Rage have championed the cause of the Zapatistas in Mexico, protested, against war and censorship, campaigned for Mumia Abu Jamal and Leonard Peltier but now they face their greatest challenge yet.....keeping Simon Cowell and the X-Factor away from the christmas number one spot.

Really hope this happens too. Would be a great christmas number 1. Fu*k you i wont do what ya tell me, it really sums up christmas in my home;). Now if only RATM would get back together and produce some new material :(
Got sent this a few times on facebook, can't see it happening as it means hundreds of thousands copies of "Killing in the Name" single will have to be bought in less then 2 weeks and as most RATM fans will have the song either in single or on the album it seems a bit of a non-runner to me

I can't believe RATM eventually sold out and are trying to get a Christmas Number 1 via an internet campaign.
I'd quite happily download it a few times.Especially if they do pick Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing' as the X factor Song.

It wasn't their idea. Don't know who thought of the campaign but RATM have nothing to do with it. As far as I know..

Have Killing in the name of on cd but will gladly buy the single to keep X-Factor off the number 1 spot.
Will also be good to have a decent tune on the radio rather than X-Factor.
By the way - Joe to win, oh my God he's like soooo class. Now where's the Smilies that's head blows up? ->

For the record, I wasn't being serious. :D
i'd like to see a foot.ie version of this....
the most infracted poster sings RATM's "Killing in the Name" and DaHamsta sings Sinatra's "My Way".
Id buy both.

Not quite. Needn't sell a single traditional hard copy CD single in the shops if enough people buy it online.
As others have pointed out RATM have pretty much nothing to do with this initiative so there aren't a significant amount of copies of the hard copy single in circulation (try "nineties/rock/alternative" in your local 2nd hand shop). I'm not a RATM fan per se but I'm sticking a euro in all my xmas cards to to my UK based cousins and asking them to get in on the act. Better have the strains of RATM deep throatin me all christmas long than some x factor gimp.

Actually they didnt, they would never talk to me like that. I would whoop their butts if they did!
I see Simon Cowell has come out saying that this campaign is "cynical"! Pot calling kettle black me thinks!! He says we are punishing those who are in x factor and calling the people who watch it stupid. Well Doh Mr Cowell!

The whole thing plays into Simon's hands though: RATM are on Epic, which is a subsidiary of Sony BMG, who Simon Cowell is one of the top men.
Big bonus all round for him then, win or, errrrr, win....
And it's a ****e song. In my opinion you're becoming just as mindless by signing up to this group and buying the single as the people that invest time and effort into turning someone into a star. You don't give a crap about the top 40 for 51 weeks a year, why bother for the Christmas number 1? Spend some money on local music over Christamsa, they'll need it far more than either Simon Cowell the TV personality or Simon Cowell the record impresario.

I am sure the more people who buy RATM the more people will buy X Factor and Simon Cowell is onto a win win. Its a case of competition of lifting all boats.
I've always hated that Rage Against The Machine track, such whiny, petulant nonsense, so I'm hoping Geordie Joe wins this battle
Obviously I won't be involved because who over 12 bothers buying singles any more?

It's every sale, digital or otherwise, from 00.01 on Monday.
Don't the charts for Christmas week start tomorrow though?
I think it's this week, as it's the last full week of sales.
RATM ahead on sales as of 6pm today
Won't last, the whole reason of midweek sales figures is to allow the record companies know how much they have to manipulate it to get the final chart they want.

The campaign has been condemned by the show’s chief judge Simon Cowell and McElderry’s X-Factor mentor Cheryl Cole as unfair and speaking on the BBC this morning McElderry said he would be “disappointed” if he failed to top the charts..
“I’m not really seeing it as a personal attack, because I think if any other person would have won it would have been the same case. And it’s more against The X Factor than the actual winner.
“I would be disappointed if it’s not number one — but it’s out of my hands and there’s nothing I can do about it and I just hope people get behind us and support us and buy the single.”
Cole said she would be “gutted” if McElderry lost out to a “mean” internet campaign. “He put his heart and soul into every single week of The X Factor and I cannot bear to see him lose out to a mean campaign that has nothing to do with his efforts. If that song, or should I say campaign, by an American group is our Christmas number one I’ll be gutted for him and our charts.”
Cowell said “Joe doesn’t deserve to be stuck in the middle of this. A campaign aimed at harming his chart position is unnecessary.”
Fellow judge Louis Walsh was equally dismissive of the campaign. "This is taking the fun out of the race for Christmas number one," he said.
Paul McCartney disagreed. "I like the idea of this Rage Against The Machine thing that's happening," he told Sky News. "I think that's kind of interesting."
He said he would be pleased to see the band make it to Number 1 "because it's out of leftfield you know. Everyone expects Joe to do it, and he certainly will sell a lot of records. And if he gets to Number One, good luck to him. But it would be kind of funny if a band like Rage Against The Machine got it, because it would prove a point."
http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2009/1218/breaking36.htm
I was apathetic to the campaign until reading the comments by Cheryl Cole, Walsh and Cowell, they really think they have a god given right to dictate the charts and that no other act is entitled to have an x-mas no.1 but their act
Good one you egotistical morons I'm going to download RATM now! :)

I hope the irish times are joking with this line "a little-known American punk-metal band have beaten the winner of the X Factor to the UK Christmas number one slot"
Since when are RATM a little known punk-metal band? They sell out massive arenas all over the world you clowns. A lot more than anyone out of x factor has ever done (including the most successful x factor contestant Leona Lewis, who i believe is still yet to even do a tour)

Apparently her inability to sing for more than 30 minutes is going to kill her career. They're crapping themselves ahead of the tour that they've booked.
We should just do Charlie Brooker's idea next year
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/dec/21/charlie-brooker-rage-against-the-machine
The temptation might be to pour a lot of time and effort into creating a catchy anti-X Factor anthem, but the smartest counter-move would be to release something short, cheap and throwaway that isn't even a proper song at all. I propose a track called Simon Cowell: **** for Ears, which consists of a couple of eight-year-olds droning the phrase "Simon Cowell, **** for ears" four times in a row in the most deliberately tuneless manner possible. It should last only about 15 seconds or so. Quick enough to register; brief enough not to outstay its welcome.
I propose something by Captain Beefheart. Could be considered homage to John Peel and a way to freak out mainstream radio listeners.

Saw them described as "nu-metal" elsewhere. I thought nu-metal bands had to look like they were on their way to a halloween fancy dress competition in the guise of tw@s.

O love the xmas songs, and xmas spirit, and i think this ******oly campaign could just ruin xmas no.1s for a while now. Example: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=102412817788 we joked about it in previous posts i reckon fans of all bands next year are going to be running this sh!te, dont like your man joe from x factor but surely his song is more worthy of a xmas no.1 spot like.
Could you not say though that the x factor song is also a part of a campaign that starts back in August that in the end builds up to the Christmas no1. The X Factor winner doesn't deserve it anymore than anyone else. Being no.1 in the singles charts doesn't really matter these days. Its just nice to see this guaranteed no.1 for x factor every year stopped. The Rage song just makes it funnier. Good to hear RATM are donating some of the proceeds of the downloads to charity.

Ruin Christmas number one? Sniffing solvents/adhesives can kill instantly you know. Have a read of this list from the last two decades, comprised as it is, of abject atrocities only rarely punctuated by the odd rise in standard.
1990 Cliff Richard "Saviour's Day"
1991 Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody" / "These Are the Days of Our Lives"
1992 Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You"
1993 Mr Blobby "Mr Blobby"
1994 East 17 "Stay Another Day"
1995 Michael Jackson "Earth Song"
1996 Spice Girls "2 Become 1"
1997 Spice Girls "Too Much"
1998 Spice Girls "Goodbye"
1999 Westlife "I Have A Dream" / "Seasons in the Sun"
2000 Bob The Builder "Can We Fix It?"
2001 Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman "Somethin' Stupid"
2002 Girls Aloud "Sound of the Underground"
2003 Michael Andrews & Gary Jules "Mad World"
2004 Band Aid 20 "Do They Know It's Christmas?"
2005 Shayne Ward "That's My Goal"
2006 Leona Lewis "A Moment Like This"
2007 Leon Jackson "When You Believe"
2008 Alexandra Burke "Hallelujah"
Check out a more expansive list here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christmas_number_one_singles_(UK)) . Little Jimmy Osmond aside there's scarcely a dud in there from the early sixties up to the early 80's.
