Presumably RTE will want to show the English highlights in their usual evening slot.

Nah Nah Nah Nah

I'm fairly sure it was an Umbro idea for clubs to start wearing them "Italian" style. There's certainly no official LOI star for 10 titles

I loved when Rangers & Celtic had their star battle. Rangers went with 5 stars to signify 50 league titles, so Celtic responded with a 'platinum' star for the European Cup.

Aberdeen had 2 to signify their two European trophies (one of whcih was the Super Cup).

When Saturday Comes ran a funny article a few months back I think, mentioning all of this nonsense with clubs self awarding stars. Funny one re Juventus when they were stripped of 2 Seria A titles in mid 2000's, so they lost some of their stars on their shirt, but added in a cheeky line in latin under the crest '2 more were won on the pitch'

Just came across the following attached to Dan McDonnell's piece on Patrick Bamford: http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/fai-to-fight-england-for-blues-starlet-bamford-29188792.html

Elsewhere, RTE has secured the free-to-air broadcast rights of Ireland's Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 qualifiers.

The deal is part of a European Broadcasting Union (EBU) agreement which allows 30 countries to broadcast their national team matches on free to air stations, in addition to radio and digital platforms.

Discussions will continue about the future of 'Monday Night Soccer', the flagship programme for the League of Ireland.

When RTE announced the extension of their interntional rights from 2010 to 2014, it accompanied the expansion of League of Ireland coverage, including the introduction of 'MNS' and a gradual increase of live games.

But a separate discussion will now take place about the national broadcaster's plans for covering the domestic game.

This seems like bad news. If it's not in the same package then I don't see what bargaining chips the FAI have left. They'll hardly pay RTE to continue coverage.

Next year could be the start of a downward spiral in terms of media coverage for the LOI.

Completely agree with your analysis, by the way. Can only be a bad news for LOI coverage.

Just noticed watching the game here that Sligo have a star on their shirt above the crest. They haven't won 10 league titles or a Champions League last time I checked, so why the star?

The star was kept away from the crest when Jako were the suppliers but since Umbro came in it has been made smaller and put over the crest. Which in my opinion takes away from why it was put on the shirt in the first place as it was unique and original. Now it could mean anything as every poxy club has a star over their crest. I'm not supprised though.

Didnt the Fai have to write off 5 million(figure may no be correct) off the last Rte deal so Rte would show live games and MNS. Fai need all the money they get now so it will be intresting to see what Rte do going forward

5 million figure plucked from the FAI's ass no doubt.

The TV rights for frinedlies are still to be agreed. Assume MNS and live LOI games will be lumped with that.

Euro and World Cup qualifiers are all on the government's free-to-air list so RTE were always going to get them unless TV3 found a load of money.

Charlie Darwin
11/04/2013, 4:03 PM
Well they'd hardly be lumped in with the qualifying games since those are governed by free-to-air rules and there's no real competition from TV3.

Will the game be on RTE Player this evening, what time roughly .... there is a chance i'll miss it live, so that would be the next best thing. Not a chance of avoiding the score i'd say though

I watched it abroad and it wasn't blocked. Where were trying to watch it?

UK is my guess? I read somewhere it's not available in the UK cos the FAI's deal with Setanta includes UK broadcasting rights.

Just noticed "6C" in the web address.

When I watched it, these was a different set of two digits for the country I was in.

That'll hurt the coffers in Drogheda.

What have Setanta got against Drogheda?

Anyone else unable to get the RTE Player working yesterday?

adamd164
26/05/2013, 8:21 PM
Yeah it wasn't working for me either man.

Watched some of it on TV, Thomond is good for live games cos the camera gets a good vantage point high up in the stand.

Don't forget the new Rod Squad after the Drogs v DLK live game on Setanta on Monday night. Don't have this channel but I'll be at the match.

Will be interesting to get reports on both.

I thought there was meant to be a televised game every week this season? Hasn't been any in the past few weeks.

Are RTE not keeping up their end of the bargain?

adamd164
13/06/2013, 2:25 PM
They'd probably just cite extraneous circumstances - financial crisis, etc and say they couldn't fulfill it. Not like the FAI will come down on them for it anyway.

There was supposed to be 30 and they've shown 10 so far

Charlie Darwin

Presumably they'll be showing a few FAI Cup games too which will bump it up nearer 30. Can't see them actually fulfilling the full 30 though.

RTE will probably show a fair few games from the title run. Possibly more cup games than usual too.

I'd say they won't be far off the 30 at the end of the season.
