Shelbourne must really be wishing they'd sold him to Djurgarden when they had the chance. I'm sure they didn't even get a third of the price they were offered last time.

Does anyone think he will be successful at Cardiff,i always rated him and he has played some good games in Europe, it will be interesting to see if he starts or not,and will probably make the Ireland squad with the news of doyle's injury

Why does he have to "prove himself" in the Championship.
atm clubs are accepting fee's of around €200-300k for the best players in the league. If Byrne scores about 20 goals next season an EL club could easily demand up to €1m for the next player to go and score 20-25 goals in the LOI if he's at a young enough age. It'll basically be showing if you can do it in the EL then you can do it in the Championship, at least. Nobody's going to risk big fee's until more players start to prove themselves. All it takes is Byrne to go and do it imo.

To be honest I don't think he'll do that well. Although he was the top goalscorer for the last 4 years in the eircom League I still don't think that he's the best striker in the league. As long as he doesn't start taking penalties he may have a chance though! ;)

Cardiff really need a striker, if Chopra gets injured they have problems. Dave Jones on Byrne: "He's scored a lot of goals at the level he's played, can he do it at this level? We'll find out soon."
Kevin Campell has yet to score this season, they have a few young strikers but none has really made an impression. Unless they sign somebody else soon Byrne should get plenty game time to prove himself.

His main problem is that he is quite similar to Steven Thompson. So the choice seems to be between him and Byrne, partnering Chopra.Would having two similar players like Byrne and Thommo up front together work?
eirebhoy
15/01/2007, 11:34 PM
I wouldn't say he's similar to Thompson. Maybe in stature but Byrne is a lot more mobile. I think they could work well together.
Soper
15/01/2007, 11:37 PM
All the Cardiff fans seem to think they're the same.I didn't see much of Thompson last season, but he was much more mobile this season than he was at Rangers in the games I saw.Still, I think Byrne will play, be it at Chopras or Thompsons expense, because they're both playing brutally at the moment.

interesting that sheffield utd paid £2m for a striker from helsingborg, luton shelton a 20 year old jamaican. this lends credence to the argument of trying to keep players in ireland til an older age

I don't rate Byrne at all. His scoring record is unbelievable but he misses too many easy oppertunities for me

I noticed that too. 2m for a Jamaican international who only scored 10 goals in Sweden looks like stupid money as that league not in great shape. Then again West ham tried to pay 10m for england U21 international with a few months Premiership experience.

Pete...Would I be antagonising if I sparked off a discussion about George O'Callaghan moving to Ipswich on this thread, in the Ireland section? "He should be in the next Ireland squad IMO":D

He is a decent player but not worth £2 million. There is a few cases of players leaving Sweden for Britain in the last few seasons who were all highly regarded as top players in Sweden but have failed to make the grade in Britain; namely Andreas Johannsen (Wigan), Tobias Hysen (Sunderland) and Björn Runström (Fulham). All went to the UK on "big money" deals so if we compared their performance to recent ex. LOI players, ie Doyle (Reading) and Murphy (Sunderland), its pretty obvious that LOI clubs are selling themselves short and Swedish clubs are the bee-knees when it comes to transfer dealings.

The Swedish league is very over-rated at the moment. Their recent European record is much worse than ours yet the Swedish league would be much better thought of.

This is the big move for the EL. If he's as successful in division 1 as Doyle then fee's for EL will increase a lot.
I think he can be a successful as Doyle. He was scoring more goals in Ireland than Doyle and is now reaching the peak of his career.

I can guarantee you Jason Byrne is not as good as Doyle. I would be surprised ih he made it in the Premiership but he is well capable of making a Championship career for himself. He cannot take penalties & he can crack badly under pressure. He won't create much for others as is pure striker.
Cardiff have not bought him for the reserves so i expect to see him in match day squad fairly quickly.

he wont make the grade, he is too much of a bottler, i never seen a player bottle it so much in europeon games

im looking forward to seeing him play,i know its a massive step in class from where he usually plays but he cant do any worse than the strikers we got now can he
another supergretna i think. i mean, southend are MASSIVE opposition compared to deportivo.
The reason i think he shoulld do ok in the Championship is that defences not so great & if he plays he will get enough chances to miss some & score some.

Maybe should rephrase that...How much would the average Irish football fan know about the Welsh League?? Not a lot I'd say. Sure I'll be honest here, I'd struggle to name half the teams....Barry Town, TNS....eh......

Apparently his registration won't be completed quickly enough for him to feature tonight against Spurs. However, the Irish U-19 player, Simmonds, who they have on loan from Chelsea, will be in the squad.

The Cardiff official site describes him as an "English youth international" here: http://www.cardiffcityfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/LatestDetail/0,,10335~965507,00.html (http://www.cardiffcityfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/LatestDetail/0,,10335%7E965507,00.html)
But, from his profile on the Chelsea site here: http://www.chelseafc.com/page/TheReservesProfiles/0,,10268~900398,00.html (http://www.chelseafc.com/page/TheReservesProfiles/0,,10268%7E900398,00.html)
He was a former England youth international but has opted to play for the Republic of Ireland Under 19s.
Jason Byrne has just basically scored the winner against Wolves on his debut!

Good man himself. It's sad that it's only now he becomes eligable for ROI. but that's the way it is unfortunately. Re: Stephen Kenny keeping Dunfermline up= better than winning the league with Derry.
Give it two or three more years: we're going in the right direction.

I'm really confident that I can do it over here - I've scored at every level I have played at before and will back myself to do it again. I'm still only 28 and not past it!
when did he score at senior international level?
btw cheeky git that jones' fella! how in any shape or form is 75K a gamble. like seriouslly. even if he was crap.

Maybe the gamble was on paying anything to Ollie - i.e. if he'd waited a little while he might have got Byrne on a free but risked him going to another club. So it wasn't the £100k+ sterling that was rumoured. How much of the fee is owed to Bray, 40% or so?
