Surreal seeing O'Shea come on and shaking Rooney's hand at the end, it was only a couple of weeks ago he was having a very average game in Tallaght stadium. Getting shoved off the ball by Evra and putting in a poor cross was about all he managed to do but fair play, he was never expected to see the first team that soon.

Gets a couple of mentions in the minute-by-minute on the Guardian:

"O'Shea is on Birmingham. I have no idea who went off. Apologies. [..] O'Connor finds O'Shea wide on the right and he gets plenty of room from which to cross. On his Premier League debut, he aims his cross straight into the arms of the keeper."

Nice to see him get a game but the only thing to remember about that debut was the location, looked starstruck which is quite strange to see, Got absolutely bounced by evra and looked afraid to take him on next time he got the ball out wide but good luck to him

I saw his last game in Bray for United when he scored in the 90th minute to win us the game , now his next was in front of 75,000 at old trafford . What can I say to top that so happy for Jay 'O :):):)

I think he needs to bulk up a good bit. Obviously his training is going to take a step up and he'll be playing around better players at a higher tempo which will help him improve physically as well as technically.
His first few games for Galway United he was terrible I thought. He was scared to take anyone on and to be honest I didn't think he had any great talent. Once he got a bit of confidence and settled in he was one of the best players in the league. Hope he settles in at Birmingham and gets into the first 11 after a while.

He's started the Carling cup game tonight against Southampton.
Hopefully he will impress.

I wouldn't read too much into that.

did anyone see his performance?

given its carling cup and they have injuries, to be taken off at half time i certainly would read into it.

SkStu

that would be my first impression too Paul. Unless its an injury, to be taken off at half time against Southampton is not a good sign...

Umberside

I don't know so. If no-one saw him playing then it's impossible to know why he came off.

to assume is to make an ass out of u and me umberside, but in this case it may be safe to do so, yes so, maybe we are both wrong though...so who knows, so.

When he moved there I didnt even expect him to get on the bench for the first team this season so he has done much better than I expected to get some game time. A season in the reserves would not be the worst thing in the world for him, its a massive step up from Galway United to Birmingham so I dont think its unreasonable to give him a bit of time to adjust.

Having said that Im not convinced that he is good enough for the Premiership but we will see in time

He's good enough for the premiership in my opinion if he wants to be. It will all depend on how he devolps and gets on over for the rest of the season. He would more than likely be in the reserves but it would'nt be a bad idea for him to be loaned out to the championship or league 1.

Nice to see Jay O'Shea scoring both goals as Chesterfield gained promotion yesterday to League One.
Sligo Rovers connection too with Paul Cook and Gerry Carr in the management team.

Two goals today as Chesterfield come from two down to lead 3-2 at Yeovil. O'Shea got their second and third, second meant to be a cracker.

Hard introduction to English football with a debut to forget against Patrice Evra and Man Utd and a failed loan spell in the Championship with Middlesbrough, but he's really settled in the lower divisions. It'd be interesting to see if he makes the most of his second chance in the Championship if Chesterfield go up.

Strachan really threw him under the bus with some of the comments he made about him.

What did Strachan say about him?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/legacy/chrischarles/2010/04/quotes_of_the_week_20.html

"Well, he's breathing, and got a pulse."

Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan when asked on BBC Tees about the qualities new loan signing Jay O'Shea would bring to the side, lamenting Boro's lack of midfielders.

https://untypicalboro.wordpress.com/2013/10/15/loan_stars_v_be/comment-page-1/

JAMES O’SHEA: Irish international ‘run quickly down blind alley then stumble’ merchant O’Shea was one of the conveyor belt of loanees that passed through while Strachan was treading water in his first season. He was so anonymous he changed his name from Jay after his first game and no-one noticed for weeks. Two games.

Pretty sure he said that the day he signed, ie he's got a pulse so we can use him.

The first quote is a compliment (or a positive comparison to the mids that Strachan was replacing him with) and the second excerpt is not a quote of Strachan's. A quick glance at the article doesn't seem to contain any quotes from Strachan either..

Yes it seems more a dig at the rest of the squad! Or basically just saying they need to improve the squad?

tetsujin1979

sounds like on of the usual soundbites or one liners to come from Strachan alright. Don't think it was particularly offensive. Going by the date on that link, it was the same week as his first (of two!) appearances for Boro, so it could have been made in a press conference before the game itself.

Ack, Stu, you're letting rational critical thinking get in the way of having a cheap go at Strachan!
