this is from the View from the touchline website:

Cavan Town’s remarkable run in the FAI Junior Cup continued with a sensational extra time victory at home to top Connaught side Galway Hibernians and their exploits have now taken them to the quarter finals of the most prestigious competition in junior football. In an evenly contested match which saw Cavan take the lead early on with a well struck effort from Brendan Smith, only to see Galway level matters before the break. Smith was on hand mid way through the second half to restore the advantage for Cavan, but once again Galway equalized to bring the tie to extra time where a Michael Smith penalty put away in confident fashion put his side in the last eight, and only one match away from the FAI Senior Cup draw should they qualify for the semi finals. Carrick Rovers will be hopeful of joining them when they host top Wexford side New Ross Celtic next Sunday.

, heard North End looked very average in beating a poor Carrick side on the day.

Don't know where all this talk of North End being an 'ordinary side' comes from. Having seen both games in Clonmel and Carrick over the weekend I would say NE were easily the pick of the 4 teams. They have some very nice footballers in their squad (1st goal yesterday the best goal I've seen in a long while) a decent midfield and defence and a very solid goalkeeper - excellent yesterday and on another time I've seen him play for Oscar Traynor team against Waterford.
As for 'Town and Carrick - I think all their lines are weak / weakened for varying reasons. Both defences are very unsure - changed back 4s again which is leading to lack of understanding and authority by a dominant figure. Town's midfield has never replaced Paul Scully - John Shanahan continues to be played in defence which makes no sense. Comerford - haven't seen what the fuss was about. Carrick's midfield is dependant on Wayne Fitzgerald - young Burke is a good player but a little lightweight for centre of mid. Up front for Town David McGrath too looks a bit lost on his own. Was Barry Ryan injured? Carrick's starting pair are not of the calibre of previous years either and not up to the top level.
So really a poor weekend for the 'neighbours' - Carrick will need a bit of a lift to get themselves in the winning mentality for MJC - a relatively favourable run should see them at least reach final to face Pike or Michaels. Town are just concentrating on local trophies now and I suppose wondering what needs to be done to get the team back to a level where they can challenge for the 'big ones' - the manager in fairness took over a sliding ship so he can't take all the blame - what next tho'?

I was at both games aswel and i can assure you North End will not trouble St Michaels as much as they did Carrick and also Athenry were more than impressive in defece, Im not slating North end one bit, their 1st goal was a great finish but did you not see the rest of the game the where carrick pushed and pushed but couldnt get the break through if half of carrick chances were taken it could of being 7-3 and we didnt play well. NE are goodbunch of lads they had a good few scoops in the pub afterwards and i wouldn't have a bad word to say about them.

Agreed Michaels should get through but to say ye had a rake of chances is pushing it - ye didn't look like scoring (apart from Wayne Fitz shot off bar in first half) until keeper rashly conceded penalty then NE were reduced to 10. After that it was just lumping the ball in from not much beyond half way line and hoping for the best - 1 or 2 at most could have yielded goals. Granted a bit of luck and ye could have got thru but not to be.
As for next weekend - what's yer attitude towards Munster Senior cup - will ye put strongest side out?

Does not matter now but Carrick also hit the post in the second half, JJ has two good oppertunities before he scored. Keith Walsh should have had a pen in the first half and if the ball ran for Carrick in the penalty box they would have scored at least two in the opening half. Also photographs of the incident that lead to the North End pen clearly show the ref got it badly wrong. Michaels will eat them alive next day.

Carrick Rovers 3-4 New Ross Celtic.
All goals in second half. Carrick led 1-0 and then 2-1 with 17 minutes to go. New Ross then scored 3 in 10 mins before Rovers got one back with 5 mins left and could have equalised especially in the last minute with a couple of corners being cleared off the line. A cracking game ended in disappointment for Rovers but a decent run overall! Well done to New Ross Celtic and the best of luck for the rest of it!

Balla took the lead just before the break, from a peno scored by dunphy. Balla started the better and have a few chances but they
didn't take them. Springfield scored against the run of play from a corner kick. The player took it well. This chance the game around.
But balla up there game. Frank Lee scored to make it 2-1 to balla. It came for a corner dunphy to lee and head it home. Up step
dermot fitz to score the pick of the bunch. Cut in from the wing nut meg two players a long the buy line, made it look like he was
going to pull the ball back and just roll it in to the front post. Balla have an our peno but it was pull over the bar. After the match
balla had sandwiches and chicken let out in rashers and they didn't come in bad carry on. And there side line were kill each our.

Ballynanty 3 - 1 Springfield.

Game of two halfs really ... I thought!. Bally had the fair share of possession during the first half but really only threatened and tested our keeper once aside from the penalty.
We could/should easily avoided conceeding the penalty, indecision between centre half & keeper in deciding who should clear the ball lead to Bally striker nipping in and attempting to round our keeper who had no choice but to bring him down to avoid a tap in. No qualms here - defo spotter!. Well taken aswell-down to keepers bottom right, he had no chance - peno was inch perfect. In 1down at half time but knew if we got one we could pip them.
Second half we owned majority of the possesesion and scored with header from corner. 1-1 back in the game!.
Not going to say we lost game cos of officials but it certainly does help when their hometown officials(cant understand why Fai didnt bring in some from say Tipp or Clare), and when u have the home team on first name terms with Referee ('Robbie this and Robbie that'') - it does help a bit.
Their tall striker scored with header from corner(see below) . . . but my opinion he shouldnt have been on the pitch. Prior to this he levelled one of our centre halfs with a blatant elbow challanging for a header. Defo a red card, but hometown ref only gave a yellow. Linesman nearest had perfect view but never spoke up!!! - perhaps it was the home support behind him he was frightened of.
Couple of mins later Bally got a corner which wasnt a corner (came back of Bally striker after our keeper block at his feet). This is where their tall striker scored. Some say it was 50/50 whether ball crossed the line but my opinion it did!.
Bally last goal could have been avoided, poor defending on the bye-line, which allowed their sub ghost into our box and finish at near post.
Bally did miss(bad miss) a spotter with 5mins to go, but game was over at this stage. Springfield had at this stage resigned themselves to the loss and also were sick to death of the tendancy of the officials to side with the home team on decisions.

Finally, best of Luck to Bally in the next round.

I think balla are a great price at 5/2 im sure a few in limerick will have a go at that price, cant see new ross getting to the semi final st micks look like they have the look of the draw this year, any prices on the athenry and pike rovers game that will be some game.

Lads, for all of ye wondering about the quality of Wexford junior football and in particular New Ross Celtic. The rivalry between Celtic and North End goes back years but it was lost a bit when North End were relegated a couple of years ago. They played each other last Sunday for the first time since North End cam back up and Celtic won 1-0 at North End, a great result. Celtic have won the Wexford league the last 4 years in a row but have had no form ouside of Wexford for a good few years. They were in the final of the FAI Junior in 1994 but got hammered by Clonmel Town 5-1, but they did beat Fairview in the semi that year (once the Donaghmede saga was put to bed!). They won the Leinster Junior in 1983 though. Celtic have excellent facilities and I would strongly fancy them to beat Cavan and reach the semis and then you never know! All in all Wexford football is on the up, a lot to do with Mick Wallace it has to be said, and they won the Oscar Traynor last year.
