Magic. Haven't heard that one in a while. High time I reacquainted myself with 'Automatic...'
31 years. R.E.M. is older than I am. They leave one heck of a catalogue to savor anyway.

Only just listening to it again this week and it really is something. A much maligned album in my Top 10. I know it's in my Top 10 but whne I'm asked I never say it and without doubt has had probably more of an effect on my musical life than say Loveless and The Colour and the Shape and I would never hesitate to mentioning them.
"Monty..." still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up on end. Everytime I've listened to it the moment that the chord change kicks in on the mandolin and the drums kick in makes me happy that music exists and I discovered it.
I know you might say "Duh" to statements like that but I know so many people who actually don't give a crap about music. Srsly.
Another thing you should reacquaint yourself with is Up. REM's masterpiece. People talk about Green or Out Of Time; but the beauty of Up is something to behold.

Agree with you about ' UP ' Great album. Would be better if the first song ' Airportman' wasnt on it. Also the fourth song ' Hope' is crap. The other songs are all brilliant especially 'Falls to climb' and 'Diminished ' .

I would in essence agree with you about removing those songs but one of the greatest things about albums us that it makes you appreciate the greatness of the likes of Lotus etc. It's part of the memory and the joy of the discovery of those songs that mean something you and that makes so called inferior songs integral to that journey and experience.

In December 1977, H Wiley Hitchcock said during The Phonograph and Our Musical Life conference that "The record industry has been making records so perfect...that you lose any sight of the fallibility of humans...Such recordings are a fiction: they're too perfect, so when you hear a concert you are almost let down by what you hear."
He was talking about sound and not content but it could equally apply to that.
