duffer said the same but i never believed that a lad who travelled to Ireland games as an injured player would lose interest like that

Probably doing it more for his mates than for Ireland.

I suppose given he was effectively banned from the team for the last ten years of his career, some resentment could be expected.

He was in the World Cup 2002 squad but had to pull out through injury. Apparently was in tears after the charity game against Sunderland (in which he scored).

Found this recently and watched most of the game.

1st and 2nd halves of Ireland V Yugoslavia, 1999.
We played some lovely football back then. At one point, Alan Kelly catches the ball and immediately throws it to Stephen Carr at RB and we are on the attack.
Don’t think we’ve done that for about 15 years.

Appointed head coach at Macclesfield: https://www.mtfc.co.uk/news/2020/january/16.01.20-mark-kennedy-named-as-new-head-coach/
Doesn't look like they have a manager, so I guess he's manager in all but name?

Lost the first game in charge 2-1 away to a Colchester side managed by John Mcgreal. Probably the most 1990s thing you'll read today. .

Remember listening to a podcast with him and (I think) Kevin Kilbane where he said he'd no interest in the Irish national team. Wouldn't watch them in a big match even. Came across as a bit bitter. Think he felt he deserved more from McCarhty and he was scapegoat a bit after him and Babb were sent home before the Holland game.
He failed to mention he got back in the team and was offered a place in the 2002 world cup squad but pulled out due to injury.
Babb made his way back into the team as well.

Kennedy had a bad attitude as a player . I wonder how that works when such a player goes into management .

He persisted with playing and made a name for himself at city and wolves in their recovery. I never heard he had an especially bad attitude as a pro .. at the time dancing drunk on cars in Harcourt st was par for the course (have you ever heard Graham stacks stories...?). Slightly old fashioned maybe at that point but he was out of millwall, exposed to ruddock at Liverpool.. what do you expect like..;). his application in the latter half of his career suggests he got what he could out of it. I think he just wasnt as good as duff or as effective as kilbane. Killer player a lot of games at the top level.. easy to forget...
Kennedy could be an excellent lower league coach

There was a massive buzz around Kennedy when he first come onto the scene. Remember taking a day off school to watch him play a U21 international against England in Dalymount. :-) And remember us losing badly out in Vienna but Kennedy having the beating of his man and putting in dangerous balls. Never really got his career going from its early start.

I remember an Irish Times journalist, who I shall not name( out of respect for those hurt by his actions) relating a tale of an Irish player setting fire to a handful of the local currency in an ex-Communist country in front of a bunch of locals, for the craic (am absolutely disgraceful act).....anyone remember the story and know who it was, allegedly, or whatever?

Yes, I'm familiar with it. I've since heard it was a few different players, who did it in a few different countries, so I'm not sure of its validity

6 months? I'd say they should never have represented the country again. An appalling thing to do.

Tets: I would guess from that that it happened at least once so.

Not saying it was Kennedy, btw, just popped into my head when someone mentioned the Starksy & Hutch bonnet slide on Harcourt Street.

As good a time as any to remind ourselves of his cracker against Yugoslavia in 1999.
One of my favourite goals of all-time.

The Athletic carrying a story that Lincoln are targeting Mark Kennedy to take over as manager. He is presently assistant at Birmingham to Lee Bowyer. He last managed Macclesfield in 2020 but they were in all sorts of financial trouble and they were wound up in Sept 2020 soon after he left.

That is correct. The Athletic tend to be quite reliable in my right or wrong view.

Article below:
Lincoln City want Mark Kennedy to replace Michael Appleton as their next manager, with the League One club understood not to be targeting Michael Carrick.
Lincoln have been without a permanent manager since Michael Appleton left his role at the League One club after three seasons in charge.

Carrick, who worked as Manchester United’s caretaker manager for three matches earlier this season, had been linked to the vacancy but it is understood the club are targeting Kennedy, who is currently the assistant head coach at Championship club Birmingham City.

Kennedy, 45, has only had one job in management, replacing Danny Whitaker at Macclesfield Town in January 2020. But he took charge of just 12 matches before resigning, with Macclesfield eventually relegated to the National League as a result of a points deduction for financial issues.

In total Kennedy won one match at Macclesfield, drawing three and losing eight.

Prior to joining Macclesfield, Kennedy began his coaching career at Ipswich Town, eventually taking up a position coaching in Manchester City’s academy, while also working at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He briefly returned to Ipswich after his Macclesfield departure, before taking his current role as Lee Bowyer’s assistant at Birmingham in June 2021.
He represented the Republic of Ireland 34 times during his playing career, during which time he enjoyed stints at Liverpool, Manchester City, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Cardiff and Ipswich.

Lincoln finished 17th in League One this season, a year after reaching the play-off final where they were beaten by Blackpool.

Appleton succeeded Danny Cowley at the LNER Stadium in September 2019.
