Who was over the team when they won 2 years ago? if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Oh and Leeroybrown, unfortunately I didn't say young single lads, I just said 'single lads' - so I actually do need that extra hours sleep. ;)

Lads i have nothing against PJ Kinsella but that man does not have a clue about football. Dont get me wrong the man has great interest and dedication but been appointed as manager of the oscar traynor team is a joke.
Was he the only applicant or do the desmond league commitee even give a **** anymore about this competition. Were any managers in the league contacted can any one tell me?
I'm a big follower of the league having a team to represent us in this competition and that we should have all our best players on it. But if the likes of Pj is in charge, if i was a manager i would be telling my players not to bother playing for the oscar traynor and risk injury if this thing is a joke. A weekend off would do them alot better.
For god sake we won the thing a few years ago. Get someone good in and we can try win it again. Christy Purcell wouldnt be a bad start.
Its just my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fair enough omarbarksdale, my bad...Good point made in regard to managing the Oscar Traynor side, as with everything really. As for anyone applying for the role I've no idea, perhaps many of the managers feel they have enough to contend with at their club without adding to their workload. As Gearysfan says though, the League should have a decent side to represent it and the players should be made to feel its something worth aiming for. To represent your county/league should be regarded as an a achievement.

Too right lads. With respect for PJ Kinsella, he loves the game and we need more people like that but Rudy didn't get a run out for the Fightin' Irish til the last game of the season for a reason. Y'know? I'm just saying this is something we should take seriously as a league with a good reputation over the last few years.

I don't think you will see much players interested playing with PJ as manager, players will play only if it's not a waste of time and is taken serious.
It has to be someone will a good football head on them, and there are plenty out there in alot of the clubs. People who were either previous managers or players... It's a pity that the heart and pride has gone out of representing your League! Maybe more players that haven't played in the Oscar Traynor in previous years should be given a call up, players who might appreciate it a bit more!! (not saying that ALL current/previous players who played didn't appreciate it)

I agree Gearysfan PJ is a grand fella but would'nt be up to the standard needed for the oscar traynor job. But reading the observer over the last few weeks I noticed the deadline for applications kept being extended so the interest cant have been great. Its alarming the amount of players that dont get involved in coaching when there playing days are over, last year newcastle and abbeyfeale had to pay a manager for the season. These 2 clubs would have a realistic chance of winning a trophy each season and they still struggled to get somebody to take on the job. Its a warning to every club in the desmond league that this could be a problem going forward in the next couple of years. Its a long season which takes up a lot of time and commitment and the same lads wont keep coming back year after year.

It is a shame to see players not stay involved in a coaching capacity once they've finished playing. I was suprised to see both the clubs mentioned by last man back having to pay for a manager. I believe that neither of them would want to do that again, nor would any club. It is a long season and perhaps rather than one man being in overall charge some teams may look to have 2 or 3 ex/players run the side. Would be good if current players or ex players got involved with coaching the youth or under age sides, I know there is still a big committment but that may give some people the bug to carry on and manage junior sides.

As regards the Interleague Jnr team I would suggest Noel Murphy as a really true candidate. He's very highly regarded and would be well received by the top players in the league. Furthermore I don't think he's involved with a premier side as a manager this year. It's just a suggestion!

Shannonside 3 - 2 Newcastle West Rovers. Shannonside missed a number of chances in both halves, the game was closer than perhaps it should have been. Both sides played good football. Shannonside took the lead within the first two minutes, added the second shortly after. NCW Rovers pulled one back with a great strike from outside the box, giving the keeper no chance. Shannonside added a third before the break and missed numreous chances, the game could have been over there and then. Credit to NCW Rovers who continued to push a got the second with 10 to go. Again a hatful of chances missed by Shannonside in the second half to make well and truly sure.

Ya Askeaton were understrength, missing a lot of the first teamers and had just the one substitute. They'll feel hard done by too as they matched Abbey for good sections of the game and went 1-0 up. Abbey took their chances well in fairness, so well done.
Shannonside did get off to a good start last year but if there's any team to keep their heads its them. Was looking around their team recently and saw just two of their players including the goalie were 25 or under. So there's good experience, but maybe some dodgey knees too.

Shannonside got off to a shocking start last season, lost the first two and then drew the following two, 4pts after 4 games. Took a while to get going but eventually found some form. Different story so far this season, played 5 and won 5, so going well at the moment. As Omarbarksdale points out, a very experienced side, with several players over 30, and you'd be right about the dodgy knees, you can include backs into that also. Will be a very tough season ahead, but you have to use the old cliche... one game at a time. A lot will depend on how other teams fare agains one another, and when the GAA season starts up again. St. Senans will be back training shortly so that could have an impact.
Good win for Abbeyfeale, thought Askeaton might have a bit too much up front, both fairly quick. Fair dues to Abbey they play good football and thats a good win, they're on a decent run also.

thats shocking for a premier division team at this stage of the season. surely they could have called up a few "B" players.

There are a number of front men who could be picked... Michael Behan at Shannonside, the two lads from Rovers, O' Connor from Killeaney. You could go through almost every team in the premier division and pick at least one if not two strikers.
Who will make up the majority of the squad will it be Newcastle West, Rathkeale or will there be a few new faces for the side. I think there should be 2 or three fellas helping out to pick the side, it will be very difficult to get around and see everyone play. Who is in form and who is not.

I couldn't pick out an Abbeyfeale player that should make the Oscar Traynor side. Roche, up front maybe, and Joe Kelliher maybe but I've seen very little of him in the last few seasons. I think John Kelliher is an assett to most sides but maybe lacking pace for that level at this stage. If Maurice Carrig doesn't have any other commitments he's worth a call up I think. I'd also say Askeaton's centre half David Kenrick is very solid and pacey, and very versatile as a squad player. I'm just saying it'll be a tight league this year so I hope whoever's over the team considers enough options.
Leeroybrown
28/09/2010, 5:54 PM
Where do you see Carrig fitting in if hes picked? It will be a close run thing this season as to the eventual winners you're right. There are enough quality players within the league for the Desmond side to be very strong and go far, maybe not as far as to be winners, like a few years back but competitive none the less. However this does all depend on who is selected and as mentioned before in numerous posts, if the players are interested. Do you think the management will be able to motivate the players?
