, particularly more of his special long-range strikes - could be a useful weapon in the Nations League and beyond - let's hope he makes the step up to the Prem next year.

Him and McGeady must be the top Irish strikers in Championship

Hourihane is top, with eight, followed by Daryl Murphy with seven, then David McGoldrick with six (plus two EFL Cup goals) McGeady with six, Hogan with five (plus three EFL Cup), O'Brien with four (plus two FA Cup), Maguire with four and Alan Browne with two league goals (plus two FA Cup goals).

Whelan's goal at 1:47, Hourihane's at 2:26. Going by these short highlights, Villa rode their luck big time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ47-FA7wvIYou didn’t see Whelan in that sort of position very often for Ireland or for his other clubs either for that matter .
Hourihane is a good man for those balls coming out of the box . He has a good eye for a goal in that position . The Two Lads did good .

Playing with such reckless abandonment of his primary duties, it's no wonder Villa conceded two goals. :)

See ! Wheelman (misspelt , I’ll leave it ) Went Rogue and see what happens . The Football Gods don’t stand for that sort of thing .
Glenn was really impressed with Snograss’s cross but you could see that deep down he knew the Footballing gods would get him for his impetuiosity .

I see Whelan didn't celebrate against his former club.
I saw a lot of Owls' supporters complaining about the penalty in the last action of the game. The Villa player was floored. Clear penalty.

I forgot that Glenn played for Sheffield Wednesday . That explains the muted celebrations . He did take the chance of being unusually near the goal;)

Whelan's goal made it 2-2 in a match Villa would have been thinking they needed to win. I think that might have been as much to do with the non-celebration, but who knows.

Came off the bench late yesterday to assist the winner in the fourth of five minuted added on having been dropped, (and Whelan) after a 1-3 opening weekend away win.

Late winner from him tonight v Yeovil to prevent penalties and possibly a very messy post match interview for his manager.

He's miles behind. Good goal mind you and good press to be included. Really impressed with how he has solidified his place as they have improved. Still don't think villa have enough to go up.
He and Browne clearly most likely to get bought out of the championship but so few players make that jump these days. I wonder if there is a site that tracks transfers from CH to EPL.. I bet it's a declining number.

Dunno, I think Villas improvement under the new manager without him having had a shopping window suggests they aren't far away, not a million miles, that and 0-3 away wins at Derby and Middlesbrough suggest they have the level, or close to, Leeds on Saturday will tell us more. Hourihanes central role in the improvement is encouraging, yes. If they have a good January sales it could be on.
I think Robinson is more likely than either of those to get a transfer up to be honest. And plenty Villa fans looking at his form, *****d off he was their player but deemed not good enough in favour of several fancy haircut foreigners who landed them in the Championship.

They seemed to play 4 very attacking midfielders with just Whelan deep. I assume they wanted to ensure a home win to take away. Not sure if McGinn, good and all as he is, was involved in more Villa goals than Hourihane this year.

Gets a crack at the big time next year as Villa win the play-off final: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/48331145. Brings our number of midfielders in the EPL to five - six if Glenn Whelan can defy the odds and hold down a first team place (as long as Arter re-establishes himself at Bournemouth). Also improves the chance of Scott Hogan playing in the top tier, either at Villa or through a return to the Blades

Definitely good news for Ireland and Hourihane, and as for Whelan - the comeback kid? Always thought he did a better unobserved job in midfield than a lot of his detractors did - 'marking' space, cutting off runs, the kind of unrewarding stuff that allows team mates to do their jobs. Not sure Hogan will make it into either club's 25 man squad, but we live in hope.

From what I saw, he was playing a lot deeper, almost in the Whelan role. Worth thinking about as an option there as Whelan wont be around for ever, and we may want to accommodate Connell or Crowley.

Yes he was and played well there too. Dean Smith was asked if it was a difficult choice between the two afterwards. He complimented both players but said Hourihane's influence in turning the semi final in Villa's direction swung it for him.

I was watching the other playoff final and Josh Cullen seemed to be doing a good deep/central role too. Nothing flash, but keeping the ball moving always. I’d say he might look better suited to that position than Hourihane. Hourihane looked lost when played deep by O’Neill and I think he has something more positive to offer in the opponent’s half.
Hourihane definitely played deeper yesterday and did nothing wrong but he was less obviously impressive than in the semi-final and at other times this season when he played higher up the pitch. A UK paper (The Times?) did a tactical analysis of Smith’s management at the weekend and they showed a picture of 6 players ahead of the ball as an example of their commitment to positive football. I’d say Smith thought being more conservative yesterday was a better approach.

Thought of Hourihane as an average to slightly above avearage player. But I have to say he played wonderfully well for Villa at Wembley yesterday. He broke up more than a couple of Derby attacks and distributed the ball brilliantly. Top marks to him.

Surprised that Hourihane's own thread hasn't been commented on since May. Seems to be really enjoying the Carabao Cup, scoring his third in two games tonight: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49736853

Hes a nice player but like so many Irish midfielders before him he seems to hide too often rather than demanding the ball. Doesnt generate much excitement so that probably why this thread is a bit quiet

Connolly was obviously the big news today and rightly so, but Hourihane is hitting some form at the right time for us, a goal, an assist and won a penalty against Norwich today in a 5-1 win.

He was really good last night. Set piece deliveries were excellent but he was good in open play too. Villa’s second was from a ball that was whipped straight across the 6 yard box (the corridor of uncertainty as Crafty likes to call it) and it was attached by a Villa player. Very similar to a ball against Denmark that nobody from either team got a touch to. Villa were nicely balanced. Grealish involved in everything. If he could shoot he’d have had 3 on the night. He was a big loss to us, bigger than Rice by a long way I’d say (© SkStu).

Let's start a Bring Back Jack campaign! Lobby FIFA for an amendment to the one-switch rule, so that those who make a dumb switch, just because the media and international manager of the team they go to get all dizzy about a few impressive performances, but then spend years without making their senior debut, can return to the international set-up they played underage for.

Lovely delivery and deserved an assist but the Premier League's site has credited Tyrone Mings with it. Still, he's on five assists for the season, just one behind Grealish, and has those three league goals, just four behind top scorer Grealish. Let's hope Villa can stay up because, overall, that's a reasonable first season for a player who spent nine seasons climbing the ladder all the way from League Two and I'd love to see him get a second season there. If he can up his game a couple of notches at international level, as he keeps managing to do at club level, he'll be a handy asset for the next couple of campaigns.
