View Full Version : Your best 5 and worse 5 grounds in country

That's because no one's ever been there.
Because they can't ever find it :D

Accessibility
best: To be honest probably Ferrycarrig because I think that it's the only ground in the LOI that has both sign posts to it and car parking in the ground. For ppl getting public transport Ferrycarrig is probably the worst so I'll give Tallaght I mention here too I guess.
worst: UCD (can never find the pitch)
Bar
best: Ferrycarrig, I guess the bar is neat and you can watch the match from the windows.
worst: The multitudes of grounds where the bar cant be found or doesnt exist.
Nothing against Wexford, but are you kidding? Great there's a signpost, but access is down a death trap of a little country road. And a bar at a football ground that doesn't serve beer?

I got a beer there after the game a couple of weeks ago. They only had bottles but it was grand.

I think it was either Heineken or that Italian beer you got. Nothing else.

Hence me getting the Italian beer! There was beer there though which was the point.

From what I have seen . . . . .
Best 5:
Turners Cross (by a country mile)
Terryland (biased, yes, I know)
Dalymount (home offootball)
Flancare (first ground in country with seating on 4 sides, well done)
Lissywoolen - (if you build it, they - Premier Division sides, and Premier Division football- will come!!)
Worst 5:
United Park - a hole of a place
Jackman Park - kip
Finn Park - I accept funds are being put into new ground
Brandywell - too far from pitch
Showgrounds - how can anyone play fooball on that surface??
ps - (dis)honourable mention to Cobh for Worst 5. Ground reminds me of orders on a submarine - dive, dive, dive
That cos we beat ye 4-1 when ye played us there?:p

Get the DART to Booterstown and walk 15 minutes. Nearer a train station than most other LoI grounds. Not to mention, of course, the ten or so bus services which either run into or outside campus.
Eh? You're doing well if you can find it from the other side of the campus, looking through 20 faculty buildings. When you find it, you enter it. Same as any other ground. Finding it can be tricky if you don't know where you're going (self-explanatory really), and in fairness now there's a load of building work going on around the place and new temporary pedestrian routes going up all the time (saw two of our players get lost a couple of weeks ago), but your post is, as usual, uninformed rubbish.
The fact that two of your players couldn't find it speaks volumes.
The idea of getting the DART to Booterstown to reach Belfield, is the equivalent of getting the train to Heuston in order to reach Richmond. It's not feasible nor practical. The bus at Blackrock station used to bring you to the old ground. It brings you nowhere near the new one. At least Pats ground has a Luas link.
worst: The multitudes of grounds where the bar cant be found or doesnt exist.
Kildare's players appear to have spent a lot of time in the bar this season. They are playing like a pub team.

It was because a new (very long) wall had been put up around construction meaning you have to go a different way. It's temporary; I mentioned it as a bit of a laugh.

The 11 (I think) brings you nearer the Bowl than the 17 brings you to the Park.
You said it's one of the few grounds with no rail link. The Bowl is closer to a rail station than, for example, the Brandywell, Terryland, Turner's Cross, Flancare, Lissywoolen, Dalymount, Finn Park and Ferrycarrig to name a few. As usual you're talking gibberish.

Well its much closer to a train station than us as our nearest would probably be Dundalk!

Yep, can add youz and, indeed, Drogheda in as being further away from a train line than Belfield.

I think Bray, Kildare County, Sligo, Limerick and Dundalk can be the only grounds that are practically linked to a mainline rail line. Tallaght Stadium is accessible by LUAS as well as Pats ground in Inchicore
If our beloved Todd Andrews hadn't swung his axe like a mad man in the early 1960s, the RSC would have been connected too as the Waterford - Tramore line ran nearby, in fact 5 minute walk from the ground.

If they ever open the bar at Station Road (was always closed whenever the Dubs or Dundalk came down)

Has got a bit better this year but for years any chance for them to make a bit of money they closed, I'm not sure if Kildare get anything from it anyway so I'm not too bothered

Kildare have a club shop as well although its alfresco!!!!!!:D
We mightnt have the best stadium but we have one of the best pressrooms and corporate areas in the league.

You have one of the worst press areas. A pokey little room with a desk that sits about three people, and forces you away from the reflective glass, making it even harder to see what's going on on the pitch.
How anyone could blame Kildare for facilities is beyond me. Complain to this lot...http://www.newbridgetownfc.com/

Not complaining, just challenging the claim that Kildare have one of the best press boxes in the League.
And if I was complaining, of course Kildare are the people to complain to. They choose to play there.
Didn't say you were mate, but this is the club who own the ground (afaik) so only they can improve the press area.

Station Road is a very nice ground for Newbridge Town though, just a LSL team. So dont see why they would want to upgrade it unless it was at the request of Kildare County.

Much as I hope every LOI ground gets the facelift/upgrade/demolition job it deserves, when/if the money does come in, I will miss certain grounds and the charm of LOI football is often as caught up in the familiar old grounds as it is in the football played on the pitch.
I love going to Richmond Park. I love the fact walking along Emmett Road you wouldn't even know there was a football ground just behind the houses, it's just suddenly there when you turn the corner, snugly nestled surrounded by flats, houses, shops, grassy verges, and just in the shadow of Kilmainham Prison. (I'll qualify that by saying that the Shed End of the ground is the worst place in Ireland to watch a game from.)
I have a soft spot for the old Belfield also as it was one of the first away games I ever went to and because every time I went there it seemed to be sunny. I remember dragging a few English friends from uni and taking them the "scenic" route to the ground which somehow involved passing a large empty barn type building, traipsing through a small copse, and even circumnavigating a small stream. It's possible I took a wrong turn. One of them turned and asked me, standing in a small wooded area, no sign of life, let alone a football match, in the dark, "If I didn't know you better I'd say you had brought us here to murder us." :p
Turner's Cross feels like a proper football stadium. I only managed to visit it for the first time this season but it's very impressive, with a great look and feel. Probably my favorite ground in he league and what every club should aspire to.
Century Homes Park- You can see cows pottering about pretending to be uninterested in the football, get beer and watch the action from the veranda, and eat Mon-dogs, all from a little stand tucked in amongst the rolling hills of Monaghan. Unique. (And Magicme lives there, just under the away dugout :) )
Tallaght Stadium for the reasons outlined here- http://foot.ie/forums/showpost.php?p=1204956&postcount=215

I will have you know that I do not live under the away dugout, but in the press box at the back of the stand.
Actually if you follow the cows over the hill you will end up in my back garden!

The Community Stadium in Tallaght is a building site.
More than a tiny bit rude to ask a League of Ireland side to play there.
