View Full Version : Sporting Fingal Gone Belly Up
Imagine there's more to follow on Fingal as it's not as if they can't field a team.
However the vultures are beginning to circle, looking for a bargain;)

Are Lisburn any good does anyone know?
Martin Moran always has his teams play with a bit of flair.
Martin Russell does his best too. ;)

So The Lep, you still sure your club didn't cheat by signing players and hiring new staff they couldn't afford?

We could be the new Bohs - instead of selling our ground twice, we can sell Bolger twice.

Will you still have him after that though?
And did you sell one of his legs at some point but later deny it?

Three goals behind Portadown (http://www.ifapremiership.com/), whom they meet in the League Cup Final soon, so maybe not that much of an improvement. They've Glen Ferguson up front (who's now 41 and more of an impact sub these days, but still quite dangerous) and obviously Billy in nets. They're great though - if we weren't in pre-season with a new squad, I'd fancy us for sure. They may have that final more on their minds than this, as the game on Monday will be their fifth in 13 days, all of which will help address the pre-season imbalance. I'd say it'll be 50/50 to be honest.
However the vultures are beginning to circle, looking for a bargain;)
I'd be disgusted if Pete mahon didn't at least contact some fo the top quality players they have. They won't have too many options

Awful for the players with only a couple of weeks to the start of the season to find a new club (on considerably less money most likely too).

I assume the three-club rule is void in this case?

Whatever about the merits of Fingal in the league

Hard to have sympathy for them. They took a high pay high risk gamble and got burned.
This will be good for the long term future of the league. No clubs now seem to be paying way above their means

Can't agree with that. If someone is offering to pay you, say, E300 a week, you can't go assuming it'll dry up with two or three weeks. The employees have been appallingly treated, I think.

Agreed, only Buckley to blaim for this mess, he shoulda taken a leave from Wexford's book and went for a young all amateur team untill the new ground opened. Buckley blew a fortune chasing trophies when there was no need for it.
Are they going to drop leagues or gone all together?
The FAI should never again let another new team from Dublin into the league!

I've turned down jobs before on better pay due to rumours about instability in a company. A bird in the hand and all that

Agree with Louth4sam here! It is an awful experience for those involved, but similar is happening to 100s all over the country every day. I too would take a smaller wage for job security. If an average wage is say €500pw and somone came offering double i'd be asking a few questions.

I'm not saying we should have extra sympathy because they're footballers, by the way. I just disagree that it's hard to have sympathy for them, or indeed anyone who's been laid off. Have they eight or nine under contract from last season? Those who've signed in pre-season are in the minority I think.

Would think Monaghan would take it. They are rightfully next in line if you ask me and are in a better position on and off the pitch to take the place than Drogheda. If Bohs go down then for the same reasons as Mons i think Waterford should go up.
I feel bad for the likes of the Lep to be honest. He genuinely supported Fingal and from what i could tell enjoyed going to LOI games. While the fan bases of clubs like Fingal, Kildare, Dublin City and Kilkenny might have been small, they where still LOI fans lost to the League.

From todays DrogheDA INDEPENDENT
BOBBY Browne is continuing to prepare for life in the Airtricity League First Division, despite growing rumours that Sporting Fingal may not be a in a position to compete in the Premier.
The North Dublin outfit failed to pay players wages on time last week as a proposed sponsorship deal fell through at the eleventh hour and, while the wages were eventually paid over the weekend, the news casts a major doubt over their ability to secure a Premier Division license from the FAI.
Drogheda Utd were told a number of months ago that they would be ‘first in line’ to replace any potential ‘fallers’ from the current batch of top tier teams, but Browne is not convinced the club would even be in a position to take up such an offer.
‘All I can do is prepare for the First Division because that is where we are at the minute,’ he said, without ruling out the possibilty. ‘The same scenario happened last year when Bray took Derry’s place and stayed up - albeit after a play-off.
‘They would have started off budgeting for the First Division and that was all turned on its head at the last minute, but it worked out for them.
‘There’s two sides to it really. You get extra revenue from sponsorship and you will get bigger gates, but I honestly don’t know if the club is set up for it [the Premier Division].
‘ We’ve been told by the Airtiricty League to gear for the First Division and that’s what we are doing - that is all we can do.’
Regardless of where the Drogs end up, putting a competitive squad together is still proving a major challenge for Browne.
‘We have had players up training and when they hear there is no money they maybe get an offer from somewhere else and they are gone.

Nice for Billy Brennan to face his old team. He's playing a stormer for them so far. Hope he gets a club back in the LOI in the summer. It's a shame for the players and staff at Sporting Fingal, I'd like to think the club will play on at some lower level, though it looks like politics had a large role to play behind the scenes (cost cutting and backside covering in the council).

I'm gutted for the players and I hope they can nail down something, I've heard some managers have been holding fire on signing players in anticipation of Fingal players coming onto the market on cheaper wages
Any club that signs contracts with players while hopelessly bust deserves to die. Good riddance, they were nothing but a bureaucratic and corporate play thing that offered nothing to the league. They could have been a success if they adopted the Wexford Youths model but instead of doing anything positive for local football that 2 million was ****ed into players bank accounts. Typical Fingal County Council.

Really gutted this has happened. Hopefully ours will be the only club this will happen to this season and for a long time to come.
Maybe we can come back in at some lower level and build slowly from there. I hope we try this and maybe I will still have a club to support no matter what the level.

3k compo. I imagine he's a free agent now; if we got stung, that's our tough. Despite my earlier post, I don't see how we can actually sell him twice.
(Though I fear for the safety of the Fingal person who gave us the cheques if it bounced. :p)
