Shane Long to Leicester according to Sven, if he can fend off all the Premiership interest in the player.
http://www.dailymail...o=feeds-newsxml
Leicester are ready to table a £7million bid for Reading striker Shane Long as boss Sven Goran Eriksson bids to beat off competition from the Barclays Premier League for the prolific hitman.
Championship rivals West Ham had a bid totalling £7m for the Republic of Ireland forward rejected, but it seems Eriksson has persuaded the club’s wealthy Thai owners to stump up the cash for Long.
It will take Eriksson’s spending on new players to more than £15m and the spree is not yet over as the East Midlands club bid to return to the Premier League.
£7m bid: Long (left) has been targeted by Leicester
Eriksson is also interested in signing Rotherham forward Adam Le Fondre.
Newcastle and West Bromwich are also interested in Long, who scored 44 goals in 94 Championship starts for Reading, 24 of them last season

I'm probably behind the times but has he actually declared for us yet?
I have read from several sources that he has certainly declared for us, but it seems our Northern neighbours have designs on him. The sheer audacity!

fixed those two links for you
I wouldn't worry about the link on northernireland-mad, any football mad site (e.g. reading mad, celtic mad, liverpool mad, ireland mad, etc) displays the player stats, with all the site dressing for that club, regardless of their actual affiliation
here's Robbie Keane on Northern Ireland mad: http://www.northernireland-mad.co.uk/tottenham_hotspur/player/season_141/robbie_keane_1710/index.shtml
Or Conor Clifford with Reading: http://www.reading-mad.co.uk/chelsea/player/season_140/conor_clifford_90444/index.shtml

Thanks? I feel it is my duty to not let anyone forget about a period (and player) that can only be referred to as "The Shame." No matter what Trap does just remember it can almost certainly be worse.

Players to watch
• Rob Elliot: the Charlton goalkeeper has conceded just a solitary goal en route to the top of League One. But now the rub: manager Chris Powell faces losing his No1 before the end of the month, with Newcastle leading the chase. "I can't stop anyone from having ambitions to play higher because I've been there as a player in my past," admitted Powell.

Further info about Rob Elliott
Charlton have rejected an offer from Newcastle United for goalkeeper Rob Elliot, and have protested to the Premier League about the Magpies' conduct.
Newcastle made a formal written bid of £100,000 for the 25-year-old custodian on Wednesday, which was immediately rejected by Charlton.
"The offer was rejected within minutes, and Newcastle then confirmed they no longer had an interest in the player. "
I'll reference the sources later, but there were a few reports during the week that Arsenal want Kevin Doyle to replace Bendtner.
His peno miss last week wouldnt have helped his chances. Might be something in it, as Wenger needs to get players in quick but doesnt seem to be having much luck so far.
I presume this Rob Elliott character is eligible for Ireland? Dont think ive heard of him before now?

Not familiar with him myself, although I do note that the 'international' section of his Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Elliot) states very simply and forthrightly:
International
Elliot made his international debut for the Republic of Ireland Under 19 team.

More talk of Doyle to Arsenal again, but very unlikely.

Duffy and Clifford but I suppose both those will be loans so may not happen just yet, but will be interesting ones, Championship for both probably.
With young guys like McCann, Rooney, O'Brien, Brady, Mason, Kendrick having started well this season, that division will be worth keeping an eye on, also O'Brien in the side at West Ham, Clarke at Blackpool, Garvan featuring for Palace and Dicker stepping up with Brighton, you never know, a couple of more options will hopefully emerge.

Clifford mentioned Hamburg a few weeks ago. Chelsea have some sort of exchange deal with them similar to Man United's with Antwerp.

Villa have their captain Petrov, the young and promising Delph and Bannan as well as the potentially talented Stephen Ireland competing for 2 midfield spots at the moment. They've hogg as well making up the numbers. I can't see them wanting another and if they did I don't honestly see Gibson winning the battle against them for a starting spot.

I honestly think half the managers in the EPL don't have a clue.
They automatically think cos ferguson brought gibson through the ranks that he must be a gem of some sort. If i were a premiership manager and based on anything I have seen of him on those games, I would not be looking to bring him in.

Makoun too, with Clark occasionally filling in.
Having said that McLeish has been looking for an athletic midfielder for sometime - linked to Parker, Barton etc. Petrov rarely has 90 minutes in him anymore, Delph is young and Makoun may get sold on. Hogg won't make it. Bannan and Ireland wouldn't suit that role. So I can see why they're looking at Gibson - even though Darron rarely appears particularly athletic.

Nope even if you hyphenate at the end to try and somewhat qualify what you said the whole statement then makes no sense.
LIke any good point well made, you use the TDT approach, the subject i.e. looking for an athletic midfielder, you give reasons as to why that is the subject i.e. the reasons why he is looking for an athletic midfielder given those currently at his disposal/available, you then conclude your point by saying "so i can see why they're looking at Gibson......
If your qualification at the end is your actual conclusion then you wouldn't or at least shouldn't have bothered with that paragraph and just left a blank.

The statement makes complete sense. There are two conclusions. First - Villa are looking for an athletic type midfielder which Gibson is by reputation at least. He'd widely be considered to have an all-round game, can play defensively and burst forward and hit a decent pass. That's a objective assessment of why Villa could be linked to him.
The second conclusion is he isn't particularly athletic. That's a subjective assessment of his actual abilities. It was a throwaway FNAR FNAR. It wasn't particularly funny. But it doesn't invalidate the previous conclusion since they are not contradictory as one is Villa's possible view and the other is my own.
An example: If I'd said 'Oxford University are looking for an O'Shea to give sentence construction seminars, for x reasons, so they've been linked to paul_oshea' but then ended the par with 'but paul_oshea rarely constructs a good sentences' then it would still make perfect sense. :)
I don't know who I'm more miffed at - you, Paul, for provoking me, or me for taking the bait and spelling that out.

Well if they were I would hope an institution such as Oxford would at least get the structure, semantics and syntax right if they were looking at me....
I still stick by what I said, you started off with Villa looking for an athletic player, finished with thats why you can see they are looking at Darron. You're almost as bad as geysir trying to refute it. :)

Astonishing. Anyway no wonder you're sticking with your view, you totally ignored my explanation. As my previous post step-by-stepped, that is not simply what I said but, hey, I had a go at spelling it out. Ultimately I'm glad you ignored the explanation as it might result in you altering your, eh, inimitable writing style. And this place gets too boring for that.

Attack the post not the poster. SVD. Come on you know the rules :)
And I don't know what step-by-stepped(in the usage above) means either.
Anyway as you say lets not take over this thread about whether or not you think Gibson is an Athletic footballer or not, or whether villa are potentially buying him as an Athletic footballer or not, whether or not he (ever/never) appears to be this type of player and just focus as you rightly say on actual transfer rumours.
Has anything come of the Doyle one, the fact that McCarthy came out the exact same day as this broke suggests there was some truth in it or someone was potentially interested and the papers got it wrong. By all accounts though Mccarthy isn't going to sell. Which leads me to the next point I've been dwelling about, a lot of people seem to have this c2 year window where a footballer is at their peak and thats it, then after that they are over the hill almost, doyle is now 27, to me to fit in with this belief he would be reaching his peak and has only a couple/possibly 3 years at the top, and therefore if he is ever to make it(not exactly sure how we define this) he needs to move now.

Forum rules or sentence rules? And I don't think I did attack you, but apologies if you feel offended.

It's just 'step-by-step' in verb form. I probably made it up and, before you or anyone says, I'm sure it's prescriptively incorrect. Ah well.

This is the first time you've come (relatively) close to representing what I said correctly, much obliged. :)

Doyle would have to push for the move and, problem is, he still wouldn't command a regular first-team place in a big club (top four) right now. A stellar season at Wolves could change that.

Doyler could be helped by the fact that he hasn't been worn down by the daily grind in Italy since he was 15/16. Plus he's another one of our gems who isn't lightning fast, which will help stave off obvious decline that bit more.
He wouldn't get a look in at United, City, Chelsea, but outside of that there isn't a whole lot of difference, Arsenal perhaps he could struggle at, but he would be capable at any of the others, and numerous European clubs if he so wished.
