Last season, Paddy Madden’s goals earned Yeovil Town promotion to the Championship and he was rewarded with his first senior international cap.

But does Mooney realistically believe that something similar could happen to him with new manager Martin O’Neill?

“It’s every footballers dream to play for Ireland and it would be fantastic for me and my family but first and foremost I think I have to be playing in the Championship.

“If I can get in the Championship next year with Leyton Orient or whoever then I’m giving myself the best chance to be involved in a squad but I do think it’s important that you’re playing at a higher level than League One. So hopefully we can do that.

“To be an international playing for Leyton Orient in the Championship probably would’ve been a pipe dream two years ago and for that to become a reality would be fantastic.”

Scores for the O's this afternoon.

Goal!
Goal! Leyton Orient 1, Peterborough United 0. David Mooney (Leyton Orient) header from the right side of the six yard box to the bottom left corner. Assisted by Lloyd James.

Plenty of Irishmen on the scoresheet today. Judge, or the "Irish Messi" as Jeff Stelling likes to call him, in particular, sounded like he had a great game. He could be playing Championship football again next season, whether it's with Blackburn or Brentford.

Andy Keogh scored too. The move to Blackpool has given him a new lease of life, similar to his first few weeks and months at Millwall.

3 in 44 for Milwall, now 2 in 3 for Blackpool, an arguably better team. If he keeps scoring there's no reason he won't be an option at international level again. The guy can finish once he has a bit of confidence.

We can all be a bit harsh on Keogh but the lad barely ever played in his natural position. God knows what job he could do for us if he was played as an out and out striker.

Interesting article in relation to Orlando City and their final tilt before moving into the MLS and the fact that their current roster is 'trying out' for a place on that MLS squad in 2015. Had a look at said squad and our own James O'Connor is plying his trade with them at the moment. James amassed plenty appearances at various tiers of English football before relocating to Orlando and is also assistant manager there so we could be hearing more about him in the coming years.

Completely off topic, but it seems Noe Baba's brother, Thierry, (should change his name) is a handy rugby player, and while young, is earning plaudits over on boards.ie. Supposedly, a good footballer too. Correlation with Adam and Sam Byrne, who come from another talented sporting family.

Southport further eased their Conference Premier relegation fears at the expense of Forest Green Rovers' play-off hopes.

Karl Ledsham superbly headed home Blackburn loan man John O'Sullivan's cross to set the Sandgrounders on their way four minutes into the second half.

James Norwood was close to levelling when he hit the bar with a 12-yard lob.

But O'Sullivan secured the victory with a 20-yard right-foot shot into the bottom corner from Ledsham's pass.

And Rovers goalkeeper Sam Russell had to make a string of fine saves to keep the score down.

John Coleman's Southport are now seven points clear of danger, while Rovers' first defeat in four matches leaves them three points adrift of the play-off zone.

O'Brien, McGinty and Burke barely got off the bench during their loan spells either. Adam Barton just signed for Fleetwood Town and he didn't make the match day squad this afternoon. Hasn't been working out for a fair few of our young lads.

Injury curtailed Anthony Forde and Cian Bolger from going out on loan too.
