Jimmy McGarry
Has to be one of the greatest tbh.
Our right honorable Lord Mayor of Sligo Town and owner of Mooneys.
In court next month for assaulting a Gaurd when the DS and Special Branch were raiding his pub and he still got relected.
What a hero.

Jimmy also played one competitive game for Rovers in the first division during Pugh's all local side.

Mick Graham deserves a mention.

Eddie Annand for celebrating in front of the Shed.

Ollie Keogh working with him now since Nigel Keady departed for the FAI.

A few Cult Heros for Da Town

1. Rod De Khors - Legend ... no explination required
2. Barry Murphy and Frank Darby - The dymanic duo! Barry was hard as nails and Frank could distract strikers with his eardrum piercing shreek!
3. Jamsie Coll ... we said we needed a manager and a centre half, he said I'll do both!
4. Stevie Gavin - Got taken off injured away to Mons so he came up to the stand and played the drum for us
5. Andy Myler - Goalscoring legend
6. Danny O'Leary - Broken fingers still couldnt stop him playing
7. Johnny Morris-Burke - Purly for his Mario Kempes stype perm at the time
8. Adrian Carberry - Legend always giving 100%. Got clocked one game, blood everywhere, physio ran on with the magic sponge. Cabsy took it, cleaned the blood off his new white boots, got up and played on
9. "Honorable" mention for Istavn "Stephen" Lakatos and Zolt "Joe" Pedro ... came over to Ireland without a word of English but quickly learned 3 important words ... Want ... More ... Money

ah frank darby how can we not forget him when he played for us under Mickey O'Connor?
the only player that roared squeaking!

I'm not sure some of them qualify as cult heroes. I mean Prunty, Digger and Mumbles were all excellent players (at their level in the case of O'Connor) in their own right.

McNally was injured a year or two after he'd gone to Bohs, and I wouldn't have Lavine near any heroes list...

I'd have the rest on the cult heroes list though. How about the Bald Truck Driving Man?

If your saying the players I mentioned are NOT cult heroes how in the name of god can you say the Bald Truck Driving Man IS a cult hero???!!!!!!

Thats puzzling!!!!

And yes I know Macca got injured while playing with Bohs. I never referred to Macca been injured!!!! I was referring to Gucci but sher some of our so called supporters wouldn't remember him as his best years were in Kenny's first 2 seasons!!!

Beat me to it Marty, Frank Darby what a voice, I once watched a game in St Mels between Athlone and Galway. Darby on one side John Mannion on the other. Jesus! my eardrums were nearly bleeding leaving the ground!

Because they're just heroes! Cult heroes are, in my mind anyway, players that wouldn't necessarily be the best players, but give their all for the cause or are celebrated by the fans for other (sometimes nonsensical) reasons.... Beat the beep colly, beat the beep... Vinny wouldn't have been the most skillful player, but always gave 100%, took no crap and could relied upon to get stuck in - hence a cult hero.

Barry Burke was the great cult hero at DC. Fabulous player who could have gone all the way if he'd had the right managers.

Total legend here too. One of the "Dermos" with David "Leeza is the Geeza" Lee. Pity he got sent off every 2nd game. Burkey and Leeza were the last players to score in St Mels.

Barry Clancy made an unforgivable mistake that cost us the game against Bray in the FAI Cup replay one year so he ain't a cult hero more of a cult villian, plus he ran off crying to Monaghan

He aint crying now and nor are we! One of our best players in the past 2 seasons. Slowly making it to legend status here.

Other legends for me at Mons were of course the Right-Honourable-soon-to-be-sainted Billy Bagster.

Also Seamie Finnegan who is now giving back to the club by the bucket load by being our Women's team manager and assistant manager of the U20's.

Keith Foy has to get a mention as does Alvin Rouse, Robbie Horgan and Graham Doyle. They are among the best loved and still talked about players from recent days to pull on the Mons shirt.

Andy "The Beast" Haran and Darren Meenan were 2 of the most talented players we have had here in recent times but they are fast being eclipsed by our homegrown hero Aaron McCarey in this category.

Lastly on a personal note: John Lester. Hubba Hubba to infinity!

I am going to check this out for you I have a feeling that Seamie Finnegan played for us in the early nineties the name rings a bell!

With more then half of your current team "cult heroes", relegation couldn't possibly happen, could it?

Wasn't there something similar on the RTÉ website a while back? Could have been just club legends though.

Longfordian

Another one I remember from years ago - though this time for being fairly
sh!te..... :D

He was a part of allegedly the most notorious booze-loving team we ever had under Zac as player/manager. Heysham was/is a Muslim and used to get hammered along with the rest of the lads on the bus on the way home from matches. Then he'd apparently break down crying at the shame he felt for going against his religious beliefs!. He'd get over it by having a few more cans. Definite cult hero.

can't remember if he's been mentioned before or not, but Gavin Dykes-mainly for his ability to hoof nearly every second ball over the stands...think everyone in Treacy Ave/Maugheraboy would have least one ball from a match he played in over the years.... :)

There's been loads for us...

Some I recall directly:
'Snackbox' Keane
Big Trond Debes from Norway
There's only one Tony Hall (he was 10 foot tall you know!)
Jose Quintongo, twice
Kevin (Junior) O'Brien
Iorfa for Ireland
Rennie without doubt, very few fans on the fence regarding him!
Pat "He used to be sh*te, but now he's alright" Flynn
and now (as well as then) Mick Devine definitely

Have to add "The Ginger Scot" Ger Mcloughlin.. What a legend! Up there with my favourites
Suppose a special mention for Vinny Sullivan aswel. Possibly the most frustrating player ever yet we still love him :D

outspoken

Longford
Sean Prunty - great servant to the Town
Dave Mooney - Goal scoring machine
Dillo and Garto - great partnership
kirbs - Cup hero
Dessie Baker - always gave his all.

and had the likes of deegan stayed longer I think he could have been on that list , last season victor was a bit of a crowd favorite too :)
