just watched MNS and yet another terrible show. But what is clear is that RTE do not want it or dont value it. Before, during, adds and after promos for the GAA and sunday game and centenary 125. They even told us in MNS that panelist Dave Barry had won two all irelands with cork FFS.
Comment of the night came from that chap Foley about Pats going to Bucharest in an empty stadium. They wont be used to it he said, as the highlights fade from pats game with monaghan in Century Homes Park attn 120 a rat and 4 ball boys, quickly followed by Fingal Vs Athlone in front of ......lots

Is Irish Professional Soccer Viable? (http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/mns/2009/0816/tw_soccer_av.html)
I don't want a debate on this subject in this thread, that'd be severely off-topic, but moreso:
Does RTE have a right to put together these 'exclusives'?
Do they have any class of a mandate for reports like this with the laughable coverage of the league?
When during the three months where Irish soccer fans are denied Premier League football, they feature not a single LOI match, but at the start of the LOI season (just as most soccer fans are interested in the English Title Race) and the end of the LOI season (when we're back into the English domestic season) they decide to throw up three or four games?
When they referred to Monaghan United as Monaghan Town?
When they'd rather show Atletico Madrid vs Panathanaikos than Saint Patrick's Athletic vs Steaua Bucharest?
If you're gonna ignore the league, please do it fcuking right, and don't commission reports about the state of it when you won't show its representatives in major European ties.

That is an excellent point. Man, need to email RTE with that straight away (sportonline@rte.ie). Include the complaints dept. in it (complaints@rte.ie) and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (info@bci.ie)
They cant have it both ways as you rightly point out.
If anyone else felt like giving them some what for then get writing.

I emailed RTE complaints dept. and RTE Sports a few weeks ago about the disgraceful coverage of St. Pats in the round against Sovetov. I made a general point about the obvious bias toward GAA. I also made the point that RTE needed to generate interest in LOI on TV in order to stimulate advertiser interest and this would pay financial dividends for the league and RTE over time.
Stephen Alkin (Exec producer RTE Sports) got back to me today. See Below!
Many thanks for your email.
Clearly RTE is not biased against domestic football. Our commitment to Irish soccer over the next few years is considerable. It includes 13 live games in the League of Ireland and the FAI cup this year; 18 in 2010; 23 in 2011; 28 in 2012;and 33 in 2013. In addition there will be 36 Monday Night Soccer programmes every year until 2013, with every game covered in the domestic league and cup.
In these times RTE is not immune from the downturn of the economy. We have lost €68m in advertising revenue in the past year. We have covered many of the Irish sides in Europe in recent years: Cork City, Drogheda Utd, Bohemians and St Pats. More indeed than any other station in Ireland.
However, in 2009 we have no spare funds. We have had to cut back on a lot of our output and soccer is not immune from that.
Kind regards,
Stephen Alkin

Could the funds required for each of Bohemians/Derry/St. Pat's European fixtures, as well as a LOI game almost biweekly (one Friday, once Saturday) be raised if the World Cup Dress-Rehearsal (AKA The Confederations Cup) and the shoddy celebrity boxing (Lords of the Rings) weren't commissioned for RTE?

Yes because their games draw in audiences. It's not (for the most part anyway) RTE's fault that loi football doesn't appeal to the masses in this country.

Which would be all very well, were RTE a solely commercial broadcaster.
But they're not. They have a public service requirement, which they receive license funding for. This to ensure they can cover the full breadth of Irish life - including sport in Ireland - without having to be a god-awful American sit-com mess like TV3.
So in-effect they're getting paid twice to show Irish football, as they should be covering it to some degree anyway under their public service remit/funding.

being saying this all along. the increse in GAA programmes in the last two years is nothing short of propaganda. Started with Underdogs, in irish of course to remind us of our gealic identity. Celeb Bannistoir to say any fool can get involved with the GAA, road to croker for the auld ones but that local hero thing took the ****, if they could have a muck savage roaring at me in a darkened room with a Nazi sign on his arm then this programme was it. but its not just our sport,
our athletes are at the world championships at the moment and doing quite well. They are more amateur then the GAA "expences" lads, being on minimum wage. RTE didnt cover the championships instead wasting all budgets on GAA programming some of which are mentioned above.

Our commitment to Irish soccer over the next few years is considerable. It includes 13 live games in the League of Ireland and the FAI cup this year;
Wow - a WHOLE 13 live games - quick, break open the bunting and alert the press!
18 in 2010; 23 in 2011; 28 in 2012;and 33 in 2013.
So we'll have to wait a whole 4 years to get to a level of coverage which other broadcasters give their National League
In addition there will be 36 Monday Night Soccer programmes every year until 2013, with every game covered in the domestic league and cup.
Except for the First Division of course

The FAI agreed that RTE could reduce their "offer" by 3 million in return for MNS.
It met with stern resistance from RTE but they agreed.
It is still the equivalent of 3 million euro in cash that the FAI have to forego to allow a highlights programme on RTE.
Now I enjoy MNS and it is normally the only programme I watch on RTE these days. I can live with the lack of first division coverage but it is a bit much RTE claiming they are committed to domestic football when they would clearly rather not show it.
No doubt the English FA have to pay RTE to show the premiership on saturday nights too.:rolleyes:
