5: Keep hold of Conor Hourihane.
Former boss Danny Wilson deserves credit for investing wisely in Irish midfielder Hourihane, brought in for a six-figure fee from Plymouth with an impressive first campaign at Oakwell justifying the outlay.
Hourihane showed his predatory prowess by firing 14 goals to follow on from his tally of nine for Argyle last season and cannot have been far away from a spot in the PFA League One Team of the Year.
A big asset for Barnsley and they could do with keeping hold of him.

The beard is becoming popular in football, they needed something new now they all have tattoos!!
(although Conner does not seem to have any, I guess he missed the boat on that one).

Surprised he didn't move up to Championship following his goalscoring feats last year but he seems to be happy to ply his trade and get their eventually.
Interesting to note that he reckons Dan Crowley is still undecided. It's been the impression we've had here. In the same way that JG is undecided, because their switches now are final they are making a decision for the rest of their football career. Understandable that they hold off.
Hopefully, Hourihane progresses on anyway. Seems to have a fine attitude so hopefully he does well tonight.

No harm in a quick review of that 2008 under 17 side mentioned by Hourihane. Match report for Spain match in which he scored here: http://www.fai.ie/ireland/match/23/2008/302682
Ger Hanley (Galway United)
Padraic Ormsby (was on scholarship to Indiana Tech in the US)
Richie Towell (now at Dundalk)
Mark Connolly (captain at Kilmarnock)
Gavin Gunning (short term deal at Oldham following injury-plagued spell at Birmingham)
Conor Clifford (released by Southend, now with Boreham Wood in the Conference/National League)
Johnny Dunleavy (Cork City)
Aaron Doran (Inverness)
Conor Hourihan (Barnsley)
Paul Murphy (North End United in 2014/2015)
Greg Cunningham (was up front for this side, now playing left back or left midfield in the Championship for Preston)
Gavin Carlin (can't find anything)
Gearoid Morrissey (Cambridge United)
Robbie Brady (Norwich)
Darragh Satelle (Bluebell United is the last I can find of him)
Daniel Joyce (Sheriff YC)
John Sullivan (Bray Wanderers)
Shaun Timmins (Hume City in Australia)

Haha at least he can be found, some of them don't seem to have a Wikipedia page at all. Not too much to write home about there, plenty down the lower divisions in Spain. Montoya, Thiago and Canales probably the pick of the bunch these days by the looks of things. A few have gone on the represent Catalonia.

Looks like only one went on to represent Spain at full international level Thiago Alcântara. Two of ours got full international caps in Brady and Cunningham.

Just cracked the angle of post and bar with a worldie from 20 yards, so unlucky. 4-3 down, 13 to go in extra time.

He and Crowley both did well, and against better players than we typically come up against in international qualifiers.

Not knocking them or anything but it's still a pretty major step up to international football. Small teams perform above themselves against the top sides in cup competitions all the time. They've nothing to lose and play with a freedom and enthusiasm. It's a different ball game trying to make a difference at international level, even in a slugfest against likes of Georgia, who wouldn't have players of Everton's quality overall. I wouldn't mind having a look at Hourihane all the same (obviously Crowley even more so but that's hardly going to happen any time soon, if ever).
Goals below (unfortunately doesn't include Hourihane's shot off the bar). Crowley's goal was really expertly taken. The €50m man Stones didn't cover himself in glory for the opener!

Was at Millwall - Barnsley last week and Crowley was involved in everything positive from Barnsley. The only black mark against him was he was pushed off the ball fairly easily, but he's only just turned 18 and still very slight build.

Looking at him last night, Hourihane looks like he'd be comfortable playing Premier League football and you'd hope some managers at least at Championship level were watching. Wilkinson looks to have something about him too, despite a bad miss at 5-3 that could have made it a game again.
Scored against Blackpool today.
Goal!
Goal! Blackpool 0, Barnsley 1. Conor Hourihane (Barnsley) right footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner. Assisted by Marley Watkins.

Scored a 95th minute equaliser for Barnsley at home to Sheffield United today. I just happened to be on the Paddy Power app around the 88th minute and saw it was 8/1 for a draw. I was tempted to go all Tricky on it but unfortunately left it off ;) Hourihan had missed a penalty earlier as well, the reporter said "some penalties are missed, but this penalty was saved", I presume meaning there was little wrong with the strike but the keeper made a very good save.
Stuttgart88
28/11/2015, 6:48 PM
It was carefully placed / side-footed just inside the post but lacking any pace. Keeper read it well and got across very well. Good save but the kick lacked a bit of conviction, unusually for such a good ball striker.
His ball striking was very evident in injury time, an absolute bullet from 20 yards, though a crowded box. Quality strike. He went mental celebrating it too, as if he was desperately relieved his penalty miss wasn't too costly.

A 95th minute equaliser in a derby game worth going mental for anyway but that would have definitely added to it!

Scored last night to help secure a Wembley date against Oxford in the final of the Football League Trophy. The tie ended up going to a penalty shoot-out, in which Hourihane converted his (https://youtu.be/Pi9aTwyQrbs?t=1m8s), after two 1-1 draws. This supporter was particularly impressed. Playing championship next season, should be another good option to our midfield options. we're getting overloaded with midfielders right now. a few strikers coming on board would be good.

Yes took me a while to realise that after you informed, I tend to read more what I expect to
see rather than what is actually there hence it is a bit pointless proof reading my open posts,
I'd just read what I though I wrote anyway, which is often somewhat different from what I actually
wrote!
Sometime if I read a post a made a few days ago I can't make sense of it at all!!!!
Which may be just as well! ;)

It's also dawned on me that I really don't want Hourihane's international debut to be after he turns 25, lest he be known as the 'new Harry Arter' like Alan Judge became the 'new Wes Hoolahan'.

Why are we not bringing him into the squads for a look?

I think with O'Dowda / Forrester / Byrne all having made meet ups, he can count himself a little unfortunate not to have been given a chance to show what he can offer, I suppose cases like his will come under greater scrutiny in the proposed November friendly.
samhaydenjr

Barnsley's goals for August - Hourihane very prominent - scoring two goals, providing three assists, causing an own goal with a shot off the post and taking the corner that led to yet another goal. I had thought that he seemed destined to be a long-term lower league player up until recently, but with Barnsley going up this year, he's really grasping the opportunity he's been given. He really appears to be one of our form players in the Championship so far so if there is a November friendly, we could do worse than giving him a run-out, although I do acknowledge that we have some depth in midfield and there are others who could also justifiably stake a claim.
