He had a double leg break almost a year ago and he's now targeting next August. Hence I worry also for Seamus.

Requires further surgery but doesn't sound too bad.
http://www.brentfordfc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/alan-judge-to-have-further-surgery-on-leg-injury-3662360.aspx

Further surgery in cases like Alan's is never out of the question and, once sufficient time has been allowed for nature to take its course, there are occasions where we need to provide a helping hand to gain that final few per cent. Alan's rehab and return to monitored training has gone well. However, in order to facilitate him returning to the outstanding levels that we know he's capable of, we're agreed that a procedure to stimulate further bone healing is the next and definitive step.

Terrible injury for him just as he was at the apex of his career to date and big clubs (I use the term loosely - perhaps bigger might be more apt) like Newcastle and Sheffield Wednesday were queuing up for his services. I remember one game where he ran the whole show against Wednesday, including being the deadball specialist. Fingers crossed.

brief update on Judge's recovery from Brentford's medical staff: https://www.brentfordfc.com/news/2017/june/med-science-summer-update/

Alan Judge’s lengthy recovery from a significant lower limb fracture injury is continuing and he is now seven-weeks post-surgery from what we hope will be the final surgical procedure that he will have to undergo. Alan is off his crutches, walking well and his review with the consultant last week placed him at exactly the expected point for this stage.

Alan now has a busy few weeks as he returns to Ireland in order to get married and, following his honeymoon, he will return to the Training Ground at the end of June where we hope to see further evidence of improved healing. Alan will then spend a block of reconditioning time in Philadelphia in July, working with Bill Knowles, the conditioning coach that we have worked successfully with in the past with other players. Following that, we hope Alan will be in a position to recommence his outdoor work and a graduated return to the squad.

He broke his leg eighteen months ago. Seems to be an exceptionally long recovery in this day and age. Suppose he's had a couple of setbacks.

Hallelujah! We badly need him. Either he or Liam Kelly, or both, will take over from Wes Hoolahan when he inevitably retires. Judge is a fine fine talent.

He certainly was before he was injured. Fingers crossed for him (and Coleman) that they'll be the same players when they come back. He's been out for about 18 months now. He'll also be 30 next year so only one World Cup campaign at most I am afraid :(

I like Jack Byrne and think he has a future in the Irish midfield. I also like the other two lads (Judge and Carey). There is plenty of skill to go around among the three of them and hopefully they will all get their opportunities to impress in the coming year.

Would the ball not just be flying over their heads even if there is some football in them ( With Martin O'Neill anyway .)

That is the big fear isn't it. The question which must be asked of MON if he stays in the job, is - is he going to adopt a totally different approach to the game (ie play the ball on the floor and bring in four or five lads, with the above three included, to make that work).
I suspect Martin will say he's in the results business and will adopt the best style of play he sees fit. At the end of the day we really have to flip the switch as a nation and play the game the way it is meant to be played.

Alan Judge first came on the radar of foot.ie 8 years ago http://foot.ie/threads/117593-Alan-Judge (both threads started by youngirish by the way) and still only has one cap. Shame as whenever I saw him play, usually for Brentford in the Championship, I thought he was excellent. Alas it looks like he might (assuming he recovers from his injury) be a late blossomer as regards caps like Wes H.

Too old at 29. Closer to death than birth. I'm now banking on Liam Kelly to fill that gaping hole we've had for a top level creative midfield maestro since Brady retired. Let's come back in 8 years to see how he gets on.

Yeah, he's definitely too old at 29. I heard he uses a walker to get around the supermarket these days to buy his adult diapers.
Brady retired? Would that be Liam or Robbie (Robbie retiring from the idea of replacing Wes in the creativity department)??

Liam Kelly's time definitely has arrived (ironically at a juncture where we don't have a game for six months or so). Kelly should have been utilized in the last campaign - he is very creative, holds onto the ball and generally gives the opposition problems. My lasting memory of him came at Old Trafford last season in the Cup where he was the equal (for the first hour or so) of any United player on the pitch. He has had a bit of a dip in form this season but he seems to be back on track now. With the level of creaivity among Whelan, Hendrick, O'Kane and perhaps Hourihane, not that high, Kelly is definitely a player who can provide a midfield platform for Ireland and one we cannot afford to ignore for very much longer.

I know you're being a little flippant but it's still worth noting that all but one of Wes Hoolahan's caps came when he was in his thirties, Jon Walters scored all but one of his fourteen goals after his 29th birthday, John Aldridge was thirty before he scored for us and is our joint fourth-highest scorer, while Robbie Keane racked up 29 international goals after turning 29. So if Judge does show better form than Kelly, Ronan, Browne, Manning etc. over the next twelve months, then he should be considered ahead of them for the next Euro qualifiers as he's probably got two, maybe three, campaigns left in his career.

22 minutes off the bench for Brentford's first game of the season, a comfortable 5-1 win for the bees at home to Rotherham. It was 3-0 when Judge came on. Hopefully he'll see a good bit of action in the coming weeks and months.

If Judge regains his pre-broken leg form, he is a must in the Irish set-up. One of the best players in the Championship and was about to be signed by Newcastle before the injury. Fingers crossed for him.

There's an awful lot of ACLs being torn lately. Curtis, Kerrigan, Judge, Colm Whelan. Others too maybe?

I had a quick google for other names and found this article instead - Ireland’s rate of ACL injuries among highest in the world because of GAA and rugby (https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/health/irelands-rate-of-acl-injuries-among-highest-in-the-world-because-of-gaa-and-rugby-42349971.html)

I have told this one here before, but it's a favourite story. I was watching Sacair Beo on TG4 many moons ago, and a commentator in full flow as Gaeilge constructed the amazing sentence, "Bhí sé amach anuraidh le anterior cruciate knee ligament injury." Some things transcend language. If we're especially prone to them (like German Shepherds get hip problems) then there must be an Irish term for them. (Google translate says gortú ligament glúine cruciate roimhe, which seems barely better than the commentator.)
