Not everyone's cup of tea but possibly a new Slipknot album in the works for 2011. Will be interesting to see what direction they take after the death of their drummer last year.

The bassist died, no?
I like that new Strokes song - total Is This It? which makes me feel the album might be a bit straw clutching. But decent song nonetheless.
If no one has heard the new PJ Harvey album they should go do it soon as possible - it's just a little bit brilliant. Really enjoying the new Mogwai too, though I'm a big fan of pretty much everything they've done.
The new Strokes song took a while to sink in but I really like it. It is very Is This It? but I think it's different enough to sound fresh. Plus Is This It? is one of my favourite records.
The PJ Harvey album is immense. It's been panned by the press (which in PJ Harvey terms means it's gotten average reviews) but I think it's the best she's made in years.

I've pretty much hated everything PJ Harvey has ever done, but I did like the first single off the new album, so I may be prepared to give it a chance

Totally agree. Don't understand the criticisms at all - it's such an enveloping, interesting album but totally lovely album. She's struggled to walk the line between experimentation and total listenability in recent releases but she's bang on with this one. Hanging In The Wire, In The Dark Places and Words That Maketh The Murder are some of her finest songs yet.
And Happy Monday everybody - new Radiohead album this Saturday (http://www.thekingoflimbs.com/). Those jokers....I'm pretty excited, it'll be the first time in years I've heard a new Radiohead record without having checked out any live bootlegs of new material.

The Pretender is pretty good too but the accompanying album was total dreck. The scuzzier sound does remind me a little of their debut and the video does make me smile though.

what an overrated bunch of complete wasters i'm sorry i'm sorry i can't even continue my pathetic wind-up. in the modern internet style of emphasizing your statements by putting a full-stop after each of your words in a sentence i. cannot. wait. i predict a more... symphonic approach going on johnny greenwood's latest musical creations! bring it yo
is it just me or is anyone else dying for The Bends II? Dont get me wrong, I love all their stuff but would love a return to hard, distorted rock with melodies. They just do it so well.

Don't think anyone has any idea how it's going to sound. Allegedly only eight tracks though, so could be pretty sprawling, possibly symphonic as you say.

I think In Rainbows, at least in parts, is the closest you'll ever get to it. I'm OK (Computer) with that though, as much as I love The Bends.

Can't fookin wait either. I'm hoping for something darker than In Rainbows, preferably heavy and sprawling in the mould of These Are My Twisted Words/Where You End and I Begin/Dollars and Cents etc.
Don't want the Bends II. The Bends is quality but with the exception of Street Spirit and isn't as intriguing or exciting as OK Computer onwards, and I rarely go back to it.

while i agree in general - i would just love a repeat. One of the best rock albums ever in my opinion. (calling it a rock album does it a disservice but compared to the rest of their stuff...). Where i do differ from you, I still listen to the Bends a lot.

I remember reading a rant in one of the Sundays a few years ago about how "Eire" is a made-up term used by ignorant English people. Obviously this person hadn't read the constitution.
King of Limbs is a little underwhelming so far. I'm not the biggest fan of their recent work but I was expecting to get a little more from it.

Same here. i love the Bends, Black Star is possibly my favourite ever Radiohead track. But the thing i love about Radiohead is that each album brings something different, and if they went for the Bends II, they'll have run out of ideas. Going to listen to it this morning....

I'm a little underwhelmed so far but it's definitely growing on me. Actually I think it's really quite interesting, my only real gripe is it sounds like a Thom/Jonny record. I'd like to hear more 'band'.

Liking the Radiohead album. While it's not going to change the world, it will comfortably maintain their credibility and it is really quite beautiful in parts (esp. Codex, Lotus Flower, Separator). It's definitely not overly dark or rife with panic/paranoia, and I'm not feeling much anger (love the aggression in parts of Hail to the Thief) but maybe their mellowing with age. Seems like the obvious, but well executed, next step.
Anyway, keeps this fan very content. Now when's the tour?

Excellent album. I love Uberlin and Mine Smells like Honey. Dont see them as a band in decline myself. Their last album ACCELERATE was very good too though the previous one AROUND THE SUN was poor. I thought UP and REVEAL were brilliant and underated. They are also the best band live I have seen...Although a friend of mine thinks they have been in decline since DOCUMENT though I dont agree. The only negative is I feel Michael Stipe's voice is not as good as it was,a bit hoarse, all the smoking catching up on him.

The first R.E.M album I listened to was "Green" and they were already on a more commercial trajectory. Personally, I felt the band began to disappoint with every release beyond that point although partly arrested that decline with "Accelerate".
I only started listening to "Murmur" and "Reckoning" over the last year or so and absolutely love both albums.
I've a huge interest in the IRS stuff currently which spans from "Murmur" to "Document".
What strikes me about those first two albums is how well they stand up today considering when they were recorded. There's not many albums recorded in the early 80's that escaped the gratuitous "Synths" treatment.
Apparently, the band deliberately wanted the sound as stripped down as possible.
Apparently, there's a best of the IRS years album entitled "I feel fine........best of the IRS years" which I'm going to track down.

I comepletely agree with your friend I have to say. They only made sporadically good music since that album. Automatic For The People is probably their best overall record since then. Murmer and particularly Fables of the Reconstruction are my favourite REM albums. They were just awesome back then.

Picked up Beady Eye's album ahead of the gig last night, and Foo Fighter's offering.
Foo Fighter's is a lot heavier than anything else they've done, but well worth a listen. If you buy the cd (fcuk you iTunes) they've shredded the original master tapes they used to record and included a portion of it in each CD case.
Like a lot have said here, I'm pleasantly surprised by Beady Eye. It's a really laid back, chilled out Rolling Stones kind of an album. Was at the gig in the Olympia last night (they're playing tonight as well) and it was a great gig. Crowd loved Liam, and he loved the attention. Doesn't seem to have changed his clothes since Definitely Maybe, mind!
I had a seat in the upper level, and there was a bit of drama in front of me. A blonde woman came into the seats just before the gig started, and was clearly hammered, barely able to walk properly. Anyway, I took no real notice, she was in a seat two rows straight down from me. She sat down at one point, and the back of her chair broke off, and she went straight through. She was there with two guys and another woman, so presumably two couples. One of the blokes straight away started complaining to a bouncer, and it looked like he was trying to get another seat for them, but the guy was having none of it. Meanwhile the blonde kept sitting down in the seat, and going straight through every time, must have happened 4 times at least! I shouldn't laugh, but it was funny. Eventually the bouncer made some sort of arrangements for them, and they all moved on.

The entire upper circle was hammered. I blame the proximity to the bar.

Well the first album and and TCATS had their heavy moments as did One by One. By far the best offering since There is Nothing Left To Lose.
As regards the piece of Master tape, I was wondering what that was and checking my cd case and it seems I've lost it. :(
