Good news and bad news before the new season starts

Bad news first, owing to increases in licensing costs for the host the site was with, I won't be able to update the existing site for much longer. I was told that the account was going to be closed on the 3rd August, but it's still running at the moment and I was able to update it this morning with the season's fixtures to date. However I don't know how long more I will be able to
You can view the fixtures to date here - http://www.chatsoccer.net/irishabroad/dateDetails.xquery

On to the good news. Well, better news anyway.
Google have recently made server space available to host web applications for free using the Google App Engine here: http://code.google.com/appengine/
The downside of this is that all of the code I have written for the existing site (XML documents with XQuery scripts if you're interested) will have to be rewritten in Java and JSP. Not only this, but 3 seasons worth of data has to be uploaded to the server, and because of timeout settings imposed by Google, this has to be done manually, one game day at a time, instead of all at once.
I've started working on the code side of things first, and you can see some of the embryonic results so far here:
Date details: http://tetsujin1979.appspot.com/GameDayDetails
Club details: http://tetsujin1979.appspot.com/ClubDetails
Player details: http://tetsujin1979.appspot.com/PlayerDetails

Since this all has to be written from scratch, I've been able to add in some new stuff that I've meant to get around to for a while now, but due to restrictions on the XQuery implementation I was using, and just sheer laziness, I never did.

Hopefully I'll have it looking good as new, or at least not as crap as the old site, by the end of the month

I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank soccerc for all the help he's given me over the last 2 seasons in getting the site up and running. There's no way I'd have been able to do it without him.

Championship starts tonight.

Quinn at Sheff United, Yeates at Boro. Anyone else likely to start the opening game?

Where is John-Joe O'Toole starting the season?

If I knew anything about
(XML documents with XQuery scripts if you're interested) will have to be rewritten in Java and JSP, I'd offer to help you tets but unfortunately I don't.

Hopefully you can keep it running. Maybe ask the FAI for a bit of funding?

Despite the industry of Yeates, who was comfortably his side's best player, Boro were unable to make anything out of their late possession as the game wound down towards a tame finish.

So Long is joint favourite to win the Championship scoring title on Bet365 and didn't even start.

Good times.

Could be a disciplinary thing from Rodgers to keep him on his toes... Long did throw a couple of strops under Coppell.

Word on the Dundee Utd forum is that Joe Collins impressed on trial and is due to sign a deal this week.

Niall McArdle is on trial at Hartlepool, Shane O' Connor made his Ipswich debut last night and Conor McCormack has been given the Number 15 jersey at Triestina this season.

Any idea where Michael Collins (formerly of Liverpool and Triestina) ended up?

I'd be wary of taking anything that page says at face value. When you decide to leave out the likes of Ronnie Whelan Liverpool's captain from the 1989-1990 squad to prove a point then the question has to be asked how much of the other data is similarly bogus.

Put quite simply, they didn't exist, or if they did they were plying their trade at Croke Park, Semple Stadium and Parc Ui Chaiomh.

Although our international first 11 at the time was picked almost entirely from the top 1st Division clubs and Celtic, few of them were Irish born. It was only as a result of the Charlton era that more people in Ireland took up the sport and as a result our team now contains far more first generation Irish players than it did back then.

Unfortunately thanks to the continental based signing policies of Wenger, Benitez, Mourinho etc. our best players no longer play for the top clubs.

Ireland's miss is horrendous, but he seemed to be involved in every through ball in the middle of the park.
some save from Shay Given from Jones as well, and includes Keogh's shot off the bar

Andy Reid just scored a nice chip against Norwich in the Carling Cup

Make it two for Reid, the second was just a tap in

Colchester beat Norwich at home 7-1 on the opening day and it looks like Sunderland might equal or better that

Wes Hoolahan got a tap in as well for Norwich

Also, I read this on West Ham's site

Zola, who confirmed that Dean Ashton was "still doing his rehabilitation" on his long-term ankle problem, said Kieron Dyer had sat out with "tightness in his muscle" and should be OK for Blackburn Rovers away on Saturday. Valon Behrami and Terry Dixon are also set to train fully later this week meaning the only other absentees are Herita Ilunga (jaw) and the long-term Luis Boa Morte (knee), while Savio has been unwell this week. Regardless of the squad situation, the manager felt his side more than held their own against expensively-assembled opponents who have also seen off Liverpool and Hull City this season. "That was the most encouraging thing and that's what I told the players. We matched them in everything they did.

QPR have just punished them, with Hogan Ephraim firing the Championship side in front from the edge of the area.
