View Full Version : best & worst e/l ground
The atmosphere at the RSC has improved in recent times, getting bigger crowds the last 2 seasons and the IBSC lads in the top corner of stand are singing away and waving massive flags so things have improved.I agree about the ground though, too far back from pitch and no terracing or covering apart from the stand. That doesn't help with the atmosphere either. The chairman was talking about either buying the RSC off City Council or building a brand new stadium a few weeks ago but things have gone quiet on that front since then.Apparently we can't get grants from FAI or UEFA to improve the ground as don't own the ground so the RSC hasn't changed much since it opened.

Flood lights (the lux value, how bright they are)..... I have to say the cross is the best i think, Buckley park a few years back was good aswell, but been there since and it wasn't as good. Dalyeris poor enough aswell, Tolka is better.
It really stands out on eL weekly .... that is half the problem with the quality of footage at times aswell.
To get a licence you must have 500 Ev (88 readings on FAI grid thingy)
For UEFA club comps (intertoto) you must have 800 Ev point at fixed cameras and 500 Ev at mobile cameras
It is 1000 Ev / 700 Ev for Champions League qualifiers.

Ok having been to all 20 EL grounds at one point or another over the past few seasons here is my two pence worth.
Best in terms of Spectator facilities
Premier
1/ Turners Cross ( rapidly becoming an all seater ground. Once the shed terracing goes it will be perfect)
2/ Dalymount (for the Jodi Stand side)
3/ Flancare Park ( one of the best grounds outside Dublin)
4/ Tolka Park ( for the new stand )
5/ Regional Sports Centre Waterford
And for the record when the ground opened back in 1993. There was no stand and no seats. We had to stand on planks over the long jump pit.
There were grass mounds surrounding the pitch. It has improved dramatically. The removal of the seats opposite the stand has been a retrograde step, which is why it only ranks 5th out of 8.
6/ Brandywell ( it's only half a ground )
7/ Richmond Park ( nice stand despite obscured view thanks to Floodlight pylons. Shag all leg room in the seats though which is why it is ranked 7th.
The Shed needs an overhaul and there are no spectator facilities behind the other goal... nice chip van though. The Camac side is tight and has no room for further expansion)
8/ United Park Drogheda( Not possible to put spectators behind one of the goals cause of lack of room. And it has no room for expansion. Main stand has a slightly obscured view. Since the clubhouse has been restricted to home season ticket holders, one of the rare attractions of the ground has been denied to the visiting supporter.)
First Division
I won't bother ranking these grounds except to mention the best few.
Terryland as it currently is would be the best
Buckley Park , Finn Park and Century Homes Park would be next in terms of facilities for spectators.
Oriel Park and Carlisle Grounds would be next
Belfield Park comes next
And the bottom few would be The Showgrounds ( as I remember from mylast visit some years back)
St.Colman's Park has a nice clubhouse
Station Road, Newbridge nice spectator facilities even though the pitch leaves a lot to be desired.
Pike Rovers Sportsground, is a fine non-league ground. No reason to denigrate it. It is a non-League ground however and that should never be overlooked.
By far the worst would be St.Mel's Park, but Athlone are doing the decent thing and building a new stadium.
who are the IBSC?
Independent Blues Supporters Club. They were formed a few years ago to improve atmosphere, organise buses to away games and they do player of the month awards as well. They're the do the singing and wave the Ultra style flags before the game

Even so i dont think citys floodlights meet the required specification for european football.

Yeah AFAIK no club does.
Tommy; yeah I like Drogheda too but with nothing behiond either goal didn't want to praise it too highly. That and because the ****s want to charge 15 quid in to stand in the barn...

didnt sky sports have to give eL clubs money for flood lights or something years ago or am i way off !
Yeah, I think the story there was that EU broadcasting regulations meant that Sky had to pay compensation to eL clubs because they were broadcasting live English soccer into Ireland. There was an argument over it and the payments stopped if my memory is right. Now that the FAI in bed with Murdoch and Co., I doubt it'll be mentioned again

Haven't they fixed that now?
The problem was that the wattage was too low, but thats been sorted out now, I think.
i thought we were getting a totally new flood lighting system in the years to come.....
Somethings that matchs Musgrave Parks system.

i take it they weren't around in 2001/2002 when waterford were playing in the 1st division.
because i went 2 a few of those matches and there was little or no vocal support for the blues, and very low attendance.
isnt it a shame that a club like waterford with such a rich footballing history that they have to play top flight football to get some decent support?
It used by fairly quiet there allright and like most National League clubs our attendance depends on how well we're doing.Even in division 1 we were getting reasonable crowds though with a regular crowd of maybe 1000 but since we've got back to the Premier it been more like 3000 or more for big games.Games against Cork,Shels and Bohs etc are a lot more appealing than Athlone or Monaghan on a winters evening!

Best is Dalymount. Good atmosphere and the Jodi Stand is great. Always like going out there.
Worst has to be Bray. Its just a pain in the arse going there. Little dump is what is it full of little knacker kids throwing coins at away fans
Agree that the Jodi stand in Dalymount is miles ahead of anything else in the league. Other favourites would be Tolka(When the Riverside is packed with Pats fans there's nothing like it.) Turners Cross is also v.good, and the progress made in Longford over the past few seasons is nothing short of remarkable, a real credit to them. Their main stand is second only to the Jodi. Worst ground I've been in was Athlone, unbelieveably awful, but that was circa 1996. Haven't been in Sligo recently either, but that was fairly poor. I beleive the new stand is impressive though. Half of the Brandywell is great(but apparently that's all you need for an A licence.)
As regards our own ground, Richmond has it's faults as mentioned elsewhere(poles blocking view, cramped seats, rubbish view from the shed(Take down that fence) For athmosphere on a good night though, it's right up there.

" For athmosphere on a good night though, it's right up there."
indeed i like richmond but its a while since i've been there still friday night shud be a good crowd up from drogheda
buddy of mine played an fai cup match in a place called "tra na locha"(spelling ??) in donegal.he was playing for st james gate of dublin against a local team and it was a replay after a draw in dublin.
there was loads of needle involved and there was a big hostile crowd.he said the dressing rooms were miles from the pitch and you had to walk right through the oppositions supporters to get to the pitch !!!!!!!.he said they got pelted with chips, burgers and whatever came to hand.just imagine rovers playing a match up there :D
That would be Fanad United he would have been playing against. Its right at the top of Donegal, ground right beside the sea and its always raining and freezing.
As you can guess, thats there reason for having the dressing rooms so far away from the ground.
